A blank PNG does not by itself mean Selenium’s screenshot command failed: Chrome may have captured the page correctly before Google Search finished rendering, or the browser may not have loaded the expected page at all. First record the current URL, title, and visible page text; then check Chrome and ChromeDriver versions, compare headless and visible runs, and test Chrome in the same runtime. These checks help isolate page loading, browser setup, and screenshot capture without assuming a single Google-specific cause.
Why is my Selenium screenshot blank?
Selenium’s screenshot command captures the current browsing context; it does not establish that the page has loaded the content your test expects. A returned navigation call can precede the particular results or other content you need. Treat that as a diagnostic possibility, not a Google-specific Selenium rule.

Check the screenshot alongside the browser’s current URL, page title, and a small amount of visible page text or relevant DOM state. If the expected content is absent there too, investigate navigation, readiness, or the runtime before changing how the PNG is saved. If the expected content is present in the page state but missing from the image, investigate rendering, viewport, and capture behavior.

What to record before changing settings
Preserve the failing image and log enough information to reproduce the run. ChromeDriver is a separate executable used by Selenium to control Chrome, so record the versions of both rather than assuming the browser and driver selected in CI are the ones installed locally.

- Chrome, ChromeDriver, and Selenium versions
- Operating system and whether the run is headless
- Current URL and page title after navigation
- Visible page text or the relevant DOM state
- Screenshot file path and image dimensions
- Chrome and ChromeDriver logs, if available
Change one variable at a time and keep the same URL, viewport, browser and driver versions, and readiness condition for comparisons.
How to diagnose and fix it step by step
1. Wait for the content your test needs
After navigating, wait for a page-specific condition that represents the content you intend to capture. Then inspect the current URL, title, and page text or DOM before saving the image. A generic navigation completion signal may not mean that the visible content has rendered.
If the expected content is not present, focus on navigation or the runtime. If it is present but the image remains blank, move on to the browser configuration and capture checks.

2. Match Chrome and ChromeDriver major versions
Check the actual executable versions used by the failing test, especially in CI. Selenium’s Chrome documentation says Selenium 4 is compatible with Chrome 75 and later and that Chrome and ChromeDriver must match at the major-version level: Selenium Chrome documentation. Make sure the driver selected by the test is the one whose version you checked.
3. Compare headless and visible Chrome
Run the same test once with headless Chrome and once with a visible browser, holding the URL, versions, viewport, and readiness check constant. Chrome documents the --headless option for Selenium WebDriver: Chrome Headless mode.
- If visible Chrome works but headless does not, investigate the headless configuration and behavior specific to the versions in use.
- If both fail, prioritize page loading and the test environment rather than assuming headless mode is responsible.
This is a diagnostic comparison, not a guaranteed fix. A Selenium issue reported a blank white window after a Chrome 129 update, but an individual historical report does not establish a universal cause or a current workaround: SeleniumHQ issue 14514.

4. Test Chrome in the same CI or container environment
If the failure occurs in CI, a container, or a background service, try launching Chrome directly from that same environment. ChromeDriver’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking whether Chrome launches directly and whether the problem also occurs in the testing environment: Chrome doesn’t start or crashes immediately.
- If Chrome cannot launch directly, investigate the environment or browser binary before the Selenium screenshot call.
- If it launches directly but fails through WebDriver, compare the binary WebDriver selects, its flags and profile, and the available logs.
The second distinction follows from isolating direct browser launch from WebDriver control; it does not identify a cause without the failing run’s details.
5. Verify the screenshot artifact and dimensions
Use Selenium’s documented screenshot method for the active browsing context and verify that the file exists, was written successfully, and has nonzero dimensions. Selenium’s documentation explains working with the current browsing context and shows the screenshot response as base64-encoded: Selenium: Working with windows and tabs.

The available documentation does not establish a single Google Search-specific cause for blank screenshots. If the captured URL, page text, or logs indicate a page-level problem, inspect the evidence from that run before attributing it to any one explanation. Consent prompts, network policy, anti-automation responses, localization, or account state may be possibilities to investigate when the page state points that way; they are not established causes for this symptom.

No. Check the current URL, title, and page text or DOM state to see whether the expected page content was present at capture time.
Is the Chrome 129 blank-window report a general fix for this issue?

Can I conclude Google blocked Selenium from one blank image?
