Reliable bug fixing starts by identifying what the system was supposed to guarantee, then tracing where actual behavior diverged. The component showing an error is not necessarily the component that caused it: a wrong screen, duplicate record, or failed deployment may originate in state handling, an API contract, concurrent writes, or configuration.
Jose Maria Iriarte presents this as “system stabilization engineering” in his DEV Community article. It is an author’s framing, not a formal industry standard. The practical idea is to restore predictable behavior at the mechanism that broke the guarantee—not merely hide the symptom.

Start with the guarantee, not the apparent fix
A bug report records an observation, not a diagnosis. “The UI sometimes displays the wrong data,” “an API endpoint occasionally creates duplicate records,” “a request works locally but fails after deployment,” and “a message is processed twice” describe symptoms. Each could have more than one cause.

Before changing code, write down the expected behavior: the inputs and conditions, the result, the state transition, whether the work is synchronous or asynchronous, and what should happen when operations overlap. Then state the invariant—the condition that must remain true. Examples include unique project identifiers, access limited to authorized users, search results matching the current query, completed updates eventually appearing in the interface, and a completed operation not being applied twice.

- Used Book in Good Condition
This shifts the question from “How do I make this error go away?” to “What guarantee failed, and what mechanism must change to make it reliable?”
Reconstruct the operation across system boundaries
Collect evidence that lets you rebuild the sequence of events, rather than treating isolated log lines as a complete explanation. Follow the operation through the client, API, domain logic, database, event consumer, user interface, and runtime environment as applicable.

- Record the relevant input, decisions, and correlation identifiers.
- Inspect actual HTTP requests and responses, including data shapes, types, dates, enum values, endpoints, headers, and API versions.
- Trace database queries, transaction boundaries, and concurrent writes.
- Follow message publication, consumption, retries, completion, and cancellation.
- Compare the deployed artifact, runtime, dependencies, configuration, and migrations with the environment where the operation succeeds.
The aim is to locate where the guarantee failed, not to assign blame to a particular layer.

Similar symptoms can demand different remedies. Diagnose the mechanism before selecting a fix.
| Failure mechanism | What to investigate | Direction for a repair |
|---|---|---|
| Logic or business rule | Whether the implemented predicate matches the intended rule, including boundary inputs. | Correct the domain logic and test the rule at its boundaries. |
| State or lifecycle | Whether the operation succeeds but the UI, cache, shared store, or background work misses the resulting transition. | Correct state propagation and lifecycle handling. |
| API contract mismatch | Whether components disagree about data shape, types, dates, enum serialization, endpoint, headers, or API version. | Align the contract and verify the requests and responses actually exchanged. |
| Database integrity or concurrency | Duplicate inserts, lost updates, missing transaction boundaries, deadlocks, and integrity violations. | Enforce the integrity rule at the appropriate boundary and handle conflicts. An existence check alone cannot guarantee uniqueness when writes race. |
| Exception or crash | Which assumption failed and why; an exception marks an execution failure but does not by itself identify its cause. | Fix the failed assumption. Broadly suppressing an exception can make failure look like success. |
| Authentication or authorization | Whether identity is valid and whether that identity may access the specific resource. | Check identity validation and resource permission as distinct requirements. |
| Messaging or eventual consistency | Delay, failed or duplicate processing, ordering, and whether retries are safe. | Make processing behavior explicit for delay and repetition; ensure retries cannot apply a completed operation twice. |
| Environment or deployment drift | Differences in configuration, dependencies, runtime, migrations, or deployed artifact. | Correct the mismatch and validate against the relevant production configuration. |
A retry, null check, cache clear, or UI refresh may be appropriate in a diagnosed case, but none is a universal bug fix. Used without diagnosis, such workarounds can conceal the cause or intensify failures—for example, retries can repeat a non-idempotent operation.
Verify the invariant under the conditions that exposed the bug
A fix is not established merely because the original error message disappears in one run. Recreate the conditions that could violate the required behavior and assert the invariant directly.

- For suspected races, overlap requests or operations and check that the result remains valid.
- For duplicate writes, issue concurrent requests and confirm uniqueness is preserved.
- For lifecycle problems, navigate away or change the current query while responses are delayed; confirm stale work cannot overwrite current state.
- For domain rules, test invalid and boundary inputs.
- For messaging, exercise delayed, failed, repeated, and out-of-order processing where relevant.
- For deployment failures, validate with the actual production configuration and the deployed artifact.
Compare plausible fixes by asking which invariant each restores, whether it survives concurrency or dependency failure, whether it respects the request and component lifecycle, and what assumptions another system boundary could violate.

Iriarte’s article offers technical guidance and examples, not reported empirical results. It provides no named study statistic or organizational figure establishing bug prevalence, reliability gains, or productivity effects, so those numbers should not be inferred from the examples.
