A factory task is ready for humanoid robot automation only when a specific robot configuration can perform that specific job safely, reliably, and economically in its real workcell. A convincing demo or a robot’s general capabilities are not enough. Define the task, set acceptance criteria before testing, assess the integrated safety and production system, and run a representative pilot against the current process and viable alternatives.
Start with the task, not the robot
Readiness belongs to an operation in a defined workcell, with a particular robot, end effector, software configuration, tooling, and operating context. It does not attach to “humanoids” as a category. A general benchmark or demonstration cannot establish that a robot will handle your parts, shifts, exceptions, and human activity.

Write down the operation’s start and end states, part variants, expected cycle or takt time, shift pattern, changeovers, spatial constraints, and where people enter the work area. Describe normal operation as well as foreseeable variations and exceptions. Also state why automation is being considered—such as ergonomics, labor availability, quality, throughput, or flexibility—and make the intended improvement measurable.
NIST’s performance-assessment framework emphasizes decomposing a task and deriving requirements from it, rather than inferring system readiness from disconnected component claims: NIST’s framework for autonomous assembly assessment.

Translate the work into testable capabilities
For each task step, specify what the system must detect, manipulate, move around, interact with, and do when the process deviates. These are requirements to verify, not assumptions about what a humanoid can already do.
- Perception: Identify and locate parts, people, fixtures, and machine states under the cell’s actual lighting, clutter, and occlusion.
- Mobility and reach: Reach all required work areas; if the robot is mobile, traverse the real floor and thresholds without obstructing people or material flow.
- Manipulation: Grasp, orient, and place the actual parts with the required force and precision, including expected variation, and verify task completion.
- Tool use and process interaction: Operate required tools, machine controls, doors, handles, buttons, or connectors. Test whether a dedicated fixture would make the operation more dependable.
- State changes and recovery: Respond to failed picks, misfeeds, jams, part variation, and machine interruptions, and define a safe human fallback.
- Integration: Verify interfaces with machines, PLCs or production systems, safety functions, networks, work instructions, and maintenance workflows.
NIST identifies perception, mobility, dexterity, and safety as component areas for assessment. Fraunhofer IPA’s Humanoid Capabilities Navigator instead groups capabilities into mobility, manipulation, cognition, and safety/security, and classifies robots and applications across five maturity levels. Neither framework removes the need to derive measures from the task itself. NIST performance assessment; Fraunhofer IPA Humanoid Capabilities Navigator.
Screen task fit and compare alternatives
A bounded, repeated operation with stable inputs and a clear success condition is generally easier to specify and evaluate than work with many unstructured variants. Treat that as a screening heuristic, not a guarantee. Fraunhofer IPA’s 2026 hardware value-chain paper says current humanoid systems do not provide unrestricted autonomy across heterogeneous industrial environments. It identifies material transport, machine loading, and grasping complex objects as possible early application areas—not as universally suitable tasks. Ask whether a humanoid’s form solves a real constraint in the workcell. Compare it with a fixed industrial arm, collaborative robot, mobile manipulator, purpose-built fixture, or process redesign using the same task requirements and acceptance criteria. Safety measures can affect cycle time, flexibility, and investment decisions, so include their operational effects in the comparison. Fraunhofer IPA on human-robot collaboration.
Make safety and integration a go/no-go review
Complete a risk assessment for the defined application before workers are exposed to the system. Assess the integrated setup—not just the robot—including its hands or gripper, carried tools, parts, workpieces, fixtures, protective measures, human locations and behavior, foreseeable contact, and abnormal or fault conditions. NIST’s task-based human-robot collaboration material describes early, offline risk assessment and considers tooling, the nature and duration of expected contacts, and how forces can be transferred to an operator. OSHA’s robotics page, accessed October 3, 2026, says there are no specific OSHA standards for the robotics industry and points to relevant consensus standards and task-based assessment material. That statement does not remove workplace safety duties; applicable obligations depend on jurisdiction and application. OSHA robotics standards and guidance.

Set acceptance limits before the pilot, based on the task’s production and safety requirements. Choose relevant measures from this list:
- Good parts or completed cycles per scheduled hour, including pauses and recovery.
- First-pass success and quality acceptance rate.
- Cycle-time distribution, not just the best demonstration time.
- Recovery success for each specified fault or exception.
- Human interventions, stoppages, and time to restore production.
- Availability and maintenance needs over representative operating periods.
- Safety-test results and validated responses to foreseeable faults.
- Energy use and the operational effect of charging or battery swaps, where relevant.
- Changeover time and effort across required part variants.
These are task-level measures to select and define locally, not universal industry pass thresholds. NIST’s work supports combining task-derived component measures into system-level assessments, while Fraunhofer IPA’s benchmark illustrates modular testing of application-relevant attributes. Interpret results in context
Fraunhofer IPA’s benchmark release of May 27, 2026, describes six assessment areas: technologies and basic capabilities; complex capabilities; cleanroom suitability; functional safety; cybersecurity; and energy efficiency. It uses standards where possible and reports measures such as walking speed, grasp force, payload, obstacle performance, collision behavior, failure behavior, cybersecurity modules, battery duration, and power draw. This can help identify what evidence an application needs; it is not a universal certification that a robot is ready for any task. Fraunhofer IPA benchmark overview.

One published example shows why configuration matters. Fraunhofer IPA tested a Unitree G1 EDU-4 with Dex3-1 three-finger hands, delivered in May 2025, on firmware 1.04. Its release reported collision forces above 500 N, a Bluetooth vulnerability in the tested software that had since been fixed, and maximum battery durations of 2 hours 49 minutes while standing and 1 hour 49 minutes in a standing-and-walking scenario. Those are results for that tested configuration and setup, not current specifications for every G1, software version, or humanoid robot. Fraunhofer IPA’s report and test-specific results.
Report observed performance alongside run-to-run variation, unresolved failure modes, and the conditions under which the result holds. A strong score in one dimension does not compensate automatically for a failure in another: task performance, safety, energy, and security each need evidence relevant to the intended operation.
Make a decision against predeclared criteria
Compare pilot results with the acceptance limits, the current process, and feasible automation alternatives. Include integration and safety engineering, tooling, facility changes, operator support, charging, maintenance, training, and downtime in the operational and lifecycle-cost case. The available frameworks do not set a universal ROI, uptime, or cycle-time figure that makes every factory task ready; derive thresholds from the site’s baseline and requirements.

Choose among four practical outcomes:
- Proceed: Move to a limited production deployment when the tested configuration meets the defined safety and performance requirements.
- Revise and retest: Change the task, tooling, fixture, or workcell when a remediable gap is clear.
- Choose another approach: Use a different automation option or process redesign when it fits the requirements better.
- Defer: Hold deployment while a material capability, safety, reliability, or cost requirement remains unmet.
Keep the human fallback and production recovery plan in place while evidence is limited.
