How to Fix Audio Clipping in a Pre-Recorded YouTube Live Stream

Trace clipping from the source file through playback and OBS before changing encoder settings. Learn where to lower gain, how compression and limiting help, and what to test in YouTube Live Control Room.

First, play the exact video or audio file you plan to stream. If it already sounds distorted, fix or replace the source; lowering a streaming level cannot restore audio that was clipped during recording or editing. If the file sounds clean, trace the signal through playback, your audio device and OBS, reduce gain at the first overloaded point, then test a recording and YouTube’s Live Control Room preview before the event.

Find where the clipping starts

Clipping is distortion caused when an audio signal is pushed beyond what a stage in the signal chain can handle. In a pre-recorded YouTube Live stream, the problem may be in the media file itself, playback software, a device or application level, the OBS mix, or the encoder configuration. Diagnose the earliest point where the sound turns harsh, crackly or flattened; adding processing at the end may hide a symptom without fixing its cause.

  1. Listen to the source file. Play the exact file intended for the stream through headphones or speakers at a reasonable listening level. If it is already distorted, the problem is upstream of OBS and YouTube.
  2. Listen as it enters OBS. Check the playback application and system volume, then the relevant source or device level. Listen to the signal in OBS and watch its mixer meter.
  3. Record a short local test. Use the same source and audio route as the planned stream. Play the recording back; OBS recommends checking both the device signal and the signal in OBS, then listening to a recording before going live (OBS mixer monitoring).
  4. Compare the local result with YouTube. If the local recording is clean but the YouTube stream is not, inspect the encoder output, Live Control Room messages and local archive. YouTube advises checking the encoder, live dashboard, CPU load and local archive when stream audio sounds poor (YouTube audio troubleshooting).

Fix the source if it is already distorted

If the original media file itself sounds clipped, lower OBS’s fader only makes the damaged audio quieter; it does not establish that the distortion has been repaired. Re-export from a clean edit or use an appropriate audio repair workflow. A limiter is a peak ceiling, not a documented way to reconstruct waveform detail that was already lost in the source (OBS Limiter Filter).

Do not use a streaming filter as a substitute for correcting a damaged file. Confirm the repaired or replacement export by listening to that exact file before configuring the stream.

Reduce gain at the first overloaded point

When the file is clean but the playback chain distorts, lower the level where the problem first appears. Start with the playback application or the device feeding OBS, then adjust the OBS source or mixer fader if necessary. OBS’s guidance is to check the device and listen again as the signal reaches OBS, rather than assuming the mixer is the only source of trouble (OBS mixer monitoring).

  • Change one level at a time and listen again; otherwise it is difficult to identify which stage caused the distortion.
  • Keep an eye on the OBS mixer meter while listening to the signal. A meter is useful evidence, but also listen to a recording because the sound reaching the output is what matters.
  • Avoid raising output or makeup gain after reducing peaks if that pushes the signal back into overload.

Use compression and a limiter for peaks—not as repairs

Once the signal is clean at its source and through the input path, OBS filters can help manage changing loudness and peaks. A compressor reduces louder signals, lowering the likelihood that peaks exceed 0 dB; OBS generally places it near the beginning of the filter chain (OBS Compressor Filter). A limiter constrains output peaks and belongs at the end of the chain so later processing does not undo its ceiling (OBS Limiter Filter).

OBS documents a default limiter threshold of -6 dB. That is a software default, not a universal target for every program. Set processing while listening to the actual material, and check that added output or makeup gain does not recreate clipping.

Check YouTube’s live audio format settings

Codec, bitrate and sample rate are compatibility and ingestion settings, not a cure for an overloaded audio signal. YouTube’s published live encoder recommendations list AAC or MP3 audio, 128 Kbps for stereo and 384 Kbps for 5.1, with 44.1 kHz recommended for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1. These are YouTube’s stated recommendations on its live encoder settings page, accessed October 3, 2026; confirm the current guidance when configuring an encoder (YouTube live encoder settings).

  • For 5.1, check that the encoder is using AAC or MP3, 384 Kbps and a 48 kHz sample rate.
  • If YouTube reports incorrect audio settings, check for an unsupported codec, incorrect sample rate, or absent or multiple audio streams in the encoder configuration (YouTube audio troubleshooting).

Test the actual program before going live

Make a local recording or test stream using the same media, playback route and encoder settings planned for the event. Listen to the result and check the YouTube Live Control Room preview before scheduling or starting the live event. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the actual stream and monitoring stream quality during an encoder stream (YouTube live streaming tips; YouTube live encoder settings).

Troubleshooting by symptom

What you hear or see Where to investigate Next step
The original media file is already distorted. The source recording or prior edit. Re-edit or replace the source. A limiter is not documented as a restoration tool (OBS Limiter Filter).
The file sounds clean, but OBS’s meter or local recording suggests distortion. Playback level, system or device gain, source level, or OBS mix. Trace the signal from the device into OBS and reduce gain at the first overloaded point (OBS mixer monitoring).
The OBS recording sounds clean, but the YouTube stream sounds bad. Encoder output or the audio routed to it. Check encoder output, Live Control Room messages and the local archive, then compare with a test stream (YouTube audio troubleshooting).
YouTube reports incorrect audio settings. Encoder ingestion format. Check codec, sample rate, bitrate and the number of audio streams against YouTube’s current settings guidance (YouTube live encoder settings; YouTube audio troubleshooting).

Or let it run in the cloud

For a pre-recorded program that needs to loop on YouTube, StreamNeo keeps the channel live from uploaded videos in the cloud. The setup is: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded video; it does not go live from a camera.
