There is no single best compact point-and-shoot camera for every buyer: a versatile zoom, a pocketable fixed-lens camera, video features and rugged construction solve different problems. This editorial shortlist matches five models to those priorities; it is not a ranking from a shared lab test.
How to choose a compact camera
Start with what you photograph most. A zoom lets you change framing without moving, while a fixed lens means accepting one angle of view in exchange for a simpler, pocketable stills setup. For video, consider the recording features and workflow you actually need. For travel or outdoor use, decide whether ruggedness matters more than zoom reach or a larger sensor.

- Framing: Choose a zoom if you regularly switch between wide scenes and distant subjects. Check the exact focal range on the manufacturer’s specification page.
- Stills: Decide whether flexibility or a fixed-lens pocket camera better suits your subjects and shooting habits.
- Video: Check the exact regional model’s supported formats, audio connections, stabilization, streaming options and recording limits before buying.
- Portability and handling: Compare body dimensions, controls, screen movement, viewfinder and grip. If possible, handle the camera in person.
- Outdoor use: Verify the manufacturer’s waterproofing and durability ratings, including the conditions and limits attached to them.
- Cost and stock: Check current local prices and availability, and distinguish new from used condition. Stock can vary by region and date.

The RX100 VII is a compact fixed-lens camera for buyers who want broad framing flexibility in a small body. Sony’s UK specifications list dimensions of 101.6 × 58.1 × 42.8 mm; that figure is for the body as specified by Sony, not a comparison of packed size with every other camera here. See Sony’s RX100 VII specifications and confirm local pricing and availability.

Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III: zoom for varied framing
The G7 X Mark III offers a useful zoom range for people who want to reframe without changing lenses. Canon’s U.S. specification page lists a 4.2x optical zoom and a 24–100mm-equivalent focal range. Those are Canon’s published specifications for its U.S. product page; check your regional listing for any differences. See Canon’s G7 X Mark III specifications.
Canon announced a limited-edition 30th-anniversary version of the PowerShot line scheduled for April 2026. The announcement does not establish whether that edition is currently in stock in your market. Read Canon’s 2026 announcement.

Ricoh GR IIIx: a pocketable fixed-lens stills camera
The GR IIIx suits buyers who value a pocketable stills camera and are comfortable working with a fixed lens. Unlike a zoom camera, it cannot change focal length to reframe a subject; you may need to move or accept a different composition. RTINGS includes it as its pocketable pick in its 2026 compact-camera guide, and notes that the GR III and RX100 VII target different users. Consult Ricoh’s official product information for the precise specifications of the GR IIIx in your region. See RTINGS’ compact-camera guide and its RX100 VII and Ricoh GR III comparison.
Canon PowerShot V1: a video-forward alternative
The PowerShot V1 is worth considering if video and newer camera features are central to your choice. TechRadar describes it as a strong Canon compact, with a 1.4-inch sensor and 3.1x zoom. Those details come from an editorial guide rather than a Canon specification page, so verify the exact regional model and capabilities with Canon before purchase. If you need particular video formats, external audio, stabilization, streaming or long recording times, check that each requirement is supported. See TechRadar’s compact-camera guide.

OM System Tough TG-7: for rugged and outdoor use
The TG-7 is the shortlist’s rugged-use option. Digital Camera World describes it as waterproof and durable and highlights its macro capability. The cited guide does not establish the specific rated limits or conditions here, so check OM System’s manufacturer information before relying on it for a particular depth, temperature or activity. Its rugged construction is a different priority from maximizing zoom range or choosing a larger sensor. See Digital Camera World’s compact-camera guide.
