If PSSR makes fine details look blurry, shimmer, or flicker, first check that the game and PS5 Pro system software are current. Then compare Sony’s optional Enhance PSSR Image Quality setting in the same game scene; turn it off if it causes unexpected visual effects. PSSR and this setting are for PS5 Pro, not the standard PS5.
What PSSR can—and cannot—explain
PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is an AI upscaling technology. Sony describes it as “an AI library that analyzes each frame pixel by pixel as it upscales game visuals.” Its upgraded version is intended to improve reconstruction precision, motion stability, and fine-detail clarity, but the outcome depends on the game.

A soft image, flickering edges, shimmer around moving objects, or unstable fine details do not by themselves prove PSSR is at fault. A game’s graphics mode and other rendering choices may affect what you see. Sony says results from the enhanced setting vary by title; it does not provide one universal fix for every blurry or shimmering image. Sony’s March 16, 2026 announcement explains the upgrade and rollout.
1. Confirm the console, game, and symptom
- Make sure you are using a PS5 Pro. PSSR and the documented enhanced-image-quality option discussed here are PS5 Pro features.
- Note the affected game and its current graphics mode. Describe what you see specifically: blurry fine details, shimmer, flicker, or an afterimage-like effect.
- Check whether the issue appears only in one game or mode, or across multiple games. That distinction helps separate a title-specific image issue from a broader display problem.
2. Check for game support and system updates
The upgraded PSSR behavior is delivered through PS5 system software and applies to supported PS5 Pro games. A game does not necessarily use the upgrade simply because it uses PSSR. Check Sony’s current supported-game information and the game’s official update notes, since support can change over time.
#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
- On the PS5 Pro, open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings, then check for an update and install one if available.
- Check whether the affected game is listed as supporting the upgraded PSSR, and install any available game update.
- Reopen the same game and graphics mode, then inspect the same scene. Avoid changing several settings at once, so you can tell what affected the image.
Sony’s rollout announcement describes the system software update and supported-game context: Upgraded PSSR rollout.
3. Compare “Enhance PSSR Image Quality”
On PS5 Pro, try the optional Enhance PSSR Image Quality setting for a supported title. Sony says it can improve image stability, including for titles designed around the original PSSR, but cautions that results vary by game. It is not a guaranteed sharpness boost in every scene.
- Open Settings > Screen and Video and locate Enhance PSSR Image Quality. If the option is unavailable, the title may not support it.
- View a repeatable scene with fine details or motion. Compare it with the setting enabled and disabled, keeping the game, graphics mode, and scene the same.
- If enabling it introduces unexpected visual effects, switch it off. Sony says, “If it results in any unexpected visual effects, you can turn it off at any time.”
PlayStation’s PS5 Pro page describes the optional setting and notes that results vary by title. Any improvement should be judged in the game you play, rather than assumed from the feature’s name.
4. Test the TV and HDMI path for broader picture problems
Try display-path checks if the problem also appears outside one PSSR game or resembles a general loss of picture or signal. These checks can help identify a connection or display issue; Sony’s guidance does not establish HDMI hardware as a cause or cure for PSSR reconstruction shimmer.

- Connect the PS5 Pro directly to the TV or display for a test, removing an audio/video receiver or other intermediary equipment.
- Confirm that the TV is set to the HDMI input connected to the console.
- Check the TV or display for available software or firmware updates.
- Try another HDMI port or test with a known-good HDMI cable. Treat this as a general signal-path check, not a PSSR-specific fix.
- To view or change the console’s output resolution, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
These steps come from PlayStation Support’s general PS5 picture and sound troubleshooting.
5. If the image remains blurry or unstable
If the artifact persists only in one game or graphics mode after the checks above, compare that game’s available modes and review its current official patch notes or support page. A title-specific rendering issue may require a game update; changing cables or resetting the console is not an established universal remedy for PSSR artifacts.
If the issue affects multiple games or the console’s overall picture, contact PlayStation Support. For a problem isolated to one title, contact that game’s official support. Sony and the game-specific evidence cited here do not establish a single fix that applies to every case.
