If a Chrome DevTools screenshot looks blurry, first check whether the page is already fuzzy in the DevTools viewport. If it is, investigate the site’s image assets and responsive-image selection. If the page looks sharp but the saved image does not, set the intended viewport and device pixel ratio (DPR), choose the right capture scope, and check the exported file’s pixel dimensions.
Find out where the blur starts
Before changing settings, compare the page in Chrome’s DevTools Device mode with the saved screenshot at its original size. The cause depends on where softness first appears:

- Already blurry in the DevTools viewport: Check the image asset, its rendered size, and which responsive image the page selected.
- Sharp in DevTools, soft or undersized in the file: Check the viewport, DPR, capture method, and—if you use automation—any screenshot scaling settings.
- Sharp in the original file, soft after sharing: Compare the original with the shared copy. Resizing or compression by a later app is possible, but the sources cited here do not establish the behavior of any particular app.
Set the viewport and device pixel ratio
In Chrome, open DevTools and turn on Device mode using the device toolbar button. Choose Responsive and enter the desired width and height, or select a device preset. These dimensions define the page’s CSS layout viewport; by themselves, they do not guarantee a particular screenshot bitmap size.
Chrome defines device pixel ratio (DPR) as “the ratio between physical pixels on the hardware screen and logical (CSS) pixels.” A higher DPR means Chrome draws each CSS pixel using more physical pixels, which can produce a denser capture. To expose the control, open the Device toolbar’s More options menu, choose Add device pixel ratio, and set the intended value in the toolbar. Use the target device’s DPR when reproducing its rendering; if you want more pixels, choose a larger DPR and check the resulting file rather than assuming the setting guarantees a specific output size. Chrome’s Device mode documentation explains its viewport and DPR controls.

- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Choose the right screenshot scope
In the Device toolbar, open More options and choose the capture action that matches what you need:
- Capture screenshot: Saves the current viewport.
- Capture a full size screenshot: Captures the whole page, including content beyond the current viewport.
A full-page capture changes the framing and page coverage; it is not, by itself, a fix for a low-resolution viewport image. Chrome documents these capture options in its Device mode guide.

Check the exported image’s dimensions
Inspect the PNG’s pixel width and height in your image viewer or file properties. Compare those numbers with the pixel dimensions you expected from your CSS viewport and DPR. If the file has enough pixels but looks soft only after you paste, upload, or embed it elsewhere, compare that copy with the original to see whether the later step resized or compressed it.

A screenshot records what the browser rendered; it cannot add detail absent from the source image. Check which image URL the page loaded, the source file’s dimensions, and how large the image is displayed in CSS. If a low-resolution asset is stretched to a larger rendered size, changing screenshot settings will not restore its missing detail.

For a site you maintain, provide appropriately sized responsive image variants so the browser can choose an asset suited to the viewport and DPR. Chrome Lighthouse guidance notes that its rendered-size comparison accounts for DPR and recommends responsive images selected using viewport dimensions and other conditions. Vector formats such as SVG can be appropriate for graphics that need to scale across sizes. See Chrome’s guidance on responsive images.
When screenshots are captured through automation
If a script uses the Chrome DevTools Protocol, inspect both the emulated device metrics and the screenshot parameters. The Page domain’s device metrics include deviceScaleFactor; its screenshot command also provides a scale control. A metric override or output rescaling can change the final image. Compare those values and the saved file dimensions against the intended CSS viewport and pixel size. The relevant protocol references are setDeviceMetricsOverride and captureScreenshot.

Use a real phone when fidelity matters
DevTools Device mode approximates mobile conditions from desktop Chrome; it does not run the page on the simulated phone’s actual hardware. If the screenshot must match a particular device closely, validate it on that device as well. Chrome describes this limitation in its Device mode documentation.

Quick troubleshooting guide
| What you observe | Likely area to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The page is sharp, but the screenshot is small or soft | Viewport, DPR, or automation scaling | Set the intended viewport and DPR, then inspect the exported pixel dimensions. |
| Images look fuzzy before capture | Source asset or responsive-image selection | Check the selected image, rendered size, responsive variants, and whether SVG is suitable. |
| The original is sharp, but a shared copy looks soft | Possible downstream resizing or compression | Compare the original file with the copy; do not assume a particular sharing app caused it. |
| You need the entire page, not just the visible screen | Capture scope | Use More options > Capture a full size screenshot. |
| You need to match a real phone | Limits of desktop emulation | Check the result on the actual device. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a higher DPR always make a screenshot sharper?
Not necessarily. DPR can increase pixel density, but it cannot restore detail missing from a source image, and the saved dimensions should be checked.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsShould I capture the viewport or the full page?
Use a viewport capture for the visible screen and a full-size capture when you need content beyond it.
Does Device mode reproduce a phone exactly?
No. It approximates mobile behavior from desktop Chrome; validate on the actual device when exact fidelity matters.
