If your Canon EOS Rebel T3i (also called the EOS 600D) will not autofocus, start with the lens’s AF/MF switch and mounting, then check the camera-lens contacts and shutter-button AF assignment. Next rule out focus distance and difficult subjects. Finally compare viewfinder AF with Live View: their focusing methods and indicators behave differently, so slow Live View or a silent AI Servo mode does not by itself mean the camera is broken.
1. Check the lens switch and mounting
- Set the lens focus switch to AF. With the switch at MF, the camera cannot autofocus. Canon states: “Autofocus will not operate if the focus mode switch on the lens is set to <MF>.” See Canon’s EOS Rebel T3i/EOS 600D autofocus troubleshooting.
- Reseat the lens securely. Turn the camera off, remove the lens, then attach it again until it is properly locked in place. A loose mount can interfere with communication between the camera and lens.
2. Check the camera-lens contacts
Dirty electrical contacts can interrupt communication and affect autofocus. Canon advises wiping them very gently with a clean, dry cloth. Do not use a wet cloth or touch the contacts directly; if they are particularly dirty, contact a Canon service center rather than attempting more aggressive cleaning. A clean, dry microfiber cloth is sufficient; Canon does not specify a brand or cleaning solution.

3. Confirm that a half-press starts autofocus
If a half-press of the shutter button meters or locks exposure instead of focusing, check Custom Function IV-9, “Shutter/AE lock button.” Canon’s troubleshooting says to choose a value other than 1 or 3 in the situations it describes. Canon’s focus-confirmation guidance identifies the default as [0: AF/AE lock]. The available choices and menu workflow depend on the current setting, so use the T3i manual listed on Canon’s support page rather than guessing. Canon’s autofocus troubleshooting page covers the shutter-button assignment.

Check the lens’s minimum focusing distance
The T3i cannot focus closer than the minimum focusing distance of the lens currently attached. Move farther from the subject and try again. The distance varies by lens; Canon’s focus-confirmation guidance explains this limitation.
#1 Best Overall
- Released on February 6, 2011
- 18MP APS-C CMOS sensor, 9-point AF system
- 3.7 frames per second continuous shooting
- ISO 100-6400 expandable to 12800
- 1080p HD video recording with manual controls
Give autofocus a clearer target
Canon lists low-contrast scenes, low light, strongly backlit reflective subjects, near-and-far objects overlapping, and repetitive patterns as difficult for AF. Try focusing on a clearly defined object at the same distance as your intended subject, then recompose. If autofocus still cannot lock, switch the lens to MF and focus manually. See Canon’s difficult-subjects guidance.
5. Match the AF mode to subject movement
| AF mode | Use it for | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| One-Shot AF | Still subjects | The camera focuses once. In this mode, the focus-confirmation light and beep provide the usual confirmation. |
| AI Servo AF | Moving subjects or changing focus distance | The camera continues focusing as the subject moves. Canon notes that the focus-confirmation light and beep do not behave as they do in One-Shot; their absence alone does not show that autofocus has failed. |
| AI Focus AF | Subjects that may start moving | The camera switches from One-Shot to Servo when it detects movement. |

6. Understand viewfinder AF and Live View
Viewfinder autofocus and Live View autofocus do not behave identically. The T3i offers Live, Face Detection Live, and Quick AF modes in Live View:
- Quick mode uses the dedicated AF sensor used for viewfinder shooting, but the Live View image is interrupted briefly while focusing.
- Live and Face Detection Live focus using the Live View image and take slightly longer to focus, according to Canon.
Therefore, slow focusing in Live or Face Detection Live, or a brief interruption in Quick mode, is expected behavior and does not establish a hardware fault. For careful manual focusing in Live View, set the lens to MF and magnify the display to about 5x or 10x. See Canon’s Live View AF modes guide.

7. When to contact service
If the lens is set to AF, mounted securely, the contacts are clean, the shutter-button assignment is appropriate, and the subject is within the lens’s focusing range, contact Canon service if autofocus still does not work. For a third-party lens, contact its manufacturer. Symptoms alone are not enough to identify a failed camera component; Canon’s model-specific troubleshooting also directs users to service when its checks do not resolve the problem.
