Soak stuck food for 15–20 minutes; for burnt-on residue, simmer water with baking soda for about 8–10 minutes, let it cool, then wipe gently. Persistent stains may need a baking soda paste or a cookware cleaner made for enameled cast iron. Rinse and dry thoroughly.
Clean Le Creuset enameled cast iron step by step
- Let it cool completely. Wait until the cookware reaches room temperature before washing. Pouring cold water into a hot pot can cause thermal shock and damage the enamel. See Le Creuset’s Care and Use guidance.
- Wash gently. Use warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft natural or nylon sponge or brush. Avoid metal sponges, abrasive utensils, and harsh abrasive cleaners, which can scratch the enamel.
- Soak stuck-on food. Fill the pot with warm, soapy water and leave it to soak for 15–20 minutes, then loosen the food with a soft sponge.
- Simmer burnt-on residue. Add one or two tablespoons of baking soda to warm water in the pot and bring it to a simmer for about 8–10 minutes. Let the pot and liquid cool, drain, then remove the softened food with a soft sponge and dish soap. Rinse and dry thoroughly. These timings are Le Creuset’s procedure instructions, not results from a comparative cleaning test. The method appears in its guide to caring for and cleaning enameled cast iron.
Choose a method for stains or residue
| What you are cleaning | What to try | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Loose food or light residue | Warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft sponge | Start with the gentlest method; avoid abrasive tools. |
| Stuck-on food | Soak in warm, soapy water for 15–20 minutes | Use a soft sponge to lift the loosened residue. |
| Burnt-on food | Simmer warm water with one or two tablespoons of baking soda for about 8–10 minutes | Cool before draining and wiping; do not scrub with metal. |
| Persistent stain or discoloration | Try a baking soda-and-water paste, Bar Keepers Friend, or Le Creuset Pots and Pans Cleaner | Follow the product directions and use a non-abrasive tool. Le Creuset does not establish one option as universally superior. |
Use a cleaner only if household methods are not enough
Le Creuset lists baking soda paste, Bar Keepers Friend, and its dedicated cleaner as options for persistent stains. Its Pots and Pans Cleaner is described for enameled cast iron and stainless steel, including heat stains, discoloration, and everyday buildup. It is optional; follow its directions and do not use abrasive pads.

- Use low or medium heat for most cooking. Le Creuset says overheating is a common reason food sticks; heated oil or fat exposed to high temperatures can also leave sticky residue. This is general manufacturer guidance, not a diagnosis of every mark.
- After washing, rinse and dry the cookware thoroughly. Le Creuset advises against storing it damp and recommends a dry storage place.
