How Does the Mac Studio Compare With a Gaming PC for 4K Gaming?

A Mac Studio can play some demanding Mac games, but 4K display output is not a frame-rate promise. For gaming first, a gaming PC is usually the more practical choice.

For 4K gaming as the main goal, a gaming PC is usually the more practical choice: it offers discrete graphics-card options, broad Windows game support and game-specific settings that make it easier to target high performance. A Mac Studio can run some demanding Mac-native games well, but results depend on the game, graphics settings and upscaling—and Apple’s ability to output a 4K signal at 240Hz does not mean a game will render at 4K and 240 frames per second.

What the comparison means for a 4K gamer

The key difference is not simply that one computer can connect to a 4K monitor and the other cannot. Both kinds of computer may produce a 4K display signal. The practical question is whether the games you want to play are available on the system, and how well that particular hardware can render them at the settings and frame rate you want.

A Mac Studio is a powerful desktop Mac designed for demanding work as well as general use. Its graphics hardware can handle some games, and a specific test of an earlier Mac Studio showed high frame rates in Cyberpunk 2077 under particular conditions. But it is not a dedicated gaming device, and its capabilities do not establish that every PC game or launcher will work on macOS.

A gaming PC is generally the more straightforward purchase when gaming is the priority. It can be configured around a discrete GPU, and the Windows game ecosystem and game-specific graphics options give buyers more ways to match hardware to a target such as 4K at a desired frame rate. That is a practical advantage, not a universal benchmark claim: performance still depends on the exact PC, GPU, game, settings and rendering method.

4K output is not the same as 4K game performance

It helps to separate six ideas that are often collapsed into the phrase “4K gaming.”

  • Display output: The signal sent from the computer to the monitor. Apple lists 4K output up to 240Hz for supported single-display arrangements. This describes supported signaling, not the speed of a game.
  • Rendered resolution: The resolution at which the game actually draws its image. A game may render below 4K and then scale the result to fit a 4K screen.
  • Upscaling: A rendering technique that can increase frame rate by generating a higher-resolution output from a lower-resolution render. The visual result and performance effect depend on the game and the selected mode.
  • Frame rate: The number of frames the game renders each second. A monitor capable of refreshing at 240Hz cannot make a game produce 240 frames per second.
  • Image quality: The combined result of resolution, graphics preset, ray tracing, upscaling and other game settings. A higher frame rate can come with a different image-quality trade-off.
  • Compatibility: Whether the game and its launcher support the operating system. Mac hardware performance is irrelevant for a title that is not available or usable on that Mac.

When someone says a system “does 4K,” ask whether that means it can output a 4K desktop, render a particular game at native 4K, or upscale to a 4K display. Those are different claims. Likewise, a frame-rate number is meaningful only alongside the game, system configuration, settings and upscaling method used to produce it.

What current Mac Studio specifications do—and do not—tell you

As of October 13, 2026, Apple’s announced Mac Studio lineup uses M5 Max or M5 Ultra. Apple says M5 Max can be configured with up to a 40-core GPU, while M5 Ultra can be configured with up to an 80-core GPU. Apple’s 2026 launch announcement claims graphics are up to 1.8 times faster than the previous generation under its stated test conditions.

That 1.8-times figure is an Apple-published comparison with the previous generation. It is not an independent gaming benchmark, does not directly compare an M5 Mac Studio with a gaming PC and should not be converted into a predicted game frame rate. GPU core counts also do not provide a like-for-like measure against a PC graphics card: the systems use different architectures, and the number alone does not tell you how a particular game performs.

Apple also lists 4K output up to 240Hz for supported single-display arrangements, with variable refresh rate and HDR support. These specifications matter if you are choosing a compatible display and want to know what signal the Mac can send. They do not establish that any game can render at native 4K at 240 frames per second, or even that a particular game supports the same refresh-rate and display features on macOS.

Apple SVP of Hardware Engineering John Ternus described the Mac Studio in Apple’s March 2025 launch announcement as “the most powerful Mac we’ve ever made.” That is a statement about Apple’s Mac lineup at that time; it does not establish gaming superiority over PCs.

What the published Cyberpunk 2077 tests show

The available test results are useful examples of how much settings and rendering methods matter, but they are not a controlled comparison of the current M5 Mac Studio against an equivalent desktop gaming PC.

TechRadar tested Cyberpunk 2077 on a 2025 Mac Studio configured with an M3 Ultra, a 32-core CPU, an 80-core GPU and 256GB of unified memory. The reviewer reported these averages:

Test configuration Reported average What the result establishes
4K with FSR enabled 135.51fps The reviewed M3 Ultra Mac Studio achieved this result in the reviewer’s specific Cyberpunk 2077 test and configuration.
Ray-traced reflections and medium ray-traced lighting 69.59fps Adding the stated ray-tracing features was associated with a substantially lower reported average in that test.
More ray-tracing features with FSR Performance 60.83fps A different combination of ray tracing and an upscaling mode produced this reported average.

These figures are not three results from an otherwise identical settings sweep unless the test report establishes that the other settings remained the same. In particular, the 135.51fps result includes FSR, while the other two rows describe different ray-tracing and upscaling configurations. They show that a Mac Studio can produce high frame rates in a demanding Mac-native game under some conditions, and that ray tracing and upscaling can materially change the result. They do not predict the performance of an M5 model or of other games.

Tom’s Guide has also compared Cyberpunk 2077 results across tested Macs and Windows gaming laptops. It reports that most of its tested Windows laptops produced higher raw results than the Macs, while noting that it had not tested every Mac configuration. Its cited raw Windows results omit upscaling. They therefore should not be compared as if all systems used the same rendering method, and laptop results should not be treated as desktop gaming-PC results.

Taken together, these reviews do not support a reliable percentage by which a current Mac Studio is slower or faster than an equivalent current gaming desktop. They cover different systems and configurations, and the supplied comparisons do not establish a complete current-generation head-to-head test. Do not apply one Cyberpunk number to a different game or treat mismatched settings as a fair comparison.

Mac Studio or gaming PC: which fits your use?

Your priority More practical fit Why
Playing a broad PC game library Gaming PC Windows game support and launcher compatibility make it the safer default; check support for each title before buying a Mac.
Playing a specific game that has a suitable macOS version Either, depending on your target Check that game’s Mac support and evaluate its performance on the exact hardware and settings you intend to use.
Reaching a particular 4K frame-rate target Usually a gaming PC A PC’s discrete GPU choices and game-specific settings make it easier to configure around a gaming performance target. Verify benchmarks for the exact game and GPU.
Using one computer primarily for demanding Mac work, with gaming as a secondary use Mac Studio may fit Its gaming potential can be a bonus if the games you want are supported, but the gaming tests do not make it a dedicated gaming-device recommendation.
Assuming a high-refresh display guarantees high frame rates Neither Monitor refresh rate is a display capability; the game and computer must still render frames at the desired rate.

The gaming-PC recommendation is about fit and flexibility rather than a claim that every PC beats every Mac. A gaming PC with an unspecified or unsuitable GPU is not automatically a better 4K gaming system than a Mac Studio. Conversely, a powerful Mac Studio is not automatically the better gaming buy just because Apple lists high GPU core counts or high-refresh 4K output.

How to compare actual systems before buying

Start with the games you intend to play, not a generic “4K capable” label. For each title, confirm operating-system availability and launcher support, then compare results that use the same game version and materially similar settings.

  1. List your must-play games. Check whether each title has a Mac version and whether its launcher supports macOS. Do not assume that an entire PC library will work on Mac; the available evidence does not establish that.
  2. Set a realistic display and frame-rate goal. Decide whether you want native 4K rendering, a 4K output using upscaling, or a particular frame rate. A 4K/240Hz output specification alone cannot answer this.
  3. Identify the exact configurations. Record the Mac chip and GPU configuration or, for a PC, the specific graphics card and whether it is a desktop or laptop part. Do not compare a gaming desktop with a laptop as though their GPU classes were identical.
  4. Match test conditions. For each benchmark, note the game and version, output and rendered resolution, quality preset, ray-tracing mode, upscaling method, and average and minimum frame rate if available.
  5. Compare the trade-offs, not only the peak number. An average frame rate obtained with upscaling or reduced settings is not directly equivalent to native 4K at a different preset. Compare image quality and the rendering method alongside performance.
  6. Check the display connection and features. If you plan to use high refresh rate, variable refresh rate or HDR, make sure the complete computer-to-display arrangement supports the feature you want. Apple’s stated output support applies to supported arrangements, not every possible display setup.
  7. Consider the computer’s non-gaming role. If the Mac Studio is also intended for demanding Mac work, that can affect the decision. If the machine is being bought mainly for games, prioritize game support and matched gaming performance instead.

If a review does not state a setting needed to make two results comparable, treat the comparison as incomplete rather than filling in the blank. That is particularly important when one result uses FSR and another explicitly omits upscaling, or when ray tracing differs. A small-looking difference in benchmark labels can correspond to a different workload and a different visual result.

Common comparison mistakes

Reading 4K/240Hz output as a 4K/240fps promise

A computer’s display-output specification describes the signal it can send in a supported configuration. Game rendering is a separate workload. A 240Hz-capable display can show a high-refresh desktop signal without any demanding game reaching 240fps. Check game-specific results for the exact system rather than inferring a frame rate from the monitor specification.

Treating Apple’s generational graphics claim as a PC comparison

Apple’s up-to-1.8-times claim compares the stated M5 generation with the prior generation under Apple’s conditions. It does not identify an equivalent PC GPU, a game, or a 4K frame rate. It can describe Apple’s own product claim, but it cannot settle the Mac-versus-PC gaming question.

Comparing results with different upscaling settings

Upscaling can change both performance and image quality. A result with FSR enabled should not be presented as a direct match for a raw result that omits upscaling. Note the method and mode beside the frame rate, and avoid implying that the output resolution is necessarily the render resolution.

Generalizing from Cyberpunk 2077 to every game

One game’s engine, Mac support, graphics options and test configuration do not represent every title. The TechRadar result is evidence about its specific 2025 M3 Ultra system and Cyberpunk 2077 setup; it is not a guarantee for other games or for the current M5 models.

Using a laptop result to stand in for a desktop PC

Tom’s Guide’s cited Windows comparison covers gaming laptops, and its raw Windows results omit upscaling. It is useful context for those tested systems, not a benchmark for every gaming desktop or a matched comparison against an M5 Mac Studio.

Verdict

If your principal goal is 4K gaming, choose a gaming PC as the more practical starting point, then select and verify the exact GPU against the games and settings you care about. Choose a Mac Studio when its Mac-focused capabilities are important for other work and the particular games you want are supported; regard gaming performance as title- and configuration-dependent. The evidence supports neither a fixed PC-versus-Mac performance ratio nor a claim that the Mac Studio’s 4K/240Hz output means 4K gaming at 240fps.
