If an Android game running on your Windows PC ignores your mouse or keyboard, first check whether that game supports PC input. For games played through Google Play Games on PC, the fix may be to adjust the game’s native PC controls or map keys to its on-screen touch controls. These instructions cover Google Play Games on PC; they do not establish how to configure a mouse and keyboard connected directly to an Android phone or tablet.
It helps to separate three possible causes: the game may not support the input you expect, a control may need to be mapped or repositioned, or the Google Play Games client or PC setup may be having a problem. Work through those checks in that order. A working mouse and keyboard cannot add support that a game does not provide, but the correct settings can make touch-oriented games easier to play on a PC.

Check whether the game supports mouse and keyboard
Android games can be designed around touch input, and support for mouse and keyboard on a PC varies by title. In Google Play Games on PC, check the game’s details page for its compatibility label before changing settings. A label describes Google’s compatibility assessment, not necessarily a fault with your peripherals.

These labels are not interchangeable. Untested does not mean that Google found a specific defect; it means the game has not been tested on PC and could still work. Unsupported means Google identified technical issues that may prevent correct operation. Not available is about whether the game can be played through the service on the current computer or catalog. In those last two cases, changing a key assignment is unlikely to address the underlying limitation.

Google’s Playable threshold is a useful baseline, but read the wording carefully: mouse and/or keyboard support does not promise that both devices control every action. A game may respond to keyboard mappings while a particular action remains touch-only, for example. Check the controls exposed by that title rather than assuming the badge means every expected PC command is available.
Google cautions that a compatibility badge reflects a one-time test. It may not reflect the latest game version or every hardware configuration, so a label is a useful first diagnostic, not a guarantee of how the game will behave on your PC. If a game appears to have stopped responding after an update, the badge alone cannot establish whether a newer game version or a specific hardware setup caused the change.
Use the right control settings for the game
There are two different control paths. Games with optimized PC controls use the game’s Game Controls settings. For a touch-oriented game without optimized PC controls, the Controls Editor can map keyboard keys to on-screen touch targets and virtual joysticks. The editor is unavailable for games that already have optimized PC controls.

If the game is optimized for PC, use its native Game Controls settings. If it is an unoptimized, touch-oriented game, remapping can translate keyboard presses into touches at the positions you choose. The two approaches are alternatives for different control setups, not two editors that must both be enabled.
For a game with optimized PC controls
- Open the game in Google Play Games on PC.
- Open the game’s Game Controls settings.
- Review and change the mappings the game makes available there, then return to the game and test the actions you changed.
If a needed action does not appear among the available settings, the documented Controls Editor is not a substitute for the optimized controls in that game. The available mappings depend on the title.
When testing, change one relevant setting at a time and try the affected action again. This makes it easier to tell whether a mapping change helped. If the game has a control option for the missing action, use the option exposed by the title; the documented PC settings do not establish a universal way to add actions that the game itself has not made available.

For an unoptimized, touch-oriented game
- Open the game. If it is in windowed mode, click Game Controls on the left side of the game window.
- If it is fullscreen, press Shift + Tab, then select Remap controls.
- Select Edit to add controls. Place each mapping over the corresponding on-screen touch target in the game.
- Assign keyboard keys to touch buttons or, where appropriate, to a virtual joystick.
- Return to gameplay and test each mapped action. If a key triggers the wrong action or movement does not follow the game’s control area, reopen the editor and adjust the placement or assignment.
Placement is important because a mapping targets a location on the game screen. Before assigning a key, identify the touch button or joystick area that performs the action you want. Put the mapping over that target, then test it in play. If the wrong on-screen action fires, the key may be assigned to the wrong target; if a joystick mapping does not produce the expected movement, revisit its placement and assignment.
This method translates keyboard input into touches at locations on the game screen. It can help with games whose on-screen buttons or joystick respond to touch, but the source instructions do not establish a universal layout or a working mapping for every game. The controls shown in one title may not fit another. A mapping that makes sense for one screen layout should not be assumed to work in another title or after the on-screen targets change.
The editor is most relevant when the game already provides touch targets for the action you need. It does not guarantee that a pointer will behave like a finger for every gesture, nor does it promise a suitable control for every action in a touch-first game. If no corresponding button or joystick area appears in the game, there may be nothing appropriate to map for that action.
Try the remapping controls available in your client
Google Play Games release notes describe additional remapping options introduced at different times. They apply to supported games; their presence does not mean every title can use every control.

For fullscreen games, open Shift + Tab → Remap controls to inspect supported remapping options. If a listed control is absent, do not assume a client fault: the feature may not apply to that game.
The release-note dates describe when Google added these types of controls, not a promise that every game will show them. For example, the Zoom control simulates pinch-to-zoom with the mouse scroll wheel, but it is only useful in a supported game that exposes that option. Likewise, the Aim and shoot control is for supported games; its absence from a particular title does not by itself show that your mouse is broken.

Use the tool that matches the action. Keyboard-to-virtual-button or joystick mappings address on-screen touch controls; Aim and shoot and Zoom are distinct remapping options when available. If the game does not expose the needed option, the listed additions do not establish a way to force it on.
Separate a mapping problem from a PC setup problem
If controls, the editor, or the client itself are malfunctioning, check the PC and client before rebuilding a layout. Google Play Games on PC lists the following minimum requirements. Meeting them can address setup problems, but cannot add support to a game that lacks it.

These are minimum PC requirements for the service, not a list of extra peripherals to buy or a guarantee that every title will work. The storage requirement specifies an SSD with 10 GB free; the processor requirement is four physical cores, not merely four logical threads. Use the figures as a setup check if the client or game is failing to run, rather than as a proposed cure for one missing game control.

During setup, Windows Hypervisor Platform may need to be enabled, followed by a restart. Google also says CPU virtualization in the BIOS is needed for many catalog games. If the setup process asks you to turn on Windows Hypervisor Platform, follow that prompt and restart when asked. If virtualization is disabled in BIOS, consult the PC or motherboard maker’s instructions for enabling it; the exact interface varies by device.
Virtualization matters when the client or a game cannot run correctly, but it is not a mouse-and-keyboard mapping feature. If the PC meets the listed requirements and the game launches normally while only specific inputs fail, return to the compatibility label and the game’s control settings.
Restart and update the client
- Exit Google Play Games on PC, then open it again and retry the game.
- Check for client updates if the problem continues.
- If an update fails, Google lists reinstalling the client as a next step.
- If a game is unavailable or will not run, check whether PC compatibility conditions are involved; Google identifies processor restrictions and outdated graphics drivers as possible causes of game availability problems.
These steps address client or PC setup problems. They do not establish that a game is compatible or create controls the game does not expose. If the client is otherwise working and only one game action fails, return to that game’s label and controls rather than treating reinstalling as the default fix.

Reinstalling is specifically a next step when updates fail, not the first response to every input issue. Begin with a restart and update check. If the game is unavailable or will not run, then PC compatibility conditions such as processor restrictions or outdated graphics drivers may be relevant; those are different symptoms from a single missing key mapping.

For a quick diagnosis, first note whether the whole client or game fails, or whether the game runs but one input is missing. A game that does not launch points toward availability, compatibility, or PC setup checks. A game that launches and responds to some controls points more strongly toward its label, native mappings, or a touch-control remap. These are diagnostic directions, not guarantees about the cause.
Next, match the control method to the game’s setup. An optimized title uses Game Controls. An unoptimized touch-oriented title may use Remap controls to place keyboard mappings over touch targets. If the needed mapping or action is not offered, changing unrelated settings or replacing hardware is unlikely to supply it.
Know when remapping will not fix the problem
Remapping is useful when the game exposes on-screen touch controls that can be targeted by the editor. It is not a general-purpose way to make every touch-first game behave like a PC game. If the game lacks suitable on-screen controls to map, or Google marks it Unsupported, the official guidance does not promise a workaround. Contact the game’s support channel for title-specific options, or choose a game marked Optimized or Playable.
A replacement keyboard or mouse is not a solution to absent game mappings. Consider replacing a peripheral only if it is not functioning with the PC elsewhere; the troubleshooting steps for game-level input support are the compatibility check and the appropriate control settings.
If you are considering a basic wired keyboard and mouse because you do not have functioning PC input devices, treat them as ordinary input hardware, not as a compatibility upgrade. Google Play Games uses keyboard and mouse as input methods, but the controls available in a particular game remain a game and client matter. Buying different peripherals will not turn an Unsupported title into a supported one or create a missing touch target.
