Clean the camera lenses, remove anything covering or magnetically attached near them, and tap the subject you want sharp. For close-ups, step back or use 0.5× if your iPhone supports it; in dim light, hold the phone steady. If blur persists after these checks, restart and update iOS, test each camera, then arrange service if needed.
Start with the kind of blur you’re seeing
Blur does not always mean the camera has missed focus. The wrong object may be sharp, a close subject may be beyond the lens’s focusing range, or movement in low light may leave the image smeared. Use the symptom to choose the first fix.

Clean the lenses and remove anything in the way
Use a clean microfiber cloth on the front and rear camera lenses. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance says: “If the photo is blurry, clean the front and back camera lenses with a microfiber cloth.” Apple Support’s camera troubleshooting guide also recommends removing cases, films, or accessories that could block the camera or flash, and removing accessories or magnets placed near the camera. Take a test photo after cleaning and removing them.

Tap the subject you want in focus
iPhone automatically sets focus and exposure, but you can move the focus area by tapping the intended subject in the viewfinder. If the camera keeps changing focus or exposure, touch and hold the subject until AE/AF Lock appears. Tap elsewhere to unlock it. More details are in Apple’s Camera tools guide.
Manual focus-distance control is documented for iPhone 18 Pro models; it is not a general control available on every iPhone. On other models, use the tap-to-focus and AE/AF Lock controls that appear in Camera.

For close-ups, step back or switch to 0.5×
On supported iPhones, Camera can switch to the Ultra Wide camera for macro photography, which can capture subjects as close as 2 cm. At very close range, the image may look blurry if the camera cannot focus as expected. Move the phone back slightly; if your model offers it, tap 0.5× to switch to Ultra Wide. The exact macro controls vary by model. See Apple’s macro photography guide.

In low light, keep the iPhone steady
When a photo is taken in dim light, movement can make it look smeared even when the intended subject was selected for focus. Apple advises holding the phone steady for best results with Night mode. This is a practical way to reduce movement blur; it does not by itself establish that the camera is out of focus. Apple explains Night mode in its iPhone photo guide.

If the camera still looks blurry
- Restart the iPhone. Then take a test photo.
- Install the latest iOS update available for your iPhone. After updating, test the camera again.
- Test the front and rear cameras separately. This helps identify whether the problem appears with one camera or both; it does not identify a failed part.
- Contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider if the camera still does not work properly after these checks. Apple says camera service may be needed when troubleshooting does not restore normal function. Its guidance describes professional repair with genuine Apple camera parts as the safest and most reliable option for most customers; service choices vary by location. Blur alone does not establish which component, if any, has failed. Avoid treating a particular part as the diagnosis until the camera has been assessed.
