Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf Android Auto can’t connect or stay connected, first identify whether you’re using USB or wireless, then check compatibility, the connection path, and the car’s infotainment system. The steps below help narrow down a failure without assuming every disconnect, delay, or audio glitch has the same cause. Troubleshoot only while parked.
Start with compatibility and connection type
Confirm whether your phone and vehicle support the mode you’re trying to use. A USB port by itself does not establish Android Auto compatibility; check your vehicle manual or ask the vehicle or head-unit maker if support is unclear.

- Wired: Google lists Android 9.0 or higher, an active data plan, a compatible car, and a high-quality USB cable as requirements.
- Wireless: Google lists a compatible phone with an active data plan and 5 GHz Wi-Fi support, plus a compatible car or stereo. Wireless setup uses Bluetooth pairing.
See Google’s Android Auto compatibility and setup guidance for current requirements and supported vehicles.
If Android Auto disconnects or won’t connect over USB
Check the cable and ports
- Park the vehicle, unlock the phone, and disconnect any USB hub or extension.
- Inspect the phone and vehicle USB ports for debris or damage. If cleaning is needed, follow the device or vehicle maker’s guidance; do not force anything into a port.
- Try a known-good, high-quality USB data cable under 1 metre (3 feet). A cable that charges a phone is not necessarily suitable for data. Google suggests a phone-manufacturer cable or an independent cable meeting USB-IF standards.
- If Android Auto worked reliably before and has stopped, try replacing the cable. Google’s troubleshooting guidance says that, in this specific situation, a replacement cable will likely fix the issue.
Avoid assuming the cable is the only possible cause: a port, phone, or infotainment setting can also be involved. Google’s USB troubleshooting steps include cable and connection checks.

Check the car’s settings
Confirm Android Auto is enabled in the infotainment system, then restart that system. Menu names and restart procedures vary by vehicle, so consult its manual. If you use an aftermarket receiver, check the receiver maker’s support information for firmware updates.
If wireless Android Auto disconnects or won’t connect
During setup, keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on, and follow the vehicle’s pairing instructions. The car should be in park with its infotainment system on. Wireless Android Auto uses Bluetooth for pairing; the phone also needs 5 GHz Wi-Fi support.
- Remove uncertainty about compatibility by checking that both the phone and vehicle support wireless Android Auto.
- With the vehicle parked, follow its instructions to pair the phone over Bluetooth and complete Android Auto setup.
- If the connection remains unreliable and both devices support it, try wired Android Auto. A difference between modes may help isolate where the symptom occurs, but it does not by itself prove the root cause.
Google’s setup instructions cover wireless pairing and device requirements.

Update software, then identify what is actually lagging
Update Android Auto and Google Play services through their official update channels. Google describes Android Auto as integrated into phones; you do not necessarily need to install a separate Android Auto app to use the car display. Follow Google’s Android Auto guidance for supported setup details.
“Lagging” can mean different things: a slow or frozen display, delayed navigation response, choppy audio, or a connection that drops. Note which symptom occurs and whether it happens on USB, wireless, or both. A historical Android Auto Team Community Specialist reply dated December 5, 2024, addressed a particular wireless audio-stuttering report and recommended Android Auto 13.2 or later at that time. That was version-specific guidance for that reported issue, not a current version recommendation or a general fix for all lag.
Use comparisons to narrow down the fault
If basic checks have not resolved the problem, compare setups one variable at a time while parked. These checks can narrow the possibilities but cannot establish a cause on their own.

- Important Compatibility Check - PLEASE READ: This adapter is ONLY compatible with cars equipped with Factory Wired CarPlay or Android Auto (Model Years 2016-2025). ❌ NOT compatible with BMW, Tesla, or vehicles without a wired system. For Android Users: Requires a phone running Android 11 or later with "Wireless Android Auto" enabled. Includes USB-A to USB-C adapter for wider port compatibility.
- If supported, compare wired and wireless operation.
- Check whether the problem affects connection, screen response, navigation, audio, or more than one of these.
- Try another compatible phone with the same car, if available.
- Try the same phone with another compatible car, if available.
For example, if one phone has trouble with the car on both connection modes, that comparison is useful information to include in a support request; it does not alone prove the phone is at fault.

If the problem persists after compatibility, cable or pairing, infotainment, and update checks, contact Google or the vehicle or head-unit maker. Include the phone model, Android version, Android Auto version, Google Play services version, connection type, vehicle or receiver make and model, country, and a concise description of the symptom.
Google’s Android Auto troubleshooting guidance explains where to find bug-report instructions. Reproduce the problem, then capture and submit the report promptly; Google’s instructions say to keep the phone connected until submission is complete. Community posts can describe individual fixes, but personal reports are not proof that the same cause applies to every setup.
Keep troubleshooting safe
Set up, pair, inspect, and change settings only while parked. Google’s setup guidance says the car should be in park and reminds drivers to pay attention to road conditions and obey applicable laws. Do not troubleshoot phone settings while driving.
