Those message types rely on different settings and services, so the right fix depends on what is failing.
First, narrow down what is failing
Note whether you can send, receive, or do neither; whether the issue affects all conversations or one contact; and whether it involves plain texts, picture or group messages, or RCS chats. Google’s troubleshooting guidance is for Google Messages. Menu names and settings in other messaging apps can differ.

- SMS: Ordinary text messaging. Check carrier support, your plan or credit, SIM, and signal.
- MMS: Picture and some group messaging. Check your data connection, APN settings, and group-message configuration.
- RCS: Chat features that depend on device, carrier, and regional support. Check RCS status, especially after a device or messaging-app change.

Google recommends checking these items in Google Messages. Your phone maker’s Android settings may use different labels or locations.

- Update Google Messages. Open the Play Store, find Google Messages, and install an available update. Google’s advice is: “Make sure that you have the most updated version of Google Messages.”
- Check the SIM. Make sure a SIM is inserted correctly. If the phone cannot use its SIM or cellular service, messaging may fail.
- Set the default texting app. In Android settings, locate the default apps or SMS app setting and select Google Messages. The exact path varies by device.
- Check service and plan support. Confirm with your carrier that your plan or credit covers the affected service and that SMS, MMS, or RCS is supported for your device and account.
- Check signal and airplane mode. Make sure the phone has signal and airplane mode is off.
If you recently moved your number from an iPhone, check that iMessage has been deactivated for that number. If you changed messaging apps and then stopped receiving messages, Google says RCS chats may need to be turned off.
If only one contact is affected
When other conversations work, check the recipient details before changing broader phone settings.

- Verify the phone number, including the country code if applicable.
- Check whether the contact is blocked.
- Google also recommends deleting and adding the contact again.

MMS may need a working data connection, so check that the phone can connect to mobile data. Google also recommends restoring APN settings to their defaults in the phone’s Settings app. The steps and labels vary by Android device and carrier; use your carrier’s instructions if you need help with APNs.

Check how group messages are handled
If replies to a group are arriving in separate conversations instead of one group thread, review the group-messaging option in Google Messages. Google’s guidance describes choosing group MMS to keep replies in one group conversation. The setting label may differ by app version.
Do not assume Wi-Fi alone will handle MMS or that APN values are the same for every carrier. If the data connection and settings appear correct but MMS still fails, ask your carrier whether MMS is enabled and provisioned for your account.

If RCS stopped working after a phone or app change
RCS is not interchangeable with SMS: availability depends on carrier, device, and region. Check that your carrier supports RCS and review the RCS chat state in Google Messages. Google notes that RCS may need to be turned off after changing messaging apps.
If you changed devices and no longer have the old phone—or it was lost or stolen—Google provides a page to remotely deactivate RCS chat. Google warns that you will be removed from RCS group chats if RCS is not turned back on within 30 days. Turning off RCS is not a guaranteed fix for an underlying SMS or carrier-service problem.

When to contact your carrier or phone maker
Contact your carrier if SMS or MMS still fails after the relevant checks, or if the cause may be your plan, service, carrier support, or SIM provisioning. If the issue appears limited to one phone’s settings or a manufacturer-specific feature, consult that phone maker’s support guidance. Android menus and carrier requirements differ, so there is no single settings path or escalation process that applies to every phone.
