First check whether a photo looks blurry on the slide while editing or only after you start the slideshow. If it is blurry in both places, investigate the image and PowerPoint’s compression settings. If it is sharp while editing but blurry on a projector or external display, troubleshoot the display output instead.
Find out where the blur starts
Compare the same photo in the normal editing view and in Slide Show. Then note whether the problem affects one picture or every picture, and whether it appears on the computer screen, an external monitor, or a projector. These checks help distinguish a low-detail image from a slideshow or display problem.

If a photo is blurry while editing
Check the source image first
Use the original photo or a higher-quality copy if you have one. A small image enlarged substantially can look soft because it does not contain enough detail for the displayed size. Previous edits or compression may also have discarded detail. PowerPoint settings can help prevent further loss, but cannot recreate pixels that are missing from the source.

In desktop PowerPoint for Windows, open File > Options > Advanced > Image Size and Quality and check the options for the current presentation. Where available, choose High fidelity as the default resolution. If picture quality matters more than presentation file size, select Do not compress images in file. Microsoft says High fidelity keeps compression minimal and avoids it unless an image exceeds the document canvas; PowerPoint 2016 and later use High fidelity by default. Menu names and availability can vary by version and platform.

Turning off compression may improve picture quality, but can make the presentation file much larger, as Microsoft explains. The High fidelity option is intended for minimal compression and better rendering on high-resolution displays. Microsoft’s picture-compression guidance also identifies 220 ppi as the default picture resolution in Microsoft 365; that is a software setting, not a universal requirement for every slideshow photo. Do not use compression as a repair
Picture Format > Compress Pictures is a file-size reduction tool, not a way to sharpen a photo. Choosing a lower resolution can make it look worse. Options that delete cropped areas or discard editing data can also remove image information or make earlier edits impossible to restore without reinserting the original. Save an untouched copy before making destructive changes. Microsoft’s guidance on reducing a PowerPoint file’s size describes these trade-offs.

Use sharpness correction only for a modest visual adjustment
In supported desktop versions, select the picture and use Picture Format > Corrections to preview sharpness adjustments. This may improve the way an image appears, but it is not a substitute for a better original and cannot reliably restore fine detail already lost. See Microsoft’s picture sharpness instructions.
If photos are sharp while editing but blurry in Slide Show
Check the monitor and display resolution
Confirm which screen is showing the slideshow and compare the computer’s output with the monitor or projector’s resolution. On Windows, blur that begins after connecting or disconnecting a monitor, docking, undocking, or changing display scaling may be related to how Office is handling the external display. Microsoft’s external-monitor troubleshooting guidance suggests restarting the app or signing out and back in where appropriate.

Change slideshow settings one at a time
PowerPoint for Windows documents slideshow resolution and hardware graphics acceleration settings. If the display checks do not resolve the problem, adjust one setting at a time and compare the result, so you can tell which change helped. Microsoft’s presentation performance guidance covers these options. These directions are Windows-oriented; do not assume the same controls exist in PowerPoint for Mac or PowerPoint for the web.
Test on the equipment you will use
Before presenting, run the slideshow on the actual computer, monitor, or projector you will use. A mismatch between computer and projector resolution can cause display problems, including cropping. Microsoft recommends checking the equipment and resolution in its presentation delivery guidance.

Know which controls apply to your version
The image-compression and resolution controls described above are desktop PowerPoint features; Microsoft says these features are not available in Microsoft 365 for the web. Exact labels and locations may differ by version and platform. High fidelity guidance applies to Office 2016 and later, and Microsoft lists PowerPoint 2016 and newer as already using it by default. If the problem is display-only, prioritize the screen and slideshow checks rather than changing image quality settings.
