Yes. An unstable state can help with quantum computing when its decay or interaction with the environment is controlled and useful for a specific task—such as preparing a state, measuring it, or protecting information for a workable interval. Uncontrolled decay and decoherence remain sources of error.
What does “unstable” mean in a quantum system?
The word can describe several different situations. A metastable state lasts for a relatively long time before relaxing. An excited energy level has a finite lifetime. An open quantum system interacts with its surroundings, which can change its state through processes such as dissipation and measurement. These are related, but they are not interchangeable.

The practical question is whether the information a computation needs remains accessible and controllable for the relevant operation. A short-lived state is not automatically useful; its lifetime and behavior must fit the task.

Dissipation is the loss of energy or information through interaction with an environment. Uncontrolled dissipation can disrupt a computation, but deliberately designed dissipation can perform useful work: measurement, cooling, resetting, state preparation, or stabilization. It can also help control dynamics and enforce constraints.

In their 2022 review, Engineered dissipation for quantum information science, Patrick M. Harrington, Erich J. Mueller, and Kater W. Murch discuss applications in quantum error correction, sensing, and simulation. Their central distinction is between harmful background noise and an engineered channel chosen to serve a defined purpose. Making dissipation useful does not make other noise harmless.
What have experiments shown with metastable states?
Diamond nuclear-spin readout
A 2025 Nature Communications experiment, reported in Observation of metastability in open quantum dynamics of a solid-state system, observed metastability in the discrete-time evolution of a nuclear spin in diamond. The researchers used sequential Ramsey interferometry measurements of a nearby nitrogen-vacancy electron spin. They reported metastable nuclear-spin polarization that enabled high-fidelity single-shot readout, along with a nuclear-spin relaxation time greater than 10 seconds at room temperature.

That figure describes relaxation in this particular experimental system. It is not a general coherence time for quantum processors, nor a performance guarantee for other devices.
Metastable ytterbium-171 qubit
A 2026 Nature Physics report demonstrated quantum error-correcting codes and logical-qubit circuits using a metastable ytterbium-171 nuclear-spin qubit. The researchers describe its noise as biased toward erasure errors, which can be identified separately from syndrome information. They also report suppressing dephasing during coherent transport and implementing entangling gates that retained high fidelity despite gate-beam inhomogeneity or pointing errors.
These are findings about that neutral-atom platform and its studied operations. They should not be conflated with the diamond readout experiment: the systems and tasks differ.
Can an excited state be used in quantum annealing?
A 2020 proposal by Hayato Goto and Taro Kanao takes a different approach. In a network of driven Kerr-nonlinear parametric oscillators, or KPOs, selected oscillator detunings make the stable vacuum act as an effective excited energy eigenstate of the driven system. The method uses a nonadiabatic transition at an energy-gap closing as part of an excited-state quantum-annealing route to combinatorial optimization.
Rank #4
The proposal’s numerical simulations used four oscillators. In some simulated instances, the approach improved on ground-state annealing; the authors also found it more robust to dissipation than initializing a physical one-photon excited state. The vacuum is functioning as an effective excited state in the driven system—it is not a physically populated one-photon starting state.
This is a small-system simulation result, not an experimental demonstration or evidence of a commercial speedup. In Quantum annealing using vacuum states as effective excited states of driven systems, the authors state that they used only four KPOs in simulations and leave whether the advantage persists at larger oscillator counts as future work.

How do the examples differ?
| Approach | Computational role | Evidence described | Key qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engineered dissipation | Measurement, preparation, stabilization, and control | 2022 review covering quantum information applications | A controlled channel can be useful; uncontrolled dissipation remains harmful. |
| Metastable diamond nuclear spin | Single-shot readout | 2025 experiment | The reported relaxation time applies to the specific room-temperature diamond system. |
| Metastable ytterbium-171 nuclear-spin qubit | Error correction and logical-qubit circuits | 2026 experimental report | Noise characteristics and gate results are platform-specific. |
| Vacuum as an effective excited state in KPOs | Proposed route to combinatorial optimization by quantum annealing | 2020 numerical simulations | Four oscillators were simulated; scaling remains unestablished. |
These approaches do not share a common performance benchmark. To compare them meaningfully, consider the task, the time window in which information stays usable, the type and controllability of errors, the role of the environment, and whether evidence comes from theory, simulation, or experiment.
What still makes unstable states a challenge?
Finite lifetimes limit how long a state can be manipulated or used to store information. The 2022 article Limits on atomic qubit control from laser noise in npj Quantum Information identifies the finite upper-state lifetime as a fundamental limit to optical-qubit fidelities. Spontaneous emission and other uncontrolled decay therefore remain real constraints, even when a separate dissipative process is engineered for a useful purpose.
