Call of Duty downloads and updates fail for different reasons on PlayStation, Xbox, Battle.net, Steam, and the Microsoft Store. Start by identifying the exact game and platform, then check service status, free storage, system software, and the internet connection. Retry the platform’s queue before using launcher repair, cache clearing, or database tools. If the problem remains, use Activision Support’s selector for the exact title, platform, and error.
Start with the checks that apply to every platform
A stalled download is not the same problem as damaged game files. Use the least destructive checks first and move to repair tools only when the earlier step does not work. The correct path depends on four things: the platform, the launcher, the stage at which the process fails, and the risk of the recovery step.

1. Confirm the exact game and content
Call of Duty can present a shared hub with separately selectable experiences and packs. 2. Check service status, storage, software, and connection
- Check the platform’s online service status before repeatedly restarting a large download. An outage can prevent a queue from starting even when your home connection works normally.
- Open the console or PC storage screen and make sure enough free space remains for the download and its installation overhead. The free space needed can be greater than the initial package shown in the store.
- Install available console or system-software updates before beginning the game installation. Activision specifically recommends completing available console updates first.
- Run the platform’s built-in internet connection test if the download will not start or repeatedly stops. This helps separate a platform connection problem from a game-file problem.

3. Retry from the platform queue
Open the platform’s Downloads, Uploads, or queue view. Pause and resume the item once. If it still does not move, cancel the queued item and start it again from the game library or launcher. This is safer than deleting game data and should be the first response to a download that is merely stuck.
After restarting, watch which stage fails. A queue that never begins points toward service, account, connection, storage, or selected-content checks. A transfer that reaches completion but cannot install points toward software compatibility, insufficient working space, or damaged files. That distinction tells you whether to repeat the queue or use verification and repair.

Choose the fix by failure stage
Use this quick sequence before trying platform-specific tools:
- Identify the exact title, edition, platform, and launcher.
- Check service status and the platform’s connection test.
- Confirm free storage and install pending system updates.
- Verify that the correct campaign, multiplayer, language, or other content pack is selected.
- Pause and resume the queue; if needed, cancel only the queued download and retry from the library.
- If the transfer completes but installation fails, use verification or repair for that launcher.

Perform one recovery action at a time. If you clear a cache, repair files, and rebuild a database in one session, you will not know which step resolved the issue or caused a new warning.
PlayStation: recover a download that will not start or stalls
PS5 queue recovery
- Open Downloads/Uploads.
- Select the Call of Duty item and choose Pause, then Resume.
- If the transfer still does not progress, cancel and delete the queued download.
- Open your game library, select the title again, and start the download.
- Check PlayStation service status, install any available console software update, and confirm free storage.
- Run the console’s internet connection test if the queue stops again.
These steps address the queue itself without removing the installed game. If the queue repeatedly fails after the service, software, storage, and connection checks, use the later recovery options in PlayStation’s official troubleshooting flow.
PS4 considerations
PS4 provides corresponding download-queue, storage, software, connection, and database options, but its menu names and navigation differ from PS5. Follow the labels shown on your console rather than assuming the PS5 path is identical. Remember that the Warzone availability restriction is specific to Warzone; it is not a general statement about every Call of Duty game on PS4.

Use Safe Mode only after the simple steps
For a download that remains stuck, PlayStation’s guidance includes Safe Mode options to clear the system cache and rebuild the database. Treat these as later troubleshooting steps, not the first action. Read the on-screen warning for each option, make sure important saves are synchronized or otherwise backed up as appropriate, and do not interrupt the console while it performs the operation.
Do not jump to database rebuilding merely because an update is large. First establish that the queue, service, connection, storage, and system software are all in order. Safe Mode is a recovery option for a persistent console problem, not a routine way to speed up every download.
Xbox consoles: install the correct package and content
Open the owned-games installation path
- Open My games & apps.
- Choose Full library, then All owned games.
- Select the Call of Duty title and choose Install.
- When the title supports it, open Choose what to install and select only the campaigns, multiplayer components, or other content you need.
Call of Duty packages and menu labels differ by title, and the available components can change between releases. The sources do not establish one universal recovery sequence for every stalled Xbox update. If an installation fails, first confirm the title and selected content, check Xbox service status, system software, storage, and the connection, then retry from the library. Use the installation page for that specific release if the package does not appear in the expected location.
Choosing fewer components can avoid downloading content you do not plan to use, but it does not repair a failed queue by itself. If the same item repeatedly stops at the same stage, record the displayed error and the selected package before contacting support.

Install through the launcher
In the Battle.net app, open All Games, select the Call of Duty entry, and start the installation or update from that page. Make sure the selected entry matches the title you intend to play; a shared Call of Duty hub can expose more than one experience.
Clear Battle.net data only when the guide calls for it
- Close the Battle.net app completely, following Activision’s cache guidance.
- Delete the Battle.net cache or launcher files specified by that guidance.
- Reopen the app and try the update again.
- If the launcher no longer remembers where the game is installed, use Locate this game to point Battle.net to the existing files instead of assuming a full download is required.
Deleting launcher data can make Battle.net forget game install locations. That consequence is why cache removal should not be treated as a routine first step, and why you should use the launcher’s locate function if the installation disappears from the library. Do not delete the game folder itself unless the title-specific instructions explicitly require it.
PC: verify files in Steam
Run Steam’s file check
- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Select the Call of Duty game and open its file-management or properties screen.
- Run Steam’s Verify integrity of game files command, using the label shown in your current client.
- Allow the check and any replacement download to finish before launching the game again.
Activision’s guidance warns that Steam may report one or more verification failures for local configuration files. Those files can be normal and do not automatically mean the game installation is broken. Do not delete all game files as a generic fix; verify first and follow the result shown by Steam.

Verification is appropriate when an update downloaded but the launcher reports damaged or missing files. It is not a substitute for checking Steam service status, available disk space, or a failed internet connection when the download has not started at all.
PC: Microsoft Store and Xbox app installations
Install from the Store library
For Black Ops 6 installed through Microsoft Store, open the Store’s library, select the game, and start the installation or update there. Some Call of Duty PC installations use the Xbox app instead, so follow the installation page for the exact title and route shown on your PC.
Use Verify and Repair carefully
- Open the game’s Manage screen.
- Open Files.
- Choose Verify and Repair.
- Read the warning, then confirm only when you understand how the operation may affect the installation.
The Microsoft Store repair process displays a warning concerning mods and saved games. Protect saves as appropriate and understand that modified files may need to be restored after repair. If the game is managed by the Xbox app rather than Store, use the controls exposed by that app and the title-specific Activision installation instructions.
When an update fails after downloading
Separate a queue problem from a file problem
If the item never begins transferring, concentrate on service status, connection, storage, software, and queue controls. If the transfer completes but installation fails, the launcher’s verification or repair command is more relevant. On a console, retry the installation after confirming storage and software; on PC, use the launcher-specific procedure instead of applying a console database step.
Do not combine destructive steps
Clearing cache, deleting launcher files, repairing an installation, and rebuilding a console database have different consequences. Perform one recovery action at a time so you can identify what changed. Read warnings before confirming, especially where a tool can forget an install location, affect mods or saves, or rewrite local data.

Warzone PC: title-specific stability checks
Activision’s Warzone PC troubleshooting page, dated March 11, 2026, contains recommendations that are specific to Warzone and can change as the game and drivers change. Check that current page for its exact Windows and graphics-driver values instead of treating any listed version as a permanent requirement for every Call of Duty title.
Let shader preloading finish
Allow shader preloading to complete before judging performance or repeatedly restarting the game. Navigating away from the main menu can stop the preload and affect performance. Leave the process alone until it reports completion.

Reduce software conflicts
The Warzone guidance also discusses disabling potentially conflicting applications. Close or disable the applications identified by the current support page one at a time, then test the game. If crashes continue, use Activision’s PC crash-report process and include the exact title, platform, and error details.

When the platform and launcher steps do not solve the problem, open Activision Support’s issue selector and choose the exact game, platform, and symptom. The selector uses the reader-facing issue wording My game won’t load or install, among other categories.
Record the exact error message, whether the failure occurs before downloading, during the transfer, or while installing, the platform and launcher, the title and selected content, and which recovery step you already completed. This distinguishes a download problem from an account, platform-service, or title-specific issue and prevents support from sending you through unrelated steps.
What not to assume
- There is no single fix that applies to every Call of Duty release and platform.
- A large update is not evidence by itself that the console or launcher is damaged; first check the selected content and available storage.
- A verification warning about local configuration files in Steam does not automatically require replacing those files.
