Can Renewable Energy Make AI Data Centres More Sustainable?

Renewable power can lower AI data-centre emissions, but a PPA is not proof of clean electricity at every hour. See how grid supply, storage and efficiency affect the result.

Yes—renewable electricity can reduce the emissions associated with powering AI data centres, but it does not automatically make them sustainable. The result depends on the electricity available to a facility when it runs, whether procurement helps bring new clean power onto the grid, and whether the grid can deliver that power reliably. Efficiency matters too: clean supply does not make wasted electricity useful.

Why the question matters now

Data-centre electricity use is growing quickly. The International Energy Agency’s 2026 update says global data-centre electricity demand rose 17% in 2025, while electricity consumption from AI-focused data centres rose 50% that year. Its central projection puts total data-centre demand at about 485 TWh in 2025 and 950 TWh in 2030, with AI-focused demand expected to triple over that period.

Those are global demand figures and projections, not estimates of the electricity used by an individual AI query or a particular facility. They do show why the source of power matters: as computing demand expands, its emissions depend in part on what generation supplies that added load.

Renewable contracts are not the same as renewable electricity at the site

A data centre generally draws electricity from its local power system. That system’s physical supply mix is different from the mix an operator claims through contracts or certificates. In the IEA’s estimate, renewables supplied about 27% of the electricity physically consumed by data centres globally in 2024.

Separately, the IEA reports that data-centre operators signed more than 40 TWh of renewable power purchase agreements (PPAs) in 2025. A PPA can provide revenue certainty for a wind, solar or other low-emissions project, helping support its development. But annual contract volume does not show that a particular facility received renewable electricity in every hour: the contracted generator may be in another location or produce power at different times from the data centre’s demand.

For that reason, a claim that a facility “runs on 100% renewable energy” is hard to assess without knowing its geographic boundary, time-matching approach and accounting method. Nuclear power can also provide low-emissions electricity, but it is not renewable and should not be folded into a renewable-energy claim.

How the main approaches affect sustainability

Approach What it can do What to check
Renewable PPA or other procurement Contract for clean generation and potentially help finance new projects. Where and when the generation is available; whether it supports additional supply; and how the operator accounts for it.
Onsite generation Supply some electricity directly at or near the facility. How much of the load it can serve and what supplies the facility when onsite generation is unavailable.
Storage Shift electricity across time and help manage variable generation or rapid changes in AI loads. Whether it is actually deployed and how it contributes to the facility’s reliability and grid needs.
Grid and transmission expansion Connect new generation and deliver electricity to areas with growing demand. Whether connection and transmission capacity will be available on the data centre’s construction timeline.
Efficiency and flexible computing Reduce the electricity required for a computing service, or adjust some demand when grid conditions allow. Whether the changes preserve the service the workload needs and can be implemented economically.

Renewables need a grid that can deliver them

Even when clean generation exists, it may not be available where and when a data centre needs power. New transmission and grid connections can take years, and a large facility can add concentrated demand to a constrained area. The IEA’s 2025 report estimated that around 20% of planned data-centre projects could face delays unless grid risks are addressed.

Storage, flexible computing and onsite assets can help integrate variable renewable output and changing AI loads, but they are options rather than evidence that every facility uses them. Flexibility also has practical limits: curtailing AI operations can be expensive. Siting facilities where power and grid capacity are stronger, alongside investment in connections and transmission, can help address the mismatch.

In its 2025 base case, the IEA projected renewables would meet nearly half of additional data-centre electricity demand through 2030, while fossil fuels would also supply a substantial share of near-term growth. Its executive summary described this scenario: “Half of the global growth in data centre demand is met by renewables, supported by storage and the broader electricity grid.” This is a forecast for a global scenario, not a guarantee about the power mix at any particular facility.

Efficiency changes how much clean power is needed

Adding renewable generation is not the only way to limit electricity-related emissions. Using less electricity for the same computing service can reduce the amount of new supply a data centre needs. The IEA’s 2025 analysis models materially lower data-centre demand in its high-efficiency case, underscoring the role of efficient hardware, cooling, software and workloads alongside clean electricity.

Efficiency does not substitute for clean supply when demand grows, and renewable procurement does not remove the value of avoiding unnecessary demand. The two measures address different parts of the problem: one reduces the electricity required, while the other changes the emissions intensity of the electricity supplied.

What the emissions projections do—and do not—say

IEA projections for data-centre emissions depend on the report vintage and scenario. The figures below are estimates, not measured future outcomes, and should not be treated as a directly comparable revision without checking the underlying assumptions and methods.

2026 update About 350 Mt in 2035 A scenario estimate in the 2026 update; not a measured result.

How to judge a data centre’s renewable-energy claim

  • Ask what is being measured. Is the claim about electricity physically supplied to the site, or about contractual procurement?
  • Check place and time. Does the clean generation serve the same grid area, and is it available during the facility’s consumption hours?
  • Look for additional supply. Does the arrangement support new generation, rather than only accounting for existing output?
  • Check delivery and reliability. Are grid connections, transmission, storage or other operating measures in place to serve the load reliably?
  • Include demand reduction. Does the account explain how efficient hardware, cooling, software or workloads limit electricity use?

A credible account should explain its boundary and method rather than relying on a renewable contract total alone. That makes it possible to distinguish a contribution to clean-energy development from evidence about the electricity a specific data centre actually consumed.
