Turn QSSR off in the affected game and compare the same scene with the same camera movement. If the blur or shimmer goes away and returns when QSSR is re-enabled, the symptom is likely tied to that game’s QSSR rendering path; this is a diagnostic check, not a confirmed Sony fix. If it persists with QSSR off, appears in other games, or involves screen flicker or signal loss, troubleshoot the display connection instead.
First, check whether QSSR is causing the change
- Compare the same scene with QSSR off and on. Open the game’s graphics options, disable QSSR, then revisit the same location. Keep the camera position, movement, and display output as consistent as possible. If the game offers other graphics modes, compare those too.
- Look for a pattern. Check whether the effect appears only in one game or graphics mode, or mainly during camera movement and around moving foliage, fine detail, or high-contrast edges. Also check the PS5 home screen and another game.
- Note what changed. Record the game version and PS5 model, and whether disabling QSSR changes the symptom. This helps distinguish a game-specific rendering issue from a broader display or signal problem.
Sony describes QSSR as an optional graphics mode provided within supported games. It announced the feature on October 1, 2026, with Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games adding it. Sony says QSSR is intended to improve detail and image stability, but its announcement gives no numeric image-quality benchmark and identifies no specific blur-or-shimmer fix. Sony’s QSSR announcement also says the feature will be offered broadly to PlayStation developers, so availability can depend on the game and its updates.

Make sure you are changing the right setting
QSSR is selected in a supported game’s graphics options. It is not the same as the system-level “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” option. Sony documents that PSSR control for certain compatible games on PS5 Pro consoles in the CFI-7000 model group; its path is Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. It is not the documented QSSR switch for standard PS5 consoles. See PlayStation’s resolution and video-output guide.

Check for a game update
Sony said the first QSSR games were being patched to add the mode. That announcement does not identify a blur-or-shimmer defect or promise a corrective patch. Check the affected game’s current patch notes or official support channel for information specific to its version; do not assume an update will fix the symptom.
If the problem remains with QSSR off, troubleshoot the display path
When the symptom occurs across unrelated content, persists after disabling QSSR, or includes actual flicker or signal loss, check the video connection and display. These are general picture and signal checks, not established QSSR rendering fixes. PlayStation’s PS5 troubleshooting guidance covers picture and sound issues.

- Connect the PS5 directly to the TV or monitor, temporarily removing a receiver, capture device, switch, or other intermediary.
- Confirm the display is on the correct input, and check for available display firmware updates.
- Try another HDMI cable or display port to see whether the symptom changes.
For flicker with 4K output, test Video Transfer Rate
If the problem is screen flicker while outputting 4K, Sony recommends testing a lower video transfer rate. Go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Video Transfer Rate and try -1; if needed, test -2. This limits some supported output formats and may reduce access to high-bandwidth modes such as 4K/120 Hz. It is a signal troubleshooting step, not a known way to correct QSSR blur or shimmer.

- The display make and model, output resolution, and refresh rate.
- The scene and movement that reveal the blur or shimmer.
- Whether QSSR off removes the symptom and whether it returns when enabled.
- A short capture or clear description, if available.

Keep the scene, camera movement, and display output constant so the graphics mode is the main variable. Compare fine-detail clarity, stability during camera movement, shimmer or aliasing around foliage and sharp edges, and performance or frame-rate behavior. Sony’s public description emphasizes intended detail and temporal stability, but does not publish measured mode-by-mode results; what looks best can depend on the game, scene, and display.
