A blurry PS5 picture and a flickering or dropping signal are different problems. Start by checking the resolution the console is sending, then simplify the HDMI connection. Adjust refresh-rate features or PSSR only when the symptoms point to them: PSSR is limited to supported games on PS5 Pro, not a universal sharpness control.
First identify what is wrong
Note whether the picture is consistently soft, the output resolution is lower than expected, the screen flickers, the signal disappears, or the image is cropped. These symptoms point to different checks. Softness in one game can be game-specific; flicker or a blank screen can involve the signal path or display compatibility.

Check the PS5’s output resolution
- On the PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Review Current Video Output Signal and the connected HDMI device information, including resolution, VRR and HDR.
- Check Resolution. With Automatic, the PS5 selects the highest resolution it detects as supported by the TV. For a compatible 4K display, 4K output is 2160p; you can select 2160p under Resolution.
The signal reaching the screen depends on the full setup, not just the console: the display and any receiver or other device between it and the PS5 also matter. Sony’s PS5 resolution and video output guidance explains the available settings and compatibility requirements.
If the image flickers, try a lower Video Transfer Rate
For flicker, go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Video Transfer Rate and try -1; if needed, try -2. Sony says limiting the 4K output signal this way may improve picture stability. It can also limit high-bandwidth output, including 4K/120 Hz and selected 4K 50/60 Hz color formats, so use it as a stability trade-off rather than a general image-sharpness setting.

Rule out the HDMI connection and display
- Check that the HDMI cable is firmly connected at both the PS5 and the display.
- Try another HDMI port on the display, then test another cable if one is available.
- Connect the PS5 directly to the display, temporarily bypassing a receiver, soundbar or capture device.
- Check the display manual for any setting needed to accept high-resolution signals, and install current display firmware.
Sony recommends the cable included with the PS5 for its high-performance features. For 4K/120 Hz, use the included cable or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for that output. Replace a cable only if the current one is faulty or unsuitable; a new cable will not fix softness caused by a particular game or an unsupported display resolution. See Sony’s 4K and 120 Hz guidance and picture and sound troubleshooting steps.
If there is no image at all, Sony’s troubleshooting instructions include turning off the display and console, unplugging their power cables, waiting 20 minutes, reconnecting, and checking again. This is a step for no-image conditions, not a guaranteed fix for blur or flicker. For persistent output problems, contact PlayStation Repairs.

Test VRR and 120 Hz only if they match the symptom
VRR adjusts refresh rate in real time, but requires support from both the display and the game, and results vary by TV. If video output problems occur with 120 Hz games on a monitor or another display, turn off 120 Hz Output in Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. If enabling Apply to Unsupported Games causes unexpected behavior, turn that option off. Change one setting at a time and check whether the symptom changes before trying another.

Use PSSR only on a compatible PS5 Pro game
PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is not available on every PS5 and is not a system-wide blur fix. Sony lists Enhance PSSR Image Quality for consoles in the CFI-7000 model group and certain PSSR-compatible games. It is on by default and may improve image quality in those games.

On a compatible console, find it at Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Enhance PSSR Image Quality. Turn it off if gameplay behaves unexpectedly. If a supported game still looks soft, first check the console’s output signal and whether the display supports the resolution you expect; PSSR cannot make every game render identically.
For PS4 games played on PS5 Pro
Sony has a separate option for this case: Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games. Enable it to improve image quality in PS4 games on PS5 Pro, and check that the display supports 2160p/60 Hz or 1440p/60 Hz output. Turn the option off if gameplay behaves unexpectedly. This is distinct from PSSR’s enhancement setting. See Sony’s PS5 Pro guidance for PS4 game image quality.

That is a display-area issue rather than ordinary blur. Open Settings > Screen and Video > Screen > Adjust Display Area and adjust the picture to fit the screen.

Match the next step to the symptom
| What you see | First check | What the result tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Soft picture or unexpectedly low resolution | Review Current Video Output Signal and Resolution; confirm the display supports the desired output. | If the console is sending the expected resolution, the softness may be specific to the game rather than a signal-resolution problem. |
| Flicker | Try Video Transfer Rate -1 or -2, then check the HDMI cable, port and any intermediary device. | If a lower transfer rate helps, stability may depend on the available signal bandwidth or HDMI path. |
| Signal drops out | Connect directly to the display and test another port or cable; review 120 Hz or VRR settings if the issue occurs with those features. | Changing one connection or setting at a time helps isolate where the problem lies. |
| Cropped picture or black borders | Use Adjust Display Area. | This changes the displayed area, not resolution or upscaling. |
