For U.S. buyers, the best choice depends less on a single headline range or charging number than on the exact trim, your routes, home-charging setup and ownership costs. The 2025 Hyundai IONIQ 6 SE Long Range RWD is rated for up to 342 miles, while Tesla lists up to 363 miles for the current Model 3 Premium RWD. Those manufacturer estimates are not directly comparable to every trim—or a promise of real-world range.
How the range compares by trim
Range varies substantially within each lineup, so compare the configuration you would actually buy. Hyundai’s official U.S. page covers the 2025 IONIQ 6; Tesla’s live page lists current Model 3 configurations. The figures below are manufacturer/EPA estimates, not independent head-to-head test results.

For daily use, a higher EPA-estimated range can mean fewer charging stops, but it does not tell you how far you will drive in every condition. Speed, weather, elevation, temperature and vehicle configuration affect usable range. Plan longer trips around conservative estimates and actual charging locations rather than treating the rating as a guaranteed distance.

Charging: why the headline figures do not settle the comparison
Hyundai estimates that the 2025 IONIQ 6 can charge from 10% to 80% in about 18 minutes when connected to a 350-kW, 800V DC ultra-fast charger. Tesla lists up to 185 miles added in 15 minutes for one Model 3 configuration and up to 195 miles for another. Tesla’s footnote bases its added-range figures on constant-speed driving data at 65 mph. These are different measures and test conditions, so the numbers cannot be ranked as if they were the same charging test.
Neither peak power nor miles added in a short window reveals the entire road-trip experience. Charge time depends on the charging curve, starting battery level, battery temperature, station capability and route spacing. Station availability and the time needed to reach, use and leave a charger also matter. Hyundai cautions that actual time varies with charge level, charger output, vehicle and battery settings, battery and outside temperature. Tesla likewise notes that charging and driving performance can vary with Supercharger type, configuration, charge level, temperature, speed, weather and elevation.
What to check for your routes
- Map the chargers you would actually use on frequent long-distance routes, including alternatives if a station is busy or unavailable.
- Compare connector compatibility and charging access for the specific model year and vehicle; confirm access arrangements for the stations you expect to use.
- Think about your typical stop pattern and whether the car’s charging curve and route spacing work for it, not just the advertised peak or short-session figure.
- For home charging, check household electrical capacity and get an installation assessment. The cited manufacturer specifications do not establish which third-party charger or installation is suitable for a particular property.
New-car prices: align trims and fees before comparing
The displayed starting prices are not on the same fee basis, and the lineups are not equivalent. Hyundai’s 2025 IONIQ 6 page lists MSRP of $37,850 for SE Standard Range RWD, $42,800 for SE, $45,600 for SEL and $51,100 for Limited; those prices exclude freight, tax, title, license and optional equipment. Tesla’s current page lists Model 3 Premium from $44,130 and Performance from $56,630, including destination and order fees but excluding tax and other fees. Both sets of prices can change, and the model years differ.

Do not treat a starting price as the amount you will pay.

Five-year ownership estimates: useful model, not a personal quote
Edmunds displays five-year True Cost to Own estimates of $48,798 for the 2025 Hyundai IONIQ 6 SE Standard Range and $48,544 for the 2026 Tesla Model 3 Standard. Its displayed estimated cost per mile is $0.65 for each. The estimates break out depreciation, financing, taxes and fees, fuel, insurance, maintenance and repairs. Edmunds says its model assumes five years and 15,000 miles per year and excludes federal EV tax credits.
Source: Edmunds’ comparison and Edmunds’ cost-to-own methodology and example, accessed October 2026. These are modeled estimates for selected vehicles, not quotes or audited predictions. The small difference between the displayed totals is not a universal cost winner: actual purchase price, financing, insurance, energy use, incentives and resale can change the outcome.
Build a comparison for your situation
- Use current purchase quotes for the precise trims and options, and compare the total amount financed rather than only the advertised starting price.
- Get insurance quotes for each exact vehicle in your ZIP code; rates depend on driver and location.
- Use your own annual mileage and the expected mix of home and public charging. Apply your utility’s electricity tariff, including time-of-use rates if relevant, and account for public charging prices you expect to pay.
- Enter the loan terms and any local incentives for which you may qualify. Eligibility and amounts depend on circumstances and can change.
- Choose a resale horizon and treat future resale value as an estimate, not a known figure.
Warranty coverage to compare
Hyundai states that the IONIQ 6 high-voltage battery is covered for defects for 10 years or 100,000 miles and advertises a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty. Tesla lists four years or 50,000 miles of basic coverage and eight years of battery and drive-unit coverage, with mileage limits that depend on configuration. Coverage details, exclusions and terms matter alongside the headline duration; review the warranty booklet for the specific vehicle before purchase.

Which one fits your buying priorities?
- Consider the 2025 IONIQ 6 if one of its specific range, trim and price combinations fits your needs, and its charging opportunities suit your routes. Its official range and charging figures vary by configuration.
- Consider the current Model 3 if the Premium RWD’s listed range or the configuration and charging access you need fit your use. Tesla’s short-session added-range figure uses a different basis from Hyundai’s 10%–80% estimate.
- Let ownership logistics decide a close call. Compare home installation feasibility, local electricity costs, charging access, insurance quotes, financing and your likely mileage instead of choosing from an advertised peak number or one modeled total.
