After an Android update, first give the phone time to finish setup, then check battery use by app, update apps and Android, restart, and use safe mode to test for a downloaded app. Google’s advice to wait a few days and then contact support applies specifically to Pixel phones; other Android devices can differ by maker and model.
Why battery drain can rise after an update
On Pixel phones, Google says a little extra drain after a software update can be normal while the phone downloads and optimizes new software. Google recommends contacting support if unusual drain continues after a few days. This is Pixel-specific guidance, not a guaranteed recovery period for every Android phone, and it does not establish that severe heat or persistent drain is harmless. Adaptive Battery learns from recent usage. Google says a new device setup or factory reset can take up to a few weeks for that optimization to take full effect; that is not a promise that post-update drain will resolve in that time. Adaptive Battery may reduce performance or delay notifications. Leave Adaptive Battery and battery optimization enabled unless you have a specific reason to change them. Check which apps or activities are using power
Review battery use on Pixel
Open Settings → Battery → Battery usage, then look at usage by app. Names and locations can vary with Android version. Check for an app with unusually high background use; where appropriate, adjust its background usage or restore battery optimization. Avoid force-stopping or uninstalling essential system services such as Google Play services. On Pixel 6 and later, Google says Battery diagnostics includes a “Battery draining too quickly” check. Reduce avoidable consumption
On Android phones generally, lowering screen brightness, shortening screen timeout, limiting unnecessary location or connectivity use, and restricting an app with high use can reduce consumption. Adaptive Battery is available on supported devices. These measures can extend battery life, but by themselves they do not identify why drain suddenly changed. Google Android battery troubleshooting
Restart, then install available updates
- Restart the phone. Use the power menu for your model.
- Check for an Android system update. Open Settings and look for the system or software update option; the exact path varies by manufacturer and Android version.
- Update apps. Open Google Play, go to your profile, and check for app updates. Install available updates, then monitor whether battery use changes.

Use safe mode to test downloaded apps
Safe mode temporarily disables downloaded apps. If the drain improves in safe mode, a downloaded app is a likely cause, though that does not prove the app is defective or that the update caused the problem. The way to enter safe mode varies by phone, so follow the device maker’s instructions. Google’s Android safe mode troubleshooting
- Restart into safe mode using the instructions for your phone.
- Use the phone for a while under similar conditions and see whether the drain changes.
- If battery life improves, restart normally and remove recently downloaded apps one at a time, checking after each removal.
When to seek support—and when to reset
If the steps above do not help, contact the phone manufacturer or carrier for model-specific troubleshooting. Pixel owners can also run Battery diagnostics on supported models; Google advises Pixel users to contact support if unusual drain persists after a few days. The available evidence does not identify one cause for all Android phones, so persistent symptoms need device-specific assessment.

Treat a factory reset as a last resort, not an early battery fix. Google warns that it removes device data and uninstalls apps and their associated data.
