1. Choose a model that fits your change policy
The Jev Models documentation describes jev-1.13 as a pinned build and jev-latest as a rolling alias. Their documented difference is whether the build behind the model ID can change; the page says they share context window, price, and request shape. The model field is optional, and omitting it selects jev-1.13, according to the Jev Models documentation.

Record the response’s model_version, particularly when using jev-latest, so you can investigate behavior changes against the build that handled each request.
2. Keep state to the evidence the decision needs
Start with the smallest state that contains the facts needed to answer the question. Add only relevant policy text, definitions, and supporting history. If a record is large, filter or retrieve the pertinent passages instead of sending the entire history “just in case.” When you include retrieved material, identify its passage and source so its origin remains visible.

The Jev Manual’s state guidance puts the distinction plainly: “State is the material Jev evaluates. Keep facts in state and judgments in questions.” The manual identifies itself as independently maintained and marked Official Checked 2026-09-21 for Jev 1.13.0. See its Jev State Guide.
3. Pick a state shape that makes evidence inspectable
Choose a representation that lets a reviewer and the model identify what each piece of evidence means. The formats described in the Jev State Guide suit different evidence shapes:

Descriptive fields make it easier to refer to the right evidence in a question. They do not make irrelevant fields useful, and they do not guarantee that Jev will follow a hierarchy embedded in the data.
4. Separate evidence, requested judgment, and trusted instructions
Put source material and facts in state; put the decision you want Jev to make in the question. State the allowed outcomes and decision criteria clearly in trusted instructions or application-controlled criteria. Keep user-supplied text inside state rather than concatenating it into those instructions.

This separation improves clarity, but it is not a security boundary. A classifier’s output should not be treated as proof that untrusted text was harmless or that the model reliably followed an instruction hierarchy. The Jev Manual’s guidance supports structural separation, not a guarantee of prompt-injection prevention.
5. Preserve provenance, dates, units, and uncertainty
Make it possible to distinguish what a user claims from what your system has verified. Preserve dates, units, identifiers, and source attribution as they appear in the underlying record. If a necessary field is absent, mark it as missing or ask for clarification rather than filling it in by inference. Include enough evidence to support the particular judgment requested, but do not blend unrelated periods or conflicting records into an apparently settled fact.

6. Check the documented request limits
The Jev Models listing accessed 2026-10-04 specifies the following limits. These are documentation figures, not performance or safety measures; check the active model and API documentation before relying on them in a deployment.

These ceilings do not mean a request should approach them. Focused state is easier to inspect and troubleshoot than a maximum-sized payload.

7. Test inputs designed to reveal context problems
The Jev State Guide explicitly recommends testing contradictory, empty, and very long input. Include those cases in evaluation, along with checks for whether unrelated history changes the answer.
- Contradictory evidence: Verify that dates, sources, and conflicts remain visible rather than being silently collapsed.
- Empty or missing fields: Check that the result does not invent facts or treat absence as confirmation.
- Very long input: Confirm that the required evidence survives filtering and that the request stays within active limits.
- Irrelevant history: Compare the decision with and without unrelated material. If it changes, inspect for mixed periods, conflicting facts, or incompatible instructions.
8. Keep action authority in application code
The API guide at jevtypesafe.org shows examples for a hosted API, including prompt-injection guard and agent risk-check endpoints. Examples of these routes are not a certification that model judgments alone make actions safe. Keep consequential action control in the application: restrict which actions are available, validate the returned decision against application rules, and verify relevant outcomes before acting.
The same guide describes a context-filter route with keep, truncate, and drop decisions. It identifies itself as an independent third-party tool and says it is not affiliated with TypeSafe or Cloudflare. Before integration, confirm endpoint ownership, the account you will use, and current terms directly with the intended service. Do not assume a filtering endpoint can decide safely what evidence to discard without application-specific checks.
9. Review provider and client assumptions
The realbogart/jev client README reports provider-enforced limits and notes that pinning the model matters when thresholds depend on model behavior. Treat this as implementation guidance for that client, not a substitute for the active provider’s documentation. The community jev-cookbook guide can offer implementation context, but it is not the authority for current model limits or security guarantees.
