Find where the blur enters
Inspect the saved screenshot at its native pixel dimensions, then compare it with the version shown in any preview, embedded page, or receiving app. If the file is sharp at native scale but looks soft only later, investigate that later display or processing step. The behavior of any particular preview or sharing app depends on the app; the browser documentation cited here does not establish how individual apps resize or compress images.

Also check the browser’s zoom level and run window.devicePixelRatio in the page’s developer console. The value is the ratio of physical pixels to CSS pixels for the current display, and browser page zoom can affect it; pinch zoom does not. A DPR greater than 1 means a CSS pixel corresponds to multiple physical pixels. An undersized canvas bitmap or raster image may therefore be enlarged for display or capture and look soft. MDN documents the DPR property (last modified August 21, 2026).

Keep the canvas’s layout size in CSS pixels, but allocate its drawing bitmap at the rendered width and height multiplied by DPR. Scale the 2D context by the same ratio so existing drawing coordinates can remain in CSS pixels. Measure the actual rendered size so responsive layouts are handled correctly.

Recalculate when the rendered canvas size or DPR changes, such as when a window moves to a display with a different pixel density. Capture with Chrome DevTools at the intended DPR

Open Chrome DevTools and turn on device mode.

Choose a device preset or a responsive viewport. To set a particular device pixel ratio, open More options > Add device pixel ratio.

For the visible viewport, choose More options > Capture screenshot. For the whole page, choose More options > Capture full size screenshot.

Inspect the saved file at native scale and check its pixel dimensions. Keep the viewport, zoom, DPR, and capture scope consistent when comparing results.
Chrome describes device mode as a “first-order approximation” of a mobile device. If exact behavior on a particular phone or display matters, verify on that actual device rather than treating simulation as a perfect substitute. See Chrome’s device mode and screenshot documentation.
Check raster images and the exported file
If text and vector elements are crisp but a particular image is soft, compare that image’s intrinsic pixel dimensions with the size at which the page renders it. A raster source with too few pixels has to be enlarged; use a higher-resolution source appropriate to its displayed size. Inspect the exported screenshot at 100% scale before enlarging it again, since extra enlargement cannot restore detail absent from the source.

When comparing capture methods, use the same page, viewport dimensions, zoom, DPR, and scope (viewport or full page). Compare exported pixel dimensions and inspect each file at native scale. The cited documentation describes Chrome’s DPR controls and capture modes, but does not establish that one browser universally produces sharper screenshots.

Troubleshooting

The screenshot is sharp in one view but blurry in another: inspect the saved file at native scale. If it is crisp there, check the later preview, embed, or processing step rather than changing the page’s canvas.

Canvas remains soft at DPR above 1: check that the backing bitmap dimensions use the measured CSS size multiplied by DPR, and that the context is scaled by the same value. Redraw after changing canvas dimensions, because setting width or height clears its drawing surface.

Canvas becomes blurry after resizing or moving displays: update its backing dimensions and redraw when the rendered size or DPR changes. A fixed initial size may no longer match the current layout or display.

Only photos or other raster assets are soft: verify the source image’s intrinsic dimensions against its rendered size and use a more suitable higher-resolution source if needed.

DevTools output differs from a phone: device mode is an approximation. Compare on the target device when fidelity is important, keeping capture scope and viewport conditions in mind.
