Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFirst find where the mismatch begins: play the prerecorded file locally, then compare it with an OBS recording or private test stream. If the file is already out of sync, repair or replace the file; if it is synchronized locally but not in the OBS output, investigate the OBS source or audio path; if the OBS output is synchronized but YouTube playback is not, check delivery and playback conditions. A constant offset and drift that grows over time are useful clues, but neither pattern alone proves a particular cause.
Identify whether the file, OBS, or YouTube playback is causing the problem
Use the exact file, scene, audio tracks, and playback method intended for the continuous stream. Choose a clear cue—such as a visible impact or a mouth movement paired with speech—and check it near both the beginning and end.

- Out of sync in local playback: the problem is present in the source file. Correct or replace that source before changing live-stream settings.
- In sync locally but out of sync in an OBS recording: the problem is introduced or exposed in the OBS scene, source configuration, or audio path.
- In sync in the OBS recording but apparently delayed or variable on YouTube: compare the stream output and delivery mode, and check YouTube stream health.
- Offset stays about the same: record it as a fixed offset. If it increases over time, record it as drift. These observations narrow the investigation but do not identify a universal cause.
Write down the file, operating system, OBS version, audio track selection, ingest protocol, and whether the mismatch is fixed or progressive. The right corrective control depends on those details.
Check the file and playback source
Play the exact file in a reliable media player and check the same sync cue near the start and end. If it is wrong there, fix or replace the file first; live-stream controls are not a dependable remedy for a defect already present in the source.

In OBS Studio, Media Source can play common video formats (.mp4, .ts, .mov, .flv, .mkv, .avi, .gif, .webm) and audio formats (.mp3, .aac, .ogg, .wav). Its controls include looping, restarting playback when active, hardware decoding, playback speed, and end-of-playback behavior. VLC Video can play a playlist and requires VLC to be installed. See the OBS Media Sources guide for source details.
Compare OBS output with local playback
- Build the intended scene. Use the same media source, playlist, audio tracks, and settings you plan to run continuously.
- Make a local OBS recording or private test broadcast. Include motion and audio similar to the real stream.
- Review the output itself. Play back the recording and check the sync cue early and late. Do not treat OBS audio monitoring alone as proof of the final program sync. OBS’s audio mixer guide recommends monitoring sources and reviewing a recording before publishing.
- For a YouTube test, monitor stream health. YouTube recommends representative tests with audio and movement similar to the intended stream and monitoring stream health. Its guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” See YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.
Change one setting at a time, repeat the same test, and keep a known-good configuration so you can revert a change that worsens sync.

If the original prerecorded file is out of sync
Correct or replace the source and repeat local playback checks near both the start and end. Do not assume a live audio delay control will repair timing embedded in the file.

Inspect that device’s source configuration. On Windows, OBS offers Use Device Timestamps for audio input/output capture and describes it as an attempt to prevent desynchronization. It applies to those captured-device sources; it is not a universal control for audio already embedded in a prerecorded Media Source. See the OBS audio capture guide.

Do not assume Advanced Audio Properties’ Sync Offset will correct a prerecorded Media Source’s embedded audio. The official OBS material cited here does not establish that use. A 2021 OBS forum post describes one user’s WAV media source that was unaffected by an offset, but that single report does not establish behavior across OBS versions and configurations: OBS forum discussion.
If only YouTube playback seems delayed
Distinguish delivery latency—the time it takes for viewers to receive the program—from audio and picture alignment within the program. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments. That difference alone does not show that HLS has misaligned audio and video. Compare the actual stream output and stream health before changing an encoder setting. See YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.

Check YouTube encoder settings without treating them as a sync cure
YouTube’s live encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264/H.265/AV1 video codecs, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant-bitrate encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. These are ingest recommendations, not a specific fix for sync faults; confirm current guidance before publishing.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Setting | YouTube guidance |
|---|---|
| Video frame rate | Up to 60 fps |
| Keyframe interval | Recommended: 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| Audio sample rate | 44.1 kHz for stereo; 48 kHz for 5.1 |
| Recommended audio bitrate | 128 Kbps for stereo; 384 Kbps for 5.1 |
| Transport | RTMP/RTMPS ingestion; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport |
For HLS, YouTube’s setup instructions specify segment durations from one to four seconds and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. These are HLS setup requirements, not evidence that switching protocols will fix a file-internal sync problem. See YouTube’s HLS guidance.

Troubleshoot common symptoms
| Symptom | What to check next | Practical action |
|---|---|---|
| Audio and picture are misaligned in local playback | Check the exact source file near its beginning and end. | Repair or replace the source, then retest it before streaming. |
| Local playback is correct, but an OBS recording is not | Check the selected Media Source, scene, audio track, and any separate captured audio device. | Test the source configuration; for a separate Windows audio capture device, inspect whether Use Device Timestamps is relevant. |
| Sync appears fine early but worse later | Compare the same kind of cue near the start and end in the source and OBS recording. | Record that the mismatch grows over time; test one relevant change at a time rather than treating a fixed offset as the answer. |
| OBS recording is correct, but YouTube playback seems late | Compare the program output, YouTube stream health, and ingest mode. | Determine whether the issue is delivery latency or actual internal A/V misalignment before changing protocol settings. |
| Changing Sync Offset does not affect embedded media audio | Confirm whether the audio is embedded in a Media Source rather than captured from a separate device. | Do not rely on Sync Offset as a proven fix for embedded prerecorded audio; return to source and output comparisons. |
