Start by identifying whether Android Auto is connected by USB or wirelessly, then check compatibility, the connection and the settings in that order. A phone charging over USB does not prove that the car’s data connection is working, and not every USB-equipped vehicle supports Android Auto. Keep the car safely parked before changing settings or capturing a bug report.
First, identify the connection and confirm compatibility
Before changing settings, note whether you use a wired or wireless connection, whether Android Auto worked previously, whether the problem occurs in one vehicle or several, and whether it began after a phone or receiver update. These details help distinguish a connection problem from a compatibility or software issue.

- Check the vehicle maker’s compatibility information or the aftermarket receiver maker’s documentation. A USB port alone does not mean the vehicle supports Android Auto.
- Google lists Android 9.0 (Pie) or higher and an active data plan among the requirements for wired Android Auto. Wireless projection has additional phone, 5 GHz Wi-Fi and vehicle compatibility requirements. Check Google’s current requirements and confirm support for your particular phone, vehicle and region.
- Verify Android Auto is enabled in the infotainment system; settings and names vary by vehicle.
Google advises setting up Android Auto while the vehicle is in Park and the infotainment system is on. Do not troubleshoot through a phone while driving.
If Android Auto disconnects over USB
Check charging, cable and ports
See whether the phone charges when plugged in, but do not treat charging as proof that the connection can transfer data. Android Auto needs a working USB data link. Inspect the phone port, cable and vehicle USB port for debris or visible damage. If you find debris, avoid inserting anything that could damage the port.

Try a known-good, high-quality USB data cable shorter than 1 metre (3 feet), connected directly without a hub or extension. Check that its connectors fit your phone and vehicle and that it supports data transfer, not just charging. Google suggests using a manufacturer-tested cable and points to USB-IF certification as a selection cue in its wired connection troubleshooting guidance. Treat a cable swap as a test, not a guaranteed fix.
Google’s cable advice applies to wired Android Auto: if it worked before and no longer does, replacing the USB cable is likely to help. It does not diagnose wireless failures.
Unlock the phone and check vehicle settings
Unlock the phone when connecting and follow any prompts on the phone or car display. Confirm Android Auto is enabled in the infotainment settings, then restart the infotainment system. If you use an aftermarket head unit, check its manufacturer’s support site for firmware information.
If the phone has Advanced Protection Mode USB Protection enabled, check that setting too: Android Auto Team Community guidance says a USB-protected connection will not start Android Auto while the device is locked. That behavior can look like a cable fault even when the cable is not the cause.

If wireless Android Auto will not connect or stay connected
First confirm that both the phone and vehicle or receiver support wireless Android Auto. For the first connection, pair the phone and car over Bluetooth. Keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Location Services enabled while completing setup, as described in Google’s setup instructions. After pairing, Android Auto may start automatically or you may need to tap its icon on the car display.
Google’s setup guidance does not establish one universal setting change that fixes every intermittent wireless disconnection. Avoid applying wired-cable advice to a wireless problem; if pairing completes but the connection still drops, record when it happens and move on to the software and escalation checks below.

Android Auto is integrated into supported phones for car-display use; Google says you do not need to download a separate Android Auto app. Keep the phone’s relevant software up to date, but bear in mind that menu names and update steps differ by manufacturer and Android version.

When the basic checks do not solve it
Contact the vehicle maker if compatibility or infotainment behavior is uncertain, or the phone manufacturer for device-specific support. If you report the issue to Google, include enough detail to distinguish a phone, vehicle, cable or software problem:
- Phone make and model, Android version and build
- Android Auto and Google Play services versions
- Vehicle or head-unit make and model
- Wired or wireless connection, the exact error, how often it occurs and when it began
- Whether the problem occurs with another compatible vehicle or phone, if you have safely tested that
Follow Google’s bug-report instructions. Keep the Android Auto connection active while capturing and submitting the report; Google warns that key information may be lost if the connection ends before the process finishes. Do this only while safely parked.
