Try another app on the same device, then try the sports stream on another supported device if you can. That quick comparison helps narrow the cause before you restart equipment or contact support.
Why is my streaming quality poor or always freezing or stalling?
Buffering and poor picture quality can come from a weak or unstable connection, household network congestion, Wi-Fi interference, an app or device issue, or a problem with the streaming service. A fast internet plan—or a single good speed-test result—does not rule out local instability. ESPN identifies router distance, the number of connected devices, and ISP outages or network issues as possible factors in playback quality. ESPN’s playback troubleshooting guide recommends testing another app and device to help isolate the cause.

Use another app and device to narrow it down
- If several apps fail on multiple devices, check the home network or contact your internet provider.
- If other apps work but one sports app or event does not, focus on that service or app and contact its support if the issue continues.
- If the same service works on another device, the original device or its app is a more likely place to troubleshoot.
These checks can identify where the problem appears, but they do not confirm whether a specific event or provider is experiencing an outage.

How much internet speed does a live sports stream need?
There is no single Mbps figure that guarantees smooth live sports. Compare your connection with the recommendation for the service and picture quality you are using, and account for other devices sharing the network.

Make one change at a time and test playback after each step. This makes it easier to tell what helped.

- Close and reopen the streaming app. Exit it fully, reopen it, and return to the event.
- Restart the viewing device. Reopen the stream after it starts back up.
- Check for app and device updates. Install available updates for the streaming app and the device’s operating system.
- Test another app. If that app also buffers, investigate the connection or device rather than assuming the sports service is the only cause.
- Reinstall the app if the fault remains limited to it. Try this after the quicker checks, then sign in and test the stream again.
ESPN and YouTube TV both include app, device, and playback checks in their troubleshooting advice. ESPN’s guide also says to check HDMI connections when using a connected display; that check does not establish that replacing a cable will fix buffering.
How do I restart the modem and router safely?
If the app and device checks do not help, power-cycle your network equipment. This step applies to a modem/router connection, not a cellular-only connection.

- Turn off the viewing device and modem/router.
- Disconnect the modem/router from power and wait at least 30 seconds.
- Reconnect and restart the modem and router, then turn the viewing device back on.
- Open the sports app and test the stream again.
This sequence follows ESPN’s power-cycle instructions. YouTube TV separately advises unplugging the router, waiting 30 seconds, and plugging it back in.
Can lowering video quality stop buffering?
It may help when the connection is constrained or shared: YouTube TV recommends lowering playback quality and warns that many simultaneous streams can cause buffering. Close other applications or reduce other people’s video use on the network, then test the live feed. A lower-quality setting can be less detailed but may need less bandwidth; whether it improves playback depends on the particular connection and device.

ESPN also suggests closing other computer applications and waiting several minutes during internet congestion. Its advice is to try these steps and check playback, not to treat a quality change as a guaranteed fix.

Why can I hear the game but not see it?
Audio that continues while video fails can indicate that the connection is not adequate for video, even if audio still comes through. NFL+ lists insufficient connection speed as one possible explanation for this symptom and recommends restarting the modem/router and testing the connection. Try the app, device, and network checks above; if the problem persists only in NFL+, contact NFL+ support with the details of the failure.

When should I contact the streaming service?
Contact the service if the fault remains limited to its app or stream after you have tested another app or device and tried the relevant troubleshooting steps. ESPN advises contacting customer support if its playback steps do not resolve the issue; for live mobile help, its guidance points users to Contact Support in the app settings.
Give support enough detail to distinguish a connection problem from an app, device, or event-specific failure:
- The event or program and the date and time the issue occurred.
- Your device and the platform or app you used.
- Your location and, if available, the connection speed measured under actual viewing conditions.
- Whether other apps and devices worked, and which checks you already tried.
- The exact symptom: repeated buffering, low resolution, blank picture, or audio without video.
For a persistent problem across apps and devices, contact your internet provider instead. The official platform guidance cited here does not verify whether any particular live event is currently affected by an outage.
