How to Fix Apple Music Audio Problems on Apple TV

Find out whether an Apple TV audio problem affects every app or only Apple Music, then follow the relevant HDMI, Dolby Atmos, Sound Check or Lossless checks.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

First check whether audio is missing everywhere on Apple TV or only in Apple Music. If every app and navigation sounds are silent, troubleshoot the HDMI and audio-output chain; if other apps work, check the Apple Music setting that matches the symptom—Dolby Atmos, Sound Check, or Lossless—without assuming it caused the problem.

Before changing anything, note what you hear and how Apple TV is connected: complete silence, intermittent sound, or audio that plays but seems quieter or uses a different format. Also note whether Apple TV connects straight to the television or passes through a receiver or HDMI switch. These comparisons help you test the relevant part of the setup without treating every audio symptom as the same fault.

Start by identifying what is actually wrong

Play audio in another Apple TV app, then navigate the Apple TV interface and listen for its sounds. This quick comparison separates a system-wide audio failure from a Music-specific difference. Note whether you have complete silence, sound that cuts out, or audio that plays but is quieter or in a different format than expected; those symptoms call for different checks.

  • Other apps and interface sounds are also silent: follow the HDMI, power, output, and processing checks below. The fault may be anywhere in the path from Apple TV through a switch or receiver to the television or speakers.
  • Other apps work, but Apple Music is silent or sounds different: check the Music settings and content details. A system-wide no-sound checklist can help test the connection, but it does not by itself establish an Apple Music-specific cause.
  • Only navigation sounds are missing: check the Sound Effects and Music control in Video and Audio settings.
  • Music plays, but Atmos seems quieter or is not identified as Atmos: distinguish a loudness difference from a missing format. Sound Check addresses the former; the Atmos setting, eligible equipment, HDMI route, and track badge help investigate the latter.

After each change, test the same content or sound again. Changing one thing at a time makes it easier to identify whether the cause was a cable, a connection in the audio chain, a device setting, or a difference in the track itself. If a setting makes no difference, note that result and move on rather than stacking several changes together.

For a useful comparison, test another app at roughly the same point in the connection chain, then listen to Apple Music again. A direct connection to the television can be compared with the usual route through a receiver or switch. Likewise, compare total silence with an audio-level or format difference: a format label or a quieter mix is not the same symptom as a complete loss of output.

If Apple TV has no sound in any app

Work through these checks in order, testing playback after each. They follow the signal path from the Apple TV’s HDMI connection to the devices that process and play the audio. If only Apple Music is affected, these steps may still help rule out the HDMI path, but they do not demonstrate that the Music app itself is at fault.

1. Reseat the HDMI cable and test another cable

  1. Turn off the television and any receiver or sound bar in the chain.
  2. Unplug the HDMI cable at both ends, then reconnect it firmly to the same ports. Check the Apple TV end and the television, receiver, or sound bar end; a loose connection at either side can interrupt the path.
  3. Turn the equipment back on and test audio.
  4. If there is still no sound, try another HDMI cable. Apple specifies an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for HDMI 2.1 and a Premium High Speed HDMI cable for HDMI 2.0. Match the cable recommendation to the HDMI version in use; replacing a cable is a diagnostic test, not a general fix for Music settings or every audio problem.

Keep the original cable available while testing so you can compare like with like. If another cable restores audio, that result implicates the original cable or its connection; it does not mean a cable change will resolve an Atmos setting or an Apple Music loudness difference. Do not buy a new cable merely because a Music track is quieter than another track.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Restart the devices in the audio path

Turn off the television, unplug Apple TV from power, and reconnect it to restart. If a receiver or speaker receiver is in the setup, power-cycle it as well. Then test playback again. This check can reveal a temporary connection or device-state problem; if the symptom remains, continue rather than repeatedly restarting.

When several devices are involved, make sure the television and receiver are back on before judging the result. Use the same app and content that demonstrated the problem. This keeps a changed source or a different connection from confusing the comparison.

3. Bypass the receiver or HDMI switch

Connect Apple TV directly to an HDMI input on the television, temporarily removing an HDMI switch or AV receiver from the path. Test the same audio again. If sound returns with the direct connection, the result points to the bypassed part of the chain or its settings; consult that device’s manufacturer for help. If the television still produces no sound, continue with Apple TV’s output settings.

This is a comparison, not necessarily a permanent wiring recommendation. A receiver may be the device that plays sound through your speakers, and a television may not pass every audio format through to another device. For Atmos in particular, the recommended route can differ from a basic silence test: Apple TV 4K should connect directly to the Atmos-capable sound bar or AV receiver. Restore the usual setup after testing and use the Atmos-specific connection guidance below.

4. Test Apple TV’s audio format settings

  1. Open Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format.
  2. Turn on Change Format and test a different available format.
  3. If the issue persists, test with Continuous Audio off.

These are diagnostic changes, not settings that every system should permanently use. Apple TV 4K automatically selects the best format supported by the connected setup. Stereo is intended for stereo systems; Dolby Digital 5.1 is an option when the equipment does not support Dolby Atmos or multichannel PCM. Continuous Audio uses Dolby MAT when audio formats change. With older receivers, an Atmos indicator can appear even when the original audio format is playing, so the indicator alone does not prove what format the content is using.

Try one format change at a time and retest. If a different format restores sound, the result suggests that the prior format was not working across the full chain; it does not prove that Apple Music caused the fault. You can use a supported format as a practical workaround, but consider the capabilities of the Apple TV, television, receiver, and speakers together before deciding which setting to keep.

5. Check Audio Mode and Audio Output

In Settings > Video and Audio, set Audio Mode to 16 bit. If you are using the television’s speakers, a sound bar, or a receiver for output, set Audio Output to Apple TV. Test again before changing another setting.

These controls belong to Apple TV’s general video and audio settings, not the Apple Music quality menu. If changing them has no effect, move on to the remaining checks rather than repeatedly switching modes. That keeps the troubleshooting focused on the setting that changed the result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Turn off processing on the television or receiver

Temporarily disable volume leveling and other audio-processing controls on the television or receiver, then retest. Such processing can affect how audio is output, so this helps determine whether the playback chain—not Apple Music’s content setting—is involved. If disabling processing makes no difference, you can restore the controls you prefer.

Do this as a test, not as a blanket recommendation to leave processing off. If it changes the symptom, the setting on the television or receiver is relevant to the result; if it does not, restore your preferred processing and continue with the checks that match your particular Apple Music symptom.

If only interface or navigation sounds are absent

Open Settings > Video and Audio and turn on Sound Effects and Music. This specifically controls sounds heard while navigating Apple TV; it is separate from the Dolby Atmos, Sound Check, and Lossless options in the Music settings. Apple’s instruction for missing navigation sounds is to enable this control, so there is no need to change the Apple Music quality settings just to restore interface sounds.

If Apple Music is the only app with a problem

When other apps play normally, leave system-wide format changes alone unless you have reason to suspect the HDMI path. Match the check to the symptom instead:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Atmos is missing: confirm that the Apple TV model, software, audio setup, connection path, and track are eligible for Atmos.
  • Atmos tracks sound quieter than stereo: turn on Sound Check in Music settings.
  • You are checking lossless playback: verify the Apple TV 4K connection and Lossless setting, and note the supported resolution limit.
  • Music has no sound but other apps do: first identify whether the issue is tied to a format or Music setting you can compare. The general HDMI checks can rule out parts of the path, but the symptoms alone do not establish an account, service, or app cause.

These settings address different issues. Lossless is a quality option, for example, not a general remedy for silence or intermittent audio. Similarly, Sound Check is Apple’s recommendation for Atmos tracks that sound quieter than stereo; it is not a fix for missing audio in every app. Avoid changing several Music and system settings at once, because you will not know which change mattered.

Fix missing or unexpected Dolby Atmos playback

Check the Apple TV and audio equipment

Dolby Atmos on Apple TV 4K requires current tvOS and a compatible audio setup. Apple lists HomePod speakers set as the default audio output, a Dolby Atmos-compatible sound bar, AV receiver, or television, and Apple or Beats Bluetooth headphones among the eligible setups. The presence of an Atmos-capable product somewhere in the room is not enough: the connection between Apple TV and the equipment that handles the sound matters.

Open Settings > Apps > Music > Dolby Atmos and select Automatic or Off. For Atmos playback, use Automatic and confirm that the rest of the setup and the track support the format. Setting it to Off disables Atmos playback; it is a useful comparison if you are checking whether a problem is limited to Atmos content.

Check the capabilities of the devices that actually form the audio route, not just the most recently purchased component. The television, receiver, and sound bar may have different format support, and the connected ports and route matter too. If the Atmos option is missing, confirm current tvOS and the eligible setup before treating the menu or track as defective. Do not assume that every television can forward Atmos to a separate receiver or sound bar.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the HDMI route

For Apple TV 4K Atmos through a sound bar or AV receiver, connect Apple TV directly to an HDMI input on that sound bar or receiver. Many televisions do not support passing Atmos audio through to a sound bar or receiver, and Apple’s high-bandwidth Atmos does not work over ARC connections. If Atmos is unavailable, inspect the capabilities of the television, receiver, and sound bar and the exact route between them before considering a hardware change.

Apple TV 4K automatically selects a format supported by the setup, but automatic selection cannot make an unsupported connection pass Atmos. If a direct connection to the Atmos-capable device is not practical, the television’s documented audio passthrough capability is a key part of diagnosing the chain. Compare the direct-to-device route with the television route only if the hardware supports the route you are testing; a missing Atmos option over an unsupported connection is not evidence that the Music track is wrong.

ARC is a particular pitfall in this setup: Apple’s high-bandwidth Atmos does not work over ARC. Do not treat an ARC link as equivalent to connecting Apple TV directly to the Atmos-capable receiver or sound bar. If you are considering a different cable or new equipment, first identify which devices and connections in your current chain support Atmos; compatibility is not a universal fix for every audio issue.

Verify that the track or album version is Atmos

Not every song or album version is offered in Dolby Atmos. Look for the Dolby Atmos badge in the playback controls or the album information. Apple notes that a song may be available in Atmos only on a particular version of an album, so check the version currently playing rather than assuming every listing of the song has the same mix.

This is a useful content-versus-connection comparison. If the badge appears for one album version but not another, check which version is selected before changing equipment settings. If the badge is absent, the track may not be offered in Atmos in that version; the absence alone does not show that Apple TV’s audio path is broken.

If Atmos tracks sound quieter than stereo

Turn on Settings > Apps > Music > Sound Check. Apple recommends Sound Check for the specific case where Dolby Atmos tracks sound quieter than stereo tracks. After enabling it, compare the same track or a similar passage at a comfortable listening level.

Sound Check addresses perceived level differences; it does not establish that a missing Atmos badge, absent audio, or connection fault has been fixed. For those symptoms, use the relevant checks above instead. Do not infer from a quieter Atmos mix alone that the receiver, cable, or Apple TV is malfunctioning; first use Sound Check as the focused comparison Apple recommends.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

If you are troubleshooting Lossless audio

For Apple TV 4K, Apple’s stated requirements for lossless playback are current tvOS and an HDMI connection to an AV receiver. The setting is Settings > Apps > Music > Audio Quality > Lossless. Apple TV 4K does not support Hi-Res Lossless at sample rates above 48 kHz.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Lossless is a playback-quality setting, not a way to restore missing sound or correct an Atmos loudness difference. If enabling it does not produce the quality you expected, confirm the Apple TV 4K and HDMI-to-receiver requirements before treating the setting as evidence that the whole chain supports a higher-resolution format. In particular, the 48 kHz ceiling means that enabling Lossless should not be taken as support for Hi-Res Lossless above that sample rate.

Keep this test separate from Atmos troubleshooting. Lossless has its own Music menu and connection requirements, while Atmos depends on compatible content and a compatible audio path. If your immediate symptom is silence or quieter Atmos, use the relevant steps for that symptom rather than changing Lossless in the hope that it will correct unrelated playback behavior.

Use the result of each test to narrow the cause

Keep track of the connection and settings that changed the result. The pattern is more useful than making several adjustments at once:

  • Direct connection to the TV restores audio: focus on the receiver or HDMI switch that was removed, including its connection and settings.
  • Changing HDMI cable restores audio: the original cable or its connection was implicated; use a cable appropriate to the HDMI version.
  • Only a different audio format works: the setup may not support the prior format across the full chain. Choose a format the equipment can handle rather than assuming the Music app is at fault.
  • Only navigation sounds are absent: enable Sound Effects and Music in Video and Audio settings; this is a different control from Music’s Atmos and Sound Check settings.
  • Other apps work, but Music remains affected: check the specific Music setting, Atmos badge, and album version relevant to the symptom. The checks described here do not establish an account entitlement problem, service outage, or app bug as the cause.
  • Nothing changes the result: restore any temporary settings that did not help. If Apple Music alone remains affected after the relevant checks, contact Apple Support for device- and account-specific diagnosis rather than guessing at a cause.

When comparing results, keep the rest of the setup as consistent as possible: use the same Apple TV, the same television or speakers, and the same content when practical. A successful direct-connection test does not prove the television can pass Atmos through, and a receiver’s Atmos indicator does not by itself confirm that the original audio format is Atmos. Use the content badge and the supported connection path to check Atmos specifically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you reach out to Apple Support, describe the precise symptom and the tests that changed or did not change it: whether other apps and interface sounds work, whether direct HDMI changes the result, and which Music setting or track version you checked. This is more useful than labeling the issue an app bug before the device- and account-specific diagnosis.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do if my Apple TV has no sound?

Check whether other apps and navigation sounds are silent too. If they are, reseat both ends of the HDMI cable, try another cable appropriate to the HDMI version, restart Apple TV and the connected equipment, and test with Apple TV connected directly to the television. Then try the relevant Audio Format, Audio Mode, Audio Output, and TV or receiver processing checks.

Why do Dolby Atmos tracks sound quieter than stereo tracks?

Turn on Sound Check at Settings > Apps > Music > Sound Check. Apple recommends this setting for Atmos tracks that sound quieter than stereo. It addresses perceived loudness differences, not missing audio or an absent Atmos badge.

Why is Dolby Atmos missing from Apple Music on Apple TV?

On Apple TV 4K, check that tvOS is current, Dolby Atmos is set to Automatic, and your audio setup is eligible. For a sound bar or AV receiver, connect Apple TV directly to that device; many televisions do not pass Atmos through, and Apple’s high-bandwidth Atmos does not work over ARC. Also check for the Atmos badge and remember that a song may be available in Atmos only on a particular album version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Apple TV 4K support Hi-Res Lossless above 48 kHz?

No. Apple TV 4K does not support Hi-Res Lossless at sample rates above 48 kHz. Apple’s stated Lossless setup requires current tvOS and an HDMI connection to an AV receiver.

What if only Apple Music has no sound after I check its settings and connection?

The troubleshooting checks here do not establish an account entitlement issue, service outage, or app bug as the cause. If other apps work and Apple Music remains affected after you check the relevant Music settings and connection path, contact Apple Support for device- and account-specific diagnosis.

The Bottom Line

Start with the scope: if every Apple TV app is silent, work through the HDMI and output chain; if only Apple Music sounds different, check the setting and content that match the symptom. Use direct connections and format changes as diagnostic comparisons, not universal fixes. For quieter Atmos tracks, try Sound Check; for missing Atmos, confirm the track, compatible equipment, and HDMI route; for Lossless, remember Apple TV 4K’s 48 kHz Hi-Res Lossless limit.
