If you can edit the webpage, fix the print layout and check the result in the browser or conversion tool that creates the PDF. A targeted break-inside: avoid rule can keep a small related block—such as a figure and caption—together. It cannot keep content taller than a page intact. If you only have the finished PDF, the right repair depends on how it was generated; there is no universal PDF-only fix established here.
First identify where you can make the change
A PDF’s page breaks may reflect print-specific webpage styles as well as the behavior of the browser or conversion engine. Start by determining whether you can edit the source page or its print stylesheet, and which renderer produced the PDF. If the original page is available, compare its print preview with the saved PDF. If you have only the PDF, a CSS change to the webpage will not directly repair that file; you need to identify and address the PDF’s own layout problem.

- You can edit the webpage: inspect its print output and adjust print styles, then regenerate the PDF.
- You cannot edit the webpage: inspect the existing PDF and find out which browser or conversion engine created it. The available guidance does not establish a universal repair sequence for editing an existing PDF without its source.
Check the webpage’s print layout
A page can look correct on screen but use different styles when printed. Inspect the browser’s print preview, including page size and margins, before changing CSS. The MDN guides to printing with CSS describe @media print for print-specific styles and @page for printed-page rules.

Make adjustments in the print styles rather than assuming that the screen layout will translate cleanly to paper. Regenerate the PDF after each change and inspect the result in the renderer you intend to use. Standards document CSS behavior, but do not guarantee identical pagination across every browser, version, conversion engine, or webpage.

Keep small related blocks together selectively
For a block that should not split internally, try break-inside: avoid in the print stylesheet. MDN defines break-inside as controlling how page, column, or region breaks behave inside a generated box: MDN: break-inside.
@media print {
.keep-together {
break-inside: avoid;
}
}
Apply the class to the specific unit that belongs together—for example, a figure and its caption—rather than indiscriminately to every element. The older page-break-inside name remains a compatibility alias; for new styles, use break-inside.

This is a request to avoid a break inside the selected box, not a promise that the browser can fit any content on one page. If the box is taller than the printable page, its content must continue onto later pages to be preserved. W3C print-profile guidance addresses this constraint, and CSS 2.2 allows user agents to choose among permitted break points: W3C CSS Fragmentation Module Level 3 and CSS 2.2: Page breaks.

- Open the page in the browser or conversion engine that will generate the PDF.
- Inspect the print preview and confirm page size, margins, and the locations of problem breaks.
- Add or adjust print-specific rules, using
break-inside: avoidonly on compact blocks that should remain together. - Regenerate the PDF and inspect the affected pages. If pagination still differs, verify the output in the actual target renderer; another browser or conversion engine may paginate differently.
A report that breaks “gradually” through a long document does not, by itself, identify the cause. The symptom alone cannot establish whether the problem is the page’s print styling, the renderer, or a particular content block.

If you only have the finished PDF
First find out how the file was made and whether the source webpage is still available. If you can recover the page and its print styles, correcting those and exporting again gives you a way to address the cause. If the webpage is unavailable or uneditable, the guidance here does not establish a dependable PDF-only sequence; the actual file and the software that created it need to be examined before choosing a repair.
Do not assume that a CSS break rule can fix an already-generated PDF. It affects layout when content is paginated by a renderer; it does not rewrite the page layout inside an existing file.

Troubleshooting by symptom
- A figure and caption split across pages: put both in a suitable wrapper and try
break-inside: avoidon that wrapper in print styles. - A block still splits despite the rule: check that the rule applies to the box that contains the content, and whether the block is taller than the printable page.
- The preview looks right but the PDF does not: check the PDF output in the renderer that actually creates it; preview and conversion behavior may differ.
- Breaks shift progressively in a long document: treat that as a symptom, not a diagnosis. Compare the source page, print output, and renderer before changing rules.
- You cannot edit the source page: identify the PDF’s creator and inspect the file; a source-level CSS change is not available unless you can regenerate it from the webpage.

If you want a screenshot or PDF from a URL without configuring a browser capture workflow, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. For a PDF, one GET request can return a PDF; the example below requests a WebP screenshot. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API options and PDF parameters.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Frequently Asked Questions
Does break-inside: avoid guarantee that an element stays on one PDF page?
No. It asks the renderer to avoid breaking inside the selected box; content taller than the printable page still has to flow onto another page.

Can I use CSS to repair page breaks in a PDF I already have?
CSS affects pagination when a webpage is rendered for printing. It does not directly change an existing PDF; whether that file can be repaired depends on the file and the software used to create it.
