First check whether your screenshot is being captured at CSS-pixel size or device-pixel size. On a Retina or other high-density display, those are different dimensions: in Playwright, set scale: "device" for a higher-resolution image, or scale: "css" for an image whose pixel dimensions match the page’s CSS dimensions. A scale setting cannot fix low-resolution images inside the page or softness introduced by resizing later.
Why a screenshot can look blurry on a Retina display
Web pages are laid out in CSS pixels, while a high-density display can use multiple physical pixels to represent one CSS pixel. The browser’s window.devicePixelRatio reports the ratio of physical pixels to CSS pixels. MDN gives 2 as an expected value on HiDPI/Retina displays, but the actual value can depend on the display and its configuration. MDN: Window.devicePixelRatio

Consequently, a page that is 1,200 CSS pixels wide may be represented by 2,400 physical pixels when the ratio is 2. A screenshot saved at one output pixel per CSS pixel will have fewer pixels than one saved at device-pixel resolution. The first can look soft when enlarged to fill a high-density display; the second has more detail but larger dimensions and files.

Inspect the browser’s ratio
- Open the page in the browser and open its developer console.
- Run
window.devicePixelRatio. - Record the returned value alongside the screenshot’s pixel dimensions and the browser viewport dimensions.
The ratio helps explain why dimensions differ; it is not a direct measurement of screenshot sharpness. When diagnosing a blurry capture, note the tool and browser as well as the ratio and the tool’s screenshot scale setting.

Choose the right Playwright screenshot scale
Playwright’s screenshot API offers two relevant values for its scale option. Choose based on the intended deliverable, rather than assuming that the largest output is always preferable. Playwright screenshot API

These outputs have different target dimensions, so do not judge them as though they were intended to be the same size. Use device scale when detail is the priority; use CSS scale when matching CSS-pixel dimensions is the priority.

Capture a sharper screenshot with Playwright

If device-scale capture is still soft
Higher-resolution capture only changes the screenshot’s output scale. It cannot add detail that was not available in the captured page. Check whether the image file was resized after capture, and whether images displayed within the page are themselves low-resolution. Those are sensible next checks, but a soft result does not establish one universal cause.
- Compare the saved pixel dimensions with the intended CSS-sized or device-sized output.
- Check image-processing or export steps for resizing or compression after the screenshot was taken.
- Inspect page assets that look soft in the browser itself; a screenshot scale setting does not increase their source resolution.
- For a reproducible bug report, include the screenshot tool, browser,
window.devicePixelRatio, selected scale, and saved image dimensions.

Does a device pixel ratio of 2 apply to every Retina display?
No. MDN describes 2 as an expected value on HiDPI/Retina displays; the actual ratio depends on the display and configuration.
Will device-scale screenshots always have exactly twice the width and height?
Not necessarily. The output dimensions depend on the effective device pixel ratio and capture environment; inspect the ratio and saved dimensions rather than assuming a fixed multiplier.
