If a JetBrains IDE reports “Cannot collect JVM options,” the message alone does not identify the cause. A JetBrains community support thread linked one reported case to non-ASCII characters in the IDE installation or .vmoptions file path; JetBrains release-note material also lists a separate issue involving a corrupted options file. Check which situation fits before changing files or reinstalling.
What the “Cannot collect JVM options” error means
The message indicates that the IDE could not collect its JVM startup options, but it is not a diagnosis. A JetBrains community support discussion from August 15, 2024 connected a reported case to non-ASCII characters in the path to the .vmoptions file or the IDE installation. A separate JetBrains release-note listing mentions a corrupted .vmoptions file. These are distinct leads, and neither proves the cause on a particular computer.

In the community thread, JetBrains IDEs Support responder Andriy Bazanov wrote, “Could be because of non-ASCII chars in the file path.” Another responder later recommended using paths without non-ASCII characters for the IDE installation and IDE directories. That advice applies to the reported case; it is not a guaranteed fix for every occurrence. Read the JetBrains community discussion.
First, narrow down which kind of problem you may have
Before modifying settings, note the exact error text, IDE product and build, operating system, and whether the installation or options-file path contains non-ASCII characters. This is practical triage, not an official JetBrains diagnostic checklist.
#1 Best Overall
- Non-ASCII characters in an IDE-related path: A path-related issue is plausible, especially if the problem resembles the case discussed by JetBrains Support.
- An older build: A September 3, 2024 community reply said the reported non-ASCII installation-path issue should be fixed in version 2024.2.1. Treat that as a dated, product- and issue-specific report, not a general guarantee. See the linked JetBrains issue, IJPL-156417.
- A corrupted options file, or paths that already look suitable: The non-ASCII explanation may not fit. JetBrains release-note material mentions a corrupted
.vmoptionsfile as a separate issue, but the cited listing does not give a validated repair procedure. Check the IntelliJ IDEA release notes for product-specific information.
If the path contains non-ASCII characters, try an ASCII-only location
For a suspected path-related case, the community guidance is to use paths without non-ASCII characters for the IDE installation and relevant IDE data directories. Check the path to the .vmoptions file as well as the installation path. Moving only a project folder would not address the paths implicated in that report.
If your IDE keeps its configuration, system files, plugins, and logs in separate locations, JetBrains Support documents ways to change those locations. Choose valid directories for your operating system; the paths below are examples, not required locations.

Set custom directory paths in a standalone IDE
- In the IDE, open Help | Edit Custom Properties…. JetBrains recommends creating a custom
idea.propertiesfile this way rather than editing the original file in the installation’sbindirectory. - Set the properties for the locations you need to change:
idea.config.path,idea.system.path,idea.plugins.path, andidea.log.path. - Use suitable paths for your system. JetBrains’ examples include
c:/work/idea/caches/trunk-config,c:/work/idea/caches/trunk-system, andc:/work/idea/caches/trunk-plugins.
For more detail, see JetBrains Support’s guide to IDE directories.

JetBrains documents this route: hover over the IDE in the Toolbox App’s Tools tab, open its gear menu, then select Settings | Configuration | Custom JVM options file location | System, plugins, config and logs directory. Labels may differ in another Toolbox App version, so follow the options shown in your installed version.
If the IDE is on an older build, verify the version claim
The September 2024 community reply said version 2024.2.1 should fix the specific non-ASCII installation-path issue linked to IJPL-156417. Check your IDE’s product and build, then consult that product’s release information before relying on the claim. It does not establish that upgrading fixes a corrupted options file or every error with the same wording.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If the paths do not fit, do not assume this fix applies
If the installation and options-file paths do not contain non-ASCII characters, or the error points to a corrupted .vmoptions file, the path workaround may be irrelevant. The release-note reference confirms a separate corrupted-file issue but does not establish safe repair steps. Use the exact error text and your product and build when consulting current, product-specific JetBrains support material.
Do not start by deleting arbitrary .vmoptions files or reinstalling the IDE: the cited material does not establish either as a safe, generally effective fix.
