BUGCODE_USB_DRIVER is Windows stop code 0x000000FE. It means an error occurred in the USB driver stack, but the label alone cannot identify one bad device, cable, hub, port, or driver. The safest path is to remove recently added hardware, start Windows 10 in Safe Mode if necessary, inspect Device Manager, install pending updates, isolate USB devices and power, then use System Restore or a memory-dump analysis if the crash continues.
What BUGCODE_USB_DRIVER (0x000000FE) means
Microsoft defines the message as follows: “The BUGCODE_USB_DRIVER bug check has a value of 0x000000FE. This indicates that an error has occurred in a universal serial bus (USB) driver.” A bug check is Windows’ protective stop. When the operating system detects a condition that could compromise safe operation, it halts instead of continuing with potentially corrupted data.

The code describes a family of USB-stack violations, not a diagnosis of one manufacturer’s product. Depending on the first bug-check parameter, Microsoft documents possibilities including an internal USB-stack error, an invalid or duplicate I/O request packet (IRP) or USB request block (URB), a miniport or hardware failure, corrupted USB data structures, or a USB-port timeout. Those categories explain why the same 0xFE screen can be triggered by a peripheral, a hub or dock, a cable, inadequate power, firmware, or a Windows driver.
Why plugging in a USB device can trigger the crash
Connecting a device causes Windows to enumerate it, load or select a driver, exchange USB requests, and provide power. A fault can appear only during one of those events. A newly installed device may bring an incompatible driver; a damaged cable can corrupt communication; a hub or dock can mis-handle requests; or a bus-powered device can draw more power than the setup reliably provides. USB-C cables and ports also differ in supported data, display, and power features, so physical fit does not prove feature compatibility.

Before troubleshooting: protect your work and establish the timeline
- Save what you can and shut down normally if Windows remains usable. Repeated forced restarts can make it harder to determine which change preceded the failure.
- Write down the exact stop text, when the crash occurs, and what is connected at that moment. Note whether it happens at boot, when a device is plugged in, during file transfer, or after the computer wakes.
- List hardware, drivers, firmware, and Windows changes made shortly before the first crash. A timeline is more useful than guessing from the stop-code name.
- Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Troubleshooting can still make an existing installation usable, but after stability is restored, check whether the computer can move to a currently supported Windows release.
Fix 0x000000FE step by step
1. Remove hardware added before the crashes
Shut down the computer. Unplug every USB device or hub that was added shortly before the problem began, including docks, storage devices, printers, phones, webcams, controllers, and adapters. Leave only devices required to operate the PC, such as the built-in keyboard or touchpad where applicable, then restart.
If the blue screen stops, reconnect the removed items one at a time and restart or repeat the activity that normally triggers the failure after each connection. The device after which the crash returns is a strong suspect, but it is not conclusive: the same device may work through a different port, cable, or powered hub. If removing new hardware does not change the behavior, continue rather than assuming the hardware is cleared.
2. Use Safe Mode when normal startup is unstable
Safe Mode loads a limited set of Windows components, which lets you perform driver and recovery checks without all normal startup software.

- Open Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
- Under Advanced startup, select Restart now.
- Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- After the restart, press 4 for Safe Mode or 5 for Safe Mode with Networking if network access is needed.
If Windows is too unstable to reach Settings, interrupt startup until the Windows Recovery Environment appears, then use the same Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings route. In Safe Mode, disconnect the suspect USB hardware, inspect Device Manager, remove a recently changed driver, and prepare a restore operation. If the problem occurs only in normal mode, a normal-startup driver or service is more likely than a basic USB connection alone.
3. Inspect Device Manager and act on the status code
Right-click Start and open Device Manager. Expand relevant categories such as Universal Serial Bus controllers, and also check the category for the attached product (for example, printers, imaging devices, keyboards, or network adapters).
- Look for a yellow exclamation mark or an entry that appeared when the crashes began.
- Open the device’s Properties and read Device status, including any Windows error code.
- On the Driver tab, choose Update Driver and let Windows search, or install the correct package supplied by the computer or device manufacturer.
- If updating does not help, use Roll Back Driver when available and the failure started after an update.
- As a diagnostic test, choose Disable device or Uninstall device, restart, and test with the hardware disconnected. Reinstall only the driver intended for that exact model and Windows edition.
Device Manager may show no warning even when a USB cable, hub, power source, firmware issue, or timing-dependent driver fault is involved. Treat a clean status as one piece of evidence, not proof that every USB component is healthy.

Do not mix several changes in one reboot cycle; changing one variable at a time preserves the evidence about what helped.
5. Isolate ports, hubs, docks, cables, and devices
With the PC shut down or the device safely disconnected, reduce the setup to one essential USB device. Then test the variables systematically:

- Where the device uses a detachable lead, test a known-good cable with the required data and power capability.
- Try the suspect device on another computer, if available, or try a known-good device on the suspect port.
- Reconnect devices one at a time and repeat the action that normally causes the crash.
A failure that follows one device points toward that device, its cable, or its driver. A failure that stays with one physical port suggests the port, its controller, or power delivery. A failure that appears only through a hub or dock makes that intermediary and its power supply the next focus. USB-C shape alone is not enough to establish that a cable supports the data rate, display mode, or power role the device requires.
6. Check USB power and external supplies
Microsoft notes that some USB devices require external power. Connect a powered device to its specified adapter, run the laptop from AC power while testing, and disconnect USB devices that are not needed. If a setup repeatedly fails when several devices share one hub, a powered USB hub can be used as a diagnostic or power-management aid; it cannot repair a defective driver or hardware component by itself.

7. Restore Windows when the fault began after a change
If updates, driver rollback, hardware removal, and isolation do not stop the crashes, use System Restore to return system files and driver configuration to a restore point created before the problem. In Windows Recovery Environment, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore. Read the restore-point date and affected programs before confirming.
If no suitable restore point exists, use the recovery options available in Windows installation or recovery media. Back up personal files before any reset or reinstall. Recovery changes are more intrusive and less reversible than unplugging a device or rolling back one driver, so reserve them for cases where the evidence points to system-wide corruption or no individual component can be isolated.
8. Capture a dump and analyze it with WinDbg
When 0xFE keeps returning, evidence from a memory dump is stronger than selecting a driver because its name sounds related. Configure Windows to create a small or kernel memory dump in System Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery > Settings, reproduce the crash if necessary, and open the resulting dump in WinDbg.
In WinDbg, run the bug-check analysis and review the 0xFE parameters and any driver named by the analysis. Compare that driver with the hardware and timeline you recorded. If the analysis identifies a particular driver, update it from the PC or device manufacturer, roll it back to the last known-good version, or disable the associated device for testing. A dump can still implicate a component indirectly; confirm the result by changing one variable and reproducing the workload.

| Action | Intrusiveness | Diagnostic value | Reversibility | What it can distinguish |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Unplug recent hardware | Low | High for timing-related faults | Immediate | Recently added device, hub, dock, or cable |
| Change port, cable, or direct connection | Low | High for physical-path faults | Immediate | Port, cable, hub, and USB-C capability differences |
| Check Device Manager | Low | Medium to high when a status code or warning appears | Immediate | Driver installation and device-state problems |
| Update or roll back one driver | Medium | High when the timeline matches a driver change | Usually reversible | Regression versus missing, damaged, or incompatible driver |
| Use a powered USB hub or external supply | Low to medium | Medium for power and hub behavior | Immediate | Power-delivery and hub-load issues |
| System Restore | High | Medium for system-change faults | Reversible only while restore points remain | Recent Windows, driver, or configuration change |
| WinDbg dump analysis | Medium | Highest available for recurring crashes | Does not change hardware | Driver and bug-check parameter evidence |
When the stop code is not enough
Do not replace a motherboard, USB controller, or peripheral solely because the screen says 0x000000FE. The exact failing component cannot be named without the computer’s dump, stop-screen parameters, Device Manager status, hardware list, and crash timing. A device that works on another computer may still conflict with one driver or port on this installation, while a device that fails everywhere is stronger evidence of a hardware or cable defect.
If the crash continues with all nonessential USB hardware removed, in Safe Mode, and after appropriate driver rollback, treat it as a broader Windows or platform problem. Preserve dumps and the timeline, use recovery options, and consider moving the machine to a supported Windows release once hardware compatibility has been checked.
