If an Android app starts crashing, will not open, or stops responding after a system update, start by restarting the phone and installing available Android and app updates. Then troubleshoot the affected app, beginning with steps that do not erase its saved data. The timing alone does not establish that the Android update caused the problem; the exact cause depends on the app, device, Android version, and symptoms.
First, identify what is failing
Note whether the problem affects one app or the phone more broadly. Google’s guidance treats these as distinct cases: an isolated app problem calls for app-level troubleshooting, while phone-wide crashes or restarts may require device-level diagnosis.

- Crashing: the app closes unexpectedly.
- Won’t open: the app fails to launch or gets stuck while starting.
- Won’t respond: the app opens but freezes or stops responding.
- Several apps or the phone itself are unstable: investigate the device as well as any individual app.
Settings names and paths vary by phone manufacturer and Android version. Use your device’s Settings search if the labels below do not match what you see.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).

- Restart the phone. Use the normal power menu to restart, then open the app again.
- Install available Android and app updates. Check your phone’s Settings for a system update. In Google Play, open the affected app’s listing and update it if an update is available. Menu names differ among devices.
- Force-stop the affected app. Open Settings, find the app in the installed-apps list, and choose Force stop. Reopen the app and test it.
- Clear the app’s cache. From the app’s Settings page, open its storage options and choose Clear cache. This is different from clearing the app’s data. If the problem persists, consider the data-clearing step below only after checking your backup or sync.
- Check date and time. In Settings, make sure the device is set to use the correct date and time, then reopen the app.
- Consider clearing app data or reinstalling only after protecting saved information. Clearing data can remove information saved by the app. Uninstalling can also erase app data. First confirm that important information is backed up or synced and that you can restore or sign back into the app. Then, if appropriate, clear the app’s data from its storage settings or uninstall and reinstall it through Google Play. Neither step is guaranteed to fix the problem.
Google’s installed-app instructions describe this general sequence and note that some steps apply only to Android 8.1 and later. If your menus differ or a step is unavailable, consult your phone maker’s instructions.
Check whether the app is compatible with your device
An app that is unavailable or marked incompatible is a different problem from an installed app that crashes. Google Play says compatibility can depend on factors such as Android version, screen size, location, and other device-targeting choices, and it can change over time. The Play Store shows apps compatible with the device you are using. For details about a particular app’s supported devices or Android versions, contact its developer.

Google Play’s target API-level rules concern app developers and the availability of some older apps to new users on newer Android devices. Those rules are not a diagnosis or a user-side fix for an app that is already installed and crashing.

If more than one app or the phone is unstable
Check available storage
Google says an Android phone may begin having problems when less than 10% of its storage is free. Check your device’s storage settings and, if space is low, remove items you no longer need or use the phone’s storage-management options. This is a general device check, not proof that low storage caused a particular app to crash.

Use safe mode to isolate downloaded apps
If the phone itself keeps restarting or crashing, safe mode temporarily turns off downloaded apps so you can check whether one may be involved. The method for entering safe mode varies by manufacturer; follow the instructions for your exact phone model.
- Start the phone in safe mode using the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Check whether the phone-wide problem continues while downloaded apps are disabled.
- If the problem disappears, restart normally and remove recently downloaded apps one at a time. Check the phone after each removal to see whether the problem returns.
Safe mode is for isolating downloaded apps when the device is unstable; it is not a substitute for checking compatibility or contacting the developer when just one app fails.

Choose the right support—and avoid premature resets
If other apps work and only one app is affected, Google’s advice is direct: “If you have trouble with one app but can use other apps without a problem, contact the app developer.” Use the developer’s support contact from the app’s Google Play listing or its official support channel.

Don’t treat Google Play services as the Play Store
Google Play services is a separate Android component that helps apps connect to Google services; it is not the Google Play Store app. Clearing Google Play services storage is not an early general fix for one app crashing. Google warns that clearing that storage can remove information such as passwords and payment-related cards, and recommends trying other troubleshooting options first.
