Sometimes—but “jailbroken” can mean two very different things. If the first-generation Echo Spot is rooted but still runs its original Fire OS, Alexa may remain installed; the available evidence does not guarantee that Alexa, Amazon services, or Amazon updates will work reliably on a modified build. If Fire OS has been replaced with LineageOS or Linux firmware, do not expect the original Alexa or Amazon services unless they have been confirmed on that exact build. One documented Linux project explicitly says it has no Fire OS and no Alexa.
First identify what “jailbroken” means
This question concerns the first-generation Echo Spot, released in 2017, not the Echo Spot (2024 Release). The first-generation model is also identified by the codename rook in developer material. Rooting stock software, installing an Android-based replacement, and installing Linux firmware are separate configurations; they do not have the same implications for Alexa or updates.

| Configuration | What it means for Alexa and Amazon services | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| Rooted stock Fire OS | Alexa might remain because the original system is still present. Reliable operation of Alexa, other Amazon services, and OTA updates on a modified build is not established. | A developer discussion documents a rooted stock setup and an unlock/recovery method. It does not guarantee service or update behavior. |
| LineageOS or another replacement system | Treat original Alexa and Amazon services as unavailable unless the specific service is demonstrated on the exact build. | Android Authority reported on 30 September 2026 that a first-generation Spot had been rooted and loaded with LineageOS, with a custom circular-screen interface connected to an AI agent on a PC. That report is not evidence that Alexa or Amazon services work on it. |
| TECHO5 Spot Linux firmware | The project describes its firmware as having no Fire OS and no Alexa; its use case instead involves Home Assistant. | Its software and update process are community-project matters, separate from Amazon device updates. |
What Amazon says about updates and Alexa
Software updates
Amazon’s Alexa Device Software Versions help page says Alexa-enabled devices receive software updates automatically when connected to the internet, and lists both “Echo Spot” and “Echo Spot (2024 Release).” This is general guidance for Alexa-enabled devices, not a promise that Amazon updates install on rooted stock Fire OS, preserve root, or work at all on replacement firmware. It does not settle the modified-device question.
Alexa and Alexa+
Amazon’s UK Alexa+ compatibility page lists “Echo Spot (1st Generation)” as incompatible with Alexa+. It says that listed devices on an account with Alexa+ continue with the original Alexa experience. That describes Amazon’s supported experience on those devices; it does not show that original Alexa works after Fire OS has been removed. The page also says feature and service rollout across compatible devices takes place during Early Access.

Security-support dates
Amazon’s UK Echo security-update policy lists the Echo Spot (2024 Release) through 31 December 2030. That date applies to the 2024 model, not the 2017 first-generation Spot. The policy does not give a support-through date for the first-generation Spot, and Amazon notes that an update period is not a guarantee of how long a device will last.
What is not guaranteed after modification
A developer post about unlocking the first-generation Spot and using TWRP says its method depends on supported Fire OS versions. The post is historical: at the time, the developer said no custom ROMs were available and that LineageOS 12.1 had booted but was not stable enough for release. More recent reporting documents replacement-system projects, but it does not establish that Alexa’s cloud client or other Amazon services continue to work on them.

- Rooted stock Fire OS: no guarantee establishes whether Amazon OTA updates reliably install, remove root, or affect recovery on a particular modified build.
- Replacement firmware: no cited report establishes that Amazon services can be restored on a particular LineageOS build. The TECHO5 Spot project explicitly says it has no Alexa.
- Recovery: the unlock project links to recovery and unbrick material, but that is not a validated guarantee that a specific device can be recovered safely.
How to check your own Spot before relying on a service
- Confirm the generation. Check whether the device is the first-generation 2017 Spot or the Echo Spot (2024 Release); instructions and compatibility claims are model-specific.
- Identify the installed system. Establish whether it still runs stock Fire OS with root, or whether Fire OS has been replaced by LineageOS, Linux, or another build.
- Check the exact build and service. Do not infer that Alexa, a particular Amazon service, or OTA updates work just because the device starts or connects to Wi-Fi. Confirm the behavior on that precise model and build.
- Use maintainer instructions for modification or recovery. Follow current, device-specific instructions rather than improvising unlock, update, or unbrick steps; the existence of a recovery guide does not guarantee recovery.
