First confirm that the page navigated and the product content is present and visible when the capture runs. If it is, compare headless mode and the browser environment; if you use Puppeteer’s chrome-headless-shell, test its documented GPU setting as a controlled experiment.
1. Confirm the page is ready before capturing
A screenshot records the browser page state at capture time. A successful screenshot call does not prove that a client-rendered product page has finished loading its content. Puppeteer’s screenshots guide shows waiting for network idle and documents waiting for a selector, but the right readiness condition depends on the page.

- Record the final URL and whether navigation succeeded.
- Choose a stable selector for the product image, product title, or another element that should be visible in a valid product view.
- Wait for that selector, then check that it is visible before taking the screenshot. For a product image, also check that it has usable image content rather than an empty or unresolved source.
- Use a page-specific readiness condition. Network idle can be useful, but do not assume it covers every application’s asynchronous rendering or lazy-loaded content.
If the element is missing, hidden, or empty, investigate navigation, application errors, rendering, and lazy loading first. If it is present and visible immediately before capture but the resulting image is blank, continue with the browser-mode and environment checks.
Puppeteer example: wait for the product element
Replace the URL and selector with the ones for your page. This example waits for a visible product image before capturing; the selector and any additional readiness checks must match the application.

const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({ width: 1440, height: 1000 });
const response = await page.goto('https://example.com/product', {
waitUntil: 'networkidle2',
});
console.log('Navigation status:', response?.status());
console.log('Final URL:', page.url());
const productImage = await page.waitForSelector('.product-image', {
visible: true,
timeout: 15000,
});
const imageState = await productImage.evaluate(img => ({
src: img.currentSrc || img.src,
complete: img.complete,
naturalWidth: img.naturalWidth,
naturalHeight: img.naturalHeight,
}));
console.log('Product image state:', imageState);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'product.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
The sample logs navigation and image state to help separate a page-readiness problem from a capture problem. A timeout waiting for the selector means the expected element was not found in time; it is not evidence that changing screenshot output format will fix the page.
2. Check the headless implementation and GPU setting
Puppeteer distinguishes regular headless Chrome from chrome-headless-shell. Its troubleshooting guide says the shell disables GPU compositing and shows --enable-gpu as a way to enable GPU acceleration in headless mode. Try this only when you have established that your run uses the shell:

Compare the result against the same capture without that argument, keeping the page and other settings constant. This is a diagnostic test, not a universal fix. Chrome’s GPU behavior also depends on suitable drivers being available in the environment, so record the host and driver context when interpreting the result.

If the blank output occurs only in CI, a container, a remote host, or one browser mode, reproduce the capture while holding the URL and application state constant. Playwright’s visual comparisons guide notes that rendering can vary with host OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode.

- fit-Headless DP supports 36 different resolutions from 800×600 up to 4088×2160. For game-streaming at high refresh rate use fit-Headless GS.
- Works with any operating system, no software installation required
- Plugs into mini-DP or DP port, does not require additional power
- Native DisplayPort (not DVI/HDMI DP++ emulation)
- Automation library and version
- Exact Chrome build and headless implementation
- Launch arguments and browser settings
- Host OS, hardware, and graphics-driver availability
- Viewport and device settings
- Navigation outcome, readiness condition, and target-element visibility
- Whether headed mode produces the expected image
Change one factor at a time—for example, compare headed and headless runs on the same host before comparing two different machines. This makes it easier to identify an environment-dependent rendering difference rather than attributing it to the page or screenshot call without evidence.
4. Separate browser startup errors from blank captures
A sandbox error is not the same problem as a browser that launches and produces a blank image. Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guide explains that Chrome uses multiple sandbox layers on Linux and identifies No usable sandbox! as a launch/configuration error when the host lacks a usable sandbox.

Do not add --no-sandbox as a general screenshot repair. Puppeteer discusses that flag only for content the operator fully trusts. For arbitrary product pages, first resolve the host’s sandbox configuration instead of weakening browser isolation.
5. Verify the file and avoid capture races
After the call, check that the output file exists and has plausible dimensions, then compare it with the page’s target-element state logged immediately before capture. Puppeteer’s Page.screenshot() API reference documents screenshot behavior and coordination around concurrent screenshot operations in a browser context. Keep concurrent page lifecycle operations out of the test while diagnosing; otherwise, timing can become another uncontrolled variable.

ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL through one API request instead of requiring you to configure a browser. It accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. It also provides an MCP server with screenshot tools for AI agents.
Here is the cURL call; replace YOUR_API_KEY with your key and change the target URL as needed. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
