Apple Photos search and iCloud Photos syncing are separate problems: search depends on what you search and which library or album is in view, while cross-device updates depend on iCloud Photos settings and the library’s sync status. Start by checking the search scope or the status message for the affected device; don’t turn iCloud Photos off as a general fix.
Why can’t Apple Photos find a photo I know is there?
First check where you are searching. A search inside a specific album or collection is narrower than a search across your library, so a photo stored elsewhere may not appear. Apple documents searching in the library, Collections, or within an album or collection. Apple’s iPhone Photos search guide describes the available search options.

Try a query that matches the photo
Photos can search using details such as date, place, business, category or scene, event, identified person, visible text, and caption. Try a distinctive detail rather than only a broad term. If results are too broad, refine them with a media type such as “Video” or “Portrait.”
Check Personal and Shared Library
If you use iCloud Shared Photo Library, check that view as well as Personal Library. Content moved to Shared Library may not appear when you are viewing only your personal collection. Where available, searching for the participant who added the item can also help narrow the results.

Separate ordinary search from Apple Intelligence
Apple Intelligence natural-language search is not a universal requirement for finding photos: the standard search categories above are separate. Apple Intelligence features depend on supported devices, software, language, and region, and availability can change. If ordinary supported searches still miss a photo, Apple’s guide does not describe a universal search-index reset. Avoid deleting library databases, rebuilding the library, or toggling iCloud Photos as an unverified search repair. If the failure persists, contact Apple Support with your device model, OS version, query type, and whether the photo appears on another device.
How do I see whether iCloud Photos is still syncing?
Read the status in Photos before changing settings; it often explains whether syncing is paused, waiting, or blocked by particular items. The screen depends on the device and OS version. Apple’s iCloud Photos troubleshooting guide gives platform-specific steps and messages.
- Recent iPhone or iPad software: Open Photos, go to Collections, then tap the profile button.
- iOS 17 or earlier: Open Photos, choose Library, select All Photos, and scroll to the bottom.
- Mac: Open Photos, choose Library, select All Photos, and scroll down. The status can show the last iCloud update, unsynced item count, and items stored only on that Mac.
On Mac, an item reported as stored only on the computer may be a referenced file rather than a file consolidated into the Photos library. Apple documents consolidating referenced files separately; it is not the same as resolving a general sync pause. See Apple’s instructions for consolidating a Mac Photos library.

Why aren’t my iCloud photos syncing to my other Apple device?
Check the account and iCloud Photos setting on every device, then follow the Photos status message. The devices need to use the same Apple Account, and iCloud Photos must be enabled. Apple’s setup guide lists the current paths; labels may differ on older OS versions. Apple’s setup instructions for iCloud Photos cover iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
- iPhone or iPad: Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos > turn on Sync this device.
- Mac: System Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos > turn on Sync this Mac. Older macOS versions use different settings labels.
If the Mac has multiple Photos libraries, only the System Photo Library stays current with iCloud Photos. Also confirm that you are looking in the right library—Personal or Shared—on each device.

A pause does not necessarily mean syncing is broken. Apple lists conditions such as low battery, power-saving or data settings, heat, performance optimization, a weak network, or full iCloud storage. Connect the device to power and Wi-Fi, give it uninterrupted time, and act on the status message. Large libraries or files may take many hours to sync.

- If the network is poor, connect to a reliable Wi-Fi network.
- If iCloud storage is full, make room in iCloud storage.
- If Photos offers Sync Now, tap it after addressing the stated cause; otherwise, syncing may resume automatically.
Apple Support explicitly advises: “Don’t turn off iCloud or iCloud Photos” while troubleshooting a sync issue. Turning the feature off is not a generic way to restart a stuck upload.
If only some photos will not upload
When the overall library is syncing but a few items are not, check the Unable to Upload album in Photos. Apple recommends checking that the device is updated, whether other iCloud services work, the network and Apple System Status, and whether the media format is supported. These checks can help distinguish a device-wide pause from a problem limited to particular files.
Mac recovery for items in Unable to Upload
For certain Mac items that cannot upload, Apple describes exporting the originals and reimporting them. This is an item-specific recovery, not a general search or library-sync reset. Apple warns that edits and keywords may be lost during this process. Before deleting anything, protect the original files and follow Apple’s detailed Unable to Upload instructions carefully.
