Start by identifying what you’re using: the Apple TV app on a smart TV, streaming device, game console, computer, phone, or tablet—or Apple TV hardware such as Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD. The menus and update steps differ. Then check for service outages, test the account and network, restart and update the device, and reserve resetting the app for last because it removes accounts and configuration.
First, identify the problem and check for an outage
“Apple TV” can mean the Apple TV app or an Apple TV device connected to a television. Follow the instructions for the product you actually use; the app’s menus are not the same across platforms.

If a show or movie will not start, check Apple System Status and, if the content comes from a third-party channel or provider, check that provider’s service status too. If a service is interrupted, wait and try again later rather than changing local settings.
Note whether the problem affects every title or only one provider, and whether it is playback, picture quality, or sign-in. Those distinctions help narrow down the cause.

Fix Apple Account sign-in problems
First determine which account the error refers to. An Apple Account sign-in issue is different from a login problem for a third-party streaming service accessed through the Apple TV app. Use the recovery steps for the account named in the error.
For Apple Account access, follow Apple’s password reset guidance and its instructions for getting a two-factor authentication verification code. If you are setting up Apple TV hardware, Apple supports setup with an iPhone as well as manual entry of account details. Screens and labels can vary by device and software version.

Test the connection before changing settings
Apple says HD streaming requires an internet connection of 8 Mbit/s or faster. That is a stated threshold, not a guarantee: other household traffic, wireless conditions, or service problems can still interrupt playback at that speed.

- If playback fails on that device too, check service status again. If there is no reported outage, Apple recommends contacting your internet service provider (ISP).
- If you are using weak mobile data, try Wi-Fi. If several people are using the connection, ask them to pause other internet activity briefly and retry.
On some supported smart TVs, streaming devices, consoles, cable services, or satellite services, the Apple TV app provides a diagnostic at Settings > Video Troubleshooting > Start. Follow the prompts if that option appears. Apple notes that app features and content availability vary by device and region.

If you use Apple TV hardware
On Apple TV 4K, open the network settings to select a different Wi-Fi network. Hotels and institutions may use captive Wi-Fi networks that require a sign-in page. When Apple TV prompts you, continue the process on a nearby iPhone or iPad and enter the required network details there. These sessions can expire, so you may need to reconnect.
Ethernet is an option only on Apple TV hardware with an Ethernet port. Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi does not have Ethernet, so a cable cannot provide a wired connection for that model. Check the exact hardware before trying a wired-network test.

Restart the device and retry playback
For poor video quality or playback that stops, Apple recommends restarting the affected device and reducing competing internet use during the retry.

- For a smart TV or streaming device, turn it off and on again.
- For Apple devices or a PC, restart the device.
- If the device supports downloads, try downloading the affected content. A successful download can be a useful workaround when streaming is unreliable.
Update the app or platform
Use the update route for the platform where the Apple TV app is installed:
- Apple devices: Update the device’s software; this updates the Apple TV app.
- Windows: Update Windows and device drivers, then update the Apple TV app from Microsoft Store.
- Android: Update Android, then update the app from Google Play.
- Compatible smart TVs, streaming devices, and consoles: The app should update automatically. If an update or device-software issue persists, consult the device manufacturer’s support.
Reset the Apple TV app only as a last resort
On supported third-party devices, the Apple TV app has a reset option in its Settings. Resetting restores the app’s original settings and removes accounts and configuration. Apple also says it removes personal information, TV shows, and movies from the smart TV. Try service, account, network, restart, and update checks first; do not reset unless you are prepared to set the app up again.

- The same content fails across devices on the same network: After checking for service interruptions, contact your ISP.
