What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The right AI video generator is the one that can deliver your specific kind of video at an acceptable cost after retries—not necessarily the one with the lowest subscription price or the longest feature list. Start with the finished deliverable, match it to a tool’s workflow, then compare the cost of clips you can actually use.
How do I choose an AI video generator?
- Define the finished video. Decide whether you need a short social clip, product video, B-roll, storyboard, cinematic scene, presenter-led explainer, or a change to footage you already have. Adobe describes its video generator as supporting use cases such as social clips, product and marketing video, B-roll, motion graphics, storyboards, concept work, and cinematic scenes.
- Identify how you will make it. Establish whether you need text-to-video, image-to-video, video editing or stylization, generated dialogue or sound, reference controls, or a way to assemble and refine clips after generation.
- Set output requirements. Write down the target aspect ratio, clip duration, resolution, audio needs, file format, and any editing or collaboration requirements. Check the provider’s current limits for the specific model and plan you intend to use.
- Estimate usable output, not theoretical output. Compare plan credits with the cost of your chosen model, duration, resolution, audio setting, and editing mode. Budget for rerolls and check whether unused credits expire or roll over.
- Trial finalists with the same brief. Use the same prompt, source image, duration, and aspect ratio for each candidate. Track how often the result follows the brief, maintains consistent visuals and motion, includes acceptable audio, and needs another generation before it is usable.
- Check operational fit. Before paid or client work, review current terms for commercial use, ownership or license, privacy and training use, watermarks, content restrictions, retention, and availability in your region.
There is no defensible universal winner without knowing the job. A generator that excels at creating short shots may not be the best fit for editing existing footage, producing dialogue, or managing a team workflow.

Which AI video generator is best for my budget?
Compare tools by workflow first, then by the cost of accepted output. Model lists are not complete workflow comparisons: a service may offer generation, video editing or stylization, audio tools, and downstream production features as separate operations, each with different costs. Runway’s model documentation, for example, lists distinct operations and credit rates, while Adobe describes prompt- or image-based generation and a way to compare partner models.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

|---|---|---|
| Runway | Credit allowance, selected model’s rate, duration, retries, expiry, and whether the needed editing or audio operation has an additional cost. | Runway publishes plan allowances and model credit rates; see the figures below. Subscription prices are not stated in the cited credit guidance. |
| Adobe Firefly video generator | Prompt and image workflows, partner-model comparison, and whether its editing and export workflow fits your project. | Adobe lists social, marketing, B-roll, motion-graphics, storyboard, concept, and cinematic use cases. Exact current plan prices and video credit allowances are not established here. |
| Google AI video generation | Current plan terms in your region, available video tools, monthly allowance, and how the rest of the subscription bundle fits your work. | A retrieved Google One page showed older model-version information, so its displayed price and allowance should not be treated as current plan guidance. |
Do not treat the table as a quality ranking: comparable controlled results across providers are not established. Run the same brief through your finalists and judge the outputs against the requirements you set.

Runway credit examples
Runway’s official credit guide, accessed in 2026, lists the following consumer-plan allowances. The guide does not state the subscription prices, so credits alone cannot establish which plan is cheapest.
| Runway plan or use | Published credits | Renewal, expiry, or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 125 credits | One-time allowance; does not expire and does not refresh after use. |
| Standard | 625 credits | Monthly credits; expire at the billing date. |
| Pro | 2,250 credits | Monthly credits; expire at the billing date. |
| Unlimited | 2,250 credits | Monthly credits; expire at the billing date. |
| Max | 9,500 credits | Monthly credits. |
| Purchased Runway credits | Amount depends on purchase | Runway says purchased credits do not expire. |
Runway’s official model table, accessed in 2026, lists Gen-4.5 at 12 credits per generated second. That works out to 60 credits for a five-second generation or 120 credits for a 10-second generation, before additional workflow costs. Those are credit calculations, not a finished-video price: retries and other operations can increase the total.
Runway’s Standard-plan documentation also gives an example of 31 images with Gemini 3 Pro (1K) for 620 credits. Treat that as Runway’s allocation example, not an independent measure of image quality or value.

Runway’s Developer API is a separate credit system from its consumer plans. Its API documentation lists a rate of $0.01 per API credit; do not multiply consumer subscription credits by that API rate to estimate subscription value.
How much does AI video generation cost per clip?
There is no single per-clip figure that applies across models and providers. The calculation depends on the exact generation settings, additional editing or audio operations, plan cost, and the number of attempts needed to get a clip you can use. A market-wide average cost per finished minute is not established by the available evidence.
Use this calculation for each candidate:
Effective cost per accepted clip = (allocated plan cost for the period + any relevant top-ups) ÷ number of clips accepted for use during that period.

- Edit your videos and pictures to perfection with a host of helpful editing tools.
- Create amazing videos with fun effects and interesting transitions.
- Record or add audio clips to your video, or simply pull stock sounds from the NCH Sound Library.
- Enhance your audio tracks with impressive audio effects, like Pan, Reverb or Echo.
- Share directly online to Facebook, YouTube, and other platforms or burn directly to disc.
For a credit-based plan, first estimate credits per attempt for the precise model and settings. Then multiply by the number of attempts you expect to need and include any extra operations. Divide the plan’s usable credit allowance by that estimate to see how many attempts fit. Finally, base the cost on the number of clips you actually accept—not the number the allowance could theoretically generate if every first render worked.
For example, Runway Gen-4.5’s published rate means a five-second attempt uses 60 credits before other workflow costs. If your test shows that a brief usually takes several attempts to meet your quality bar, include those attempts in your monthly estimate rather than budgeting for a single perfect render.
How many credits does an AI video generator use?
Credit use varies by provider, model, duration, and operation. Within Runway’s published examples, Gen-4.5 video generation costs 12 credits per second, while the Standard-plan image example uses 620 credits for 31 Gemini 3 Pro (1K) images. These rates apply to the stated Runway examples; they are not a common unit that can be used to compare every provider or model.
Rank #4
- Check the rate for the exact model, not just the service.
- Confirm whether the rate changes with duration, resolution, audio, or other settings.
- Include costs for editing, stylization, or other operations when the provider lists them separately.
- Check whether plan credits renew, expire, or roll over, and whether purchased credits have different terms.
Is a free AI video generator enough for commercial videos?
A free allowance can help you explore a tool and test whether its workflow suits your project, but it does not by itself establish that the service is suitable for commercial use. Runway’s free plan, for example, is documented as a one-time 125-credit allowance that does not expire or refresh after use. Whether that is enough depends on the model and workflow you choose, how many iterations you need, and the volume of work.
Before using generated video in paid, client, or business work, read the provider’s current terms for commercial use, license and ownership, privacy and training use, watermarking, content restrictions, data retention, and regional availability. Those terms differ and are not established consistently across providers here, so do not assume that one provider’s rules apply to another.
How should I compare output quality and reliability?
Run a small, controlled trial before committing to a plan. Give each finalist the same creative brief, source image if relevant, requested duration, and target aspect ratio. Record the result and the resources it took to reach it.
Best Value
| What to score | What to observe |
|---|---|
| Prompt adherence | Are the requested subject, setting, action, and mood present? |
| Motion continuity | Does movement remain coherent through the clip, or do objects or actions jump unexpectedly? |
| Visual consistency | Do people, products, and key details remain stable from moment to moment? |
| Audio | If sound or dialogue matters, is it included and usable for the intended edit? |
| Editability | Can you make the changes your project requires, and export in the needed format? |
| Iteration burden | How many rerolls and how much editing did it take to reach an acceptable result? |
AI video generation can require multiple attempts. Runway’s Standard-plan help guidance says: “Just like any tool in the creative process, AI video generation can take multiple attempts before achieving the best result.” Build that iteration into both the budget and the schedule.
Score outputs against the deliverable you actually need. A visually striking generation may still be a poor fit if it misses the brief, cannot be edited into the project, or consumes too much of your allowance to produce a usable clip.
