For a sharper, device-resolution page image, set scale: "device" in page.screenshot(). Playwright maps each output pixel to a device pixel at that setting. If you need a smaller image with one output pixel per CSS pixel, use scale: "css" instead. Scale is a useful first check, not a universal blur fix.
Set the screenshot scale for the output you need
Playwright’s screenshot scale option chooses how page pixels map to image pixels. The API documents "device" as one output pixel per device pixel; on a high-DPI display, that can make the screenshot twice as large or larger than a CSS-scale image. "css" produces one output pixel per CSS pixel and keeps the image smaller. See the Playwright Page API.

Make direct screenshots and visual assertions consistent
The documented defaults differ by API: page.screenshot() defaults to "device", while Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion defaults to "css". If a saved screenshot looks different from a test baseline, set the intended scale explicitly in both places rather than assuming they match. See the PageAssertions API.

If the image still looks blurry
Changing scale addresses the mapping between CSS and output pixels. It cannot guarantee that every blur problem will disappear: the cited Playwright documentation does not establish scale as the cause of all blurry screenshots.
- Check the output dimensions. Confirm whether you intended CSS-pixel or device-pixel output and whether the saved image has the expected dimensions.
- Check the image at its intended display size. A device-scale image may be larger than a CSS-scale image; viewing it scaled down can change how sharp it appears.
- Check the page content. A low-resolution source asset or application-specific rendering may remain soft regardless of screenshot scale.
- Check the comparison setup. Browser rendering can vary with operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Playwright recommends generating and comparing visual baselines in the same environment. See Visual comparisons | Playwright.
