A label can tell you what a dupe’s maker discloses, who is responsible for it, and how to use or care for it. It cannot certify that a cosmetic is safe for you or independently prove a garment’s actual fiber mix. In the United States, check cosmetics for an ingredient declaration and basic product details; check covered garments for fiber content, country of origin, business identity, and care instructions.
What a label check can—and cannot—tell you
Use the label to compare disclosed information, not to decide that two products are equivalent. Similar ingredient or fiber names do not establish equal safety, quality, performance, or authenticity. A label is also not an independent verification of what is in the container or garment.

The rules below concern US cosmetic and textile labeling. Requirements vary by product category, and these checks do not establish the rules in other countries. A particular product’s category, market, label, and seller matter.
How to check a beauty dupe
Find the ingredient declaration and product details
For a US retail cosmetic, look for an ingredient declaration on the package. FDA says the declaration must be conspicuous and ingredients are generally listed in descending order of predominance. Also look for the product’s identity, net quantity, and the name and place of business of the firm marketing it; the label may identify a manufacturer, packer, or distributor. A distributor relationship may be indicated with wording such as “Distributed by.” FDA’s Cosmetics Labeling Guide describes these requirements and exceptions.

- FIND THE PERSONAL CARE INGREDIENTS THAT MAY BE CAUSING YOUR SENSITIVITY SYMPTOMS. Your skincare, beauty, and hygiene products are all absorbed through your skin. If these items have a negative interaction with the surface of your body, it can trigger non-allergy related symptoms like acne, fatigue, headaches, and dandruff.
- TESTS 275 BEAUTY, SKINCARE & GROOMING PRODUCT INGREDIENTS. This sensitivity test checks for stressors found in your skincare, haircare, makeup, fragrances, deodorants, dental hygiene products, feminine hygiene items, beauty tools, body art products, and bath & body essentials.
- 3-STEP TESTING PROCESS DONE FROM HOME. 1) Register your hair analysis test online or in the 5Strands app. 2) Collect 10–15 strands of hair, no root required. 3) Mail your sample to our lab with the included prepaid shipping materials. Once received, your results are sent to the registered email and mobile app dashboard within 4 days.
- USE YOUR RESULTS TO MAKE AN ELIMINATION PLAN. Your sensitivity test results categories each item into 4 severity levels, giving you a clear idea of which ones to keep in your beauty routine, reduce, or avoid. This gives your body the space it needs to heal, reset, and alleviate skin irritation or neural symptoms.
- 3RD PARTY VALIDATED & CERTIFIED U.S. LAB. Every hair sample is analyzed twice for accuracy and reliability. Independent studies have verified the effectiveness of our hair-based intolerance and sensitivity testing, making 5Strands the only third-party studied provider in this category.
Imported cosmetics require English country-of-origin marking, according to FDA’s Summary of Cosmetics Labeling Requirements. Look for warnings and directions when the product could be hazardous if misused; applicable warnings must be prominent and conspicuous.
Read ingredient order cautiously
Ingredient order is a clue, not a concentration chart. Ingredients present at 1% or less may be listed without regard to predominance, and color additives follow separate ordering rules. Some accepted confidential ingredients may also be withheld from individual naming. FDA explains that a fragrance compound may appear simply as “fragrance,” so the label may not identify each fragrance component.

- Test Before You Treat: Pelvana vaginal pH test strips provide a simple, at-home solution to identify common health concerns like bacterial vaginosis (BV) and yeast infections. Empower yourself to make informed decisions before seeking treatment.
- Accurate Results: Pelvana’s vaginal pH tester delivers precise results. Ensure that you check the color change exactly 30 seconds after testing, as the chemicals on the test pad will continue to react and change the color, making results after 30 seconds invalid.
- How to Test: Pelvana’s at-home yeast infection test kit is easy to use. The test pad on the pH test strips should be yellow; this means it is fresh and ready to test. Collect a sample of vaginal fluid with a cotton swab, wet the test pad, and wait exactly 30 seconds.
- Test Results: Compare the color result on the test pad to the pH color chart. Your vaginal pH level will either be normal or abnormal. Scan the QR code to match your color result to the vaginal symptoms you are experiencing in the common vaginal infections chart.
- Know When Not to Test: Pelvana vaginal pH test strips are not intended for use if you are experiencing menopause or perimenopausal symptoms without hormone therapy, or if you are menstruating or experiencing vaginal bleeding, as these factors may skew results.
Do not treat disclosure as a safety guarantee
FDA says US law does not require cosmetic manufacturers to test products for safety before marketing, while urging them to conduct appropriate tests to substantiate safety. A printed ingredient list therefore helps you see what is disclosed; it does not amount to FDA safety approval, an independent lab result, or an assessment of your personal allergies. A label’s lack of an expiration date is not, by itself, evidence of a violation: FDA says US law does not require expiration dates on cosmetic labels, though firms remain responsible for product safety.

FDA says products intended to affect body structure or function, or to treat or prevent disease, may be regulated as drugs as well as cosmetics. Claims of that kind raise a different regulatory question from an ordinary cosmetic claim.

Inspect the garment label
For most covered textile and wool products, the FTC says the label must list fiber content, country of origin, and the identity of the manufacturer or another responsible business. Covered textile labels give generic fiber names and percentages by weight. Garments covered by the Care Labeling Rule also need care instructions. See the FTC’s Threading Your Way Through the Labeling Requirements Under the Textile and Wool Acts and its consumer overview, Clothing and Textiles.
These requirements have exceptions and category-specific rules. Do not assume that a bag, shoe, accessory, or decorative detail follows the same labeling regime as a covered garment.

Understand an RN and the limits of visual checks
A Registered Identification Number (RN) issued by the FTC may appear instead of a company name in qualifying textile-labeling contexts. An RN in place of a familiar brand name is not, on its own, proof that an item is counterfeit or unsafe. You can compare the declared fiber names and percentages with a reference item, but the available labeling guidance does not establish that sight or a simple home test can verify the garment’s true fiber mix. If the label seems inconsistent with the seller’s claims, ask the seller or responsible business for clarification rather than treating the discrepancy as proof of fraud.

| What to compare | Beauty dupe | Fashion dupe |
|---|---|---|
| Composition | Ingredient names and their listed order; ordering exceptions mean the final ingredients are not a precise concentration ranking. | Generic fiber names and percentages by weight where required. |
| Responsible business and origin | Marketing firm’s name and place of business; English country-of-origin marking for imported cosmetics. | Responsible business identity and country of origin for most covered textile and wool products; a qualifying RN may appear instead of a company name. |
| Use information | Applicable warnings and directions. | Care instructions for covered garments under the Care Labeling Rule. |
| What the label does not establish | Complete naming of every formula component, personal suitability, or independently verified safety. | Independent verification of the actual fiber mix, or proof of authenticity, quality, or performance. |
If a seller cannot answer a specific question about composition, treat that as missing information—not as proof of either danger or safety. For cosmetics, a disclosed formula can still omit individual fragrance components or accepted confidential ingredients. For garments, a composition declaration is not itself a consumer test of the material.
