Start by identifying whether the fault appears with wired Android Auto, wireless Android Auto, direct Bluetooth playback, or every connection. Then troubleshoot that path: a short data-capable USB cable for wired use, Bluetooth/Wi‑Fi pairing and media-audio settings for wireless use, and the car’s infotainment firmware when the receiver is involved. A replacement cable can help a wired connection, but it cannot fix wireless-only stuttering.
Use the tests below in order. They separate an audio-routing problem from a USB link, wireless pairing, phone software, or vehicle receiver issue without buying parts prematurely.

First, map exactly when the audio fails
“Android Auto audio problem” describes several different symptoms. Before changing settings, reproduce the fault and record what happens. These observations narrow the next step, but they do not prove a single cause by themselves.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| What you observe | What it helps you isolate | Best next check |
|---|---|---|
| Audio cuts out only on a USB connection | The phone-to-car data path, cable, or USB port | Use a known-good short data cable and inspect the ports |
| Audio stutters only with wireless Android Auto | Wireless pairing, phone software, or the head unit | Verify Bluetooth, Wi‑Fi, and Location Services, then compare with wired Android Auto if available |
| Audio and the Android Auto display disconnect together | The underlying Android Auto connection rather than only an audio route | Check connection setup, cable or pairing, and receiver restart |
| Only one music or podcast app is affected | The app or its stream, rather than every Android Auto audio route | Test another media app before changing vehicle settings |
| Every Android Auto app is affected, but direct Bluetooth works | The Android Auto session or receiver integration | Restart the infotainment system and check the applicable connection path |
| Direct Bluetooth music also cuts out or sounds distorted | Bluetooth media routing, volume, another paired device, or vehicle support | Check Media audio, both volume controls, and competing paired devices |
Write down whether the problem occurs while parked and while driving, although the key comparison is the connection mode. If the vehicle supports both modes, changing only the mode is a useful diagnostic experiment: keep the same phone, app, and track, then test USB and wireless separately.

Fix wired Android Auto over USB
1. Replace the cable with a short, data-capable one
Google’s Android Auto troubleshooting guidance recommends a high-quality USB cable shorter than 1 metre (3 feet), with no hub or extension in the path. The cable must carry data, not merely charge. If Android Auto worked previously and then stopped, Google says replacing the cable will likely fix the issue.
Google states: “If Android Auto had worked properly before and no longer works now, replace your USB cable and that will likely fix the issue.” Treat this as a practical first test, not a guarantee. Match the connector on the phone to the connector in the vehicle; many current phones use USB-C, while some cars provide a different port or require an adapter. Avoid testing through a hub, extension lead, or loosely fitting adapter.
Try the replacement before purchasing other accessories. If the new cable restores stable audio and the display, the original cable or its connectors were implicated. If charging works but Android Auto still will not start, continue with the data-transfer checks below.
2. Check both USB ports for obstruction or a loose fit
Inspect the phone’s USB port, the vehicle’s Android Auto port, and both cable ends for lint or other debris. The Android Auto Help Community’s connection FAQ suggests checking for debris and trying a shorter tested cable; that community material is marked as potentially unverified or out of date, so use it as a basic inspection suggestion rather than an official diagnosis. Do not force anything into a port or damage its contacts.
Try the vehicle’s designated Android Auto USB port if it has more than one. A port that supplies power may not support the data connection required for Android Auto. A cable that fits physically can still be charge-only or unable to maintain a stable data link.

3. Confirm that the phone permits USB data transfer
If the phone charges but the car does not launch Android Auto, look at the USB notification on the phone after connecting. The community FAQ describes selecting MTP or Media Transfer so the connection allows data rather than charging only. The exact wording varies by Android version and manufacturer. Select the data-transfer option, unlock the phone if prompted, and accept any Android Auto permission request.
Disconnect and reconnect after changing the USB mode. Keep the phone awake during the first retest so a lock-screen permission prompt cannot be missed. If the phone repeatedly returns to charge-only mode, test the same phone and cable with another known data connection; that helps distinguish a phone setting from the car’s port.

4. Interpret the wired retest
- Stable audio and navigation after the cable swap: keep the short data cable and retire the unreliable one.
- Audio still cuts out and the display also disconnects: the USB data path or vehicle receiver remains suspect; restart the infotainment system and follow the receiver checks later in this guide.
- The display stays connected but only one app sounds distorted: compare another media app before changing the cable again.
- Nothing connects despite charging: recheck USB data mode, the designated vehicle port, and vehicle-specific compatibility information.
Fix wireless Android Auto stuttering
1. Verify wireless compatibility and the required radios
Wireless Android Auto is not available on every phone-and-vehicle combination. Confirm that both the phone and the vehicle or head unit support wireless Android Auto and that pairing follows the vehicle maker’s procedure. Google’s setup guidance recommends keeping Bluetooth, Wi‑Fi, and Location Services enabled during wireless setup. Turning one of them off can prevent the initial pairing or make the session unstable.
Pair the phone from the vehicle’s Android Auto or phone-connection menu rather than assuming that a generic Bluetooth pairing is sufficient. Complete any on-screen prompts on the phone and the receiver. If the car is unfamiliar with the phone, remove an obsolete pairing only when the vehicle maker’s instructions call for it, then perform the setup again exactly as specified for that model.
2. Compare wireless with wired, when the car supports both
Use the same phone, media app, and audio track for a short wired test. If wired playback is clean but wireless audio stutters, the comparison narrows the problem to the wireless session, its software, or the head unit; it does not identify which of those is responsible. If both modes fail in the same way, focus on the receiver, phone audio routing, and the particular app rather than buying another cable.

3. Update Android Auto, with the date and scope in mind
In an Android Auto Help Community response dated 2024-12-05, Android Auto team specialist Anubhav said a fix had been implemented for a reported wireless-audio-stuttering issue and advised updating Android Auto to version 13.2 or above. The response said the update “should solve the problem.” Later replies in that same thread describe users who continued to experience stuttering, so this is a dated response to a reported issue, not a universal present-day cure for every phone and vehicle.
Install the latest Android Auto version offered for the phone, then restart the phone and perform a fresh wireless test. Record the installed version when reporting the problem; version 13.2 is not a guarantee that a different current setup will behave identically.
Check Bluetooth audio routing and volume
Android Auto’s wireless connection uses Bluetooth and Wi‑Fi, while a vehicle may also retain separate Bluetooth media connections. Google’s Android Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance recommends turning Bluetooth off and on, confirming that the devices are paired, and restarting the devices. These are reversible checks and should precede deleting every pairing or changing vehicle settings.
Check the two volume controls
Raise the phone’s media volume and the car’s media volume separately while audio is actively playing. Some vehicles remember a different level for Bluetooth, Android Auto, navigation prompts, and radio. A low or muted source can sound like an intermittent connection even when the link is stable.
Make sure Media audio is enabled for the car
Open the phone’s Bluetooth settings, select the connected vehicle, and verify that Media audio is enabled. Android menu labels differ by manufacturer, but the setting is normally on the details screen for the paired car. If Media audio is disabled, calls or Android Auto prompts may behave differently from music playback.

Check for another paired device taking the stream
Look at the vehicle’s paired-device list and the phone’s active Bluetooth connections. Another phone, tablet, or accessory may be selected as the media source. Disconnect competing devices temporarily and retest with only the intended phone connected.
Confirm that the car supports Bluetooth music
Google cautions that not all cars support music playback over Bluetooth. The vehicle manual and the vehicle maker’s support information are authoritative for that model. If direct Bluetooth music is unsupported, use the connection method the vehicle specifies instead of treating the limitation as an Android Auto audio defect.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Restart and update the infotainment receiver
Restart the car’s infotainment system after checking the phone and connection. Use the receiver’s normal restart or power-cycle procedure; do not interrupt power or remove wiring unless the vehicle maker explicitly instructs you to do so. A restart can clear a stuck audio route or an incomplete Android Auto session.
For an aftermarket receiver, Google recommends checking the receiver maker’s website for firmware updates. Firmware files and installation steps are specific to the receiver model, hardware revision, region, and current firmware. Do not apply an update intended for a similar-looking unit, and do not substitute generic instructions for the maker’s procedure. For a factory system, use the vehicle manufacturer’s support channel and the instructions for the exact make, model, year, and head-unit version.

Run the least expensive and most reversible checks first. The table shows what each action can and cannot establish.
| Action | Connection path | Cost and reversibility | What a result tells you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Check phone/car volume, Media audio, and competing devices | Wireless or direct Bluetooth | Free; fully reversible | Whether audio is routed or muted before Android Auto is blamed |
| Toggle Bluetooth, restart phone, and confirm pairing | Wireless or direct Bluetooth | Free; reversible | Whether the session recovers after a clean radio restart |
| Swap to a short, high-quality data cable | Wired USB | Requires a compatible cable; reversible | Whether the original cable or data path is unreliable |
| Inspect ports and select USB data transfer | Wired USB | Free; reversible | Whether charging-only mode or an obstructed connector prevents data |
| Restart the infotainment system | Both, depending on receiver | Free; reversible | Whether the receiver had a temporary audio or session fault |
| Install receiver firmware supplied for the exact unit | Vehicle or aftermarket head unit | Model-specific service; follow maker instructions | Whether a documented receiver update addresses compatibility or stability |
| Contact the vehicle maker with complete version details | Any unresolved path | May require service; not a blind purchase | Whether the vehicle has a compatibility, firmware, or hardware issue |
When audio alone fails versus the whole Android Auto session
Audio cuts out but the map and display remain connected
Start with volume, Media audio, the selected source, and the individual media app. Test another app with the same connection. For wireless use, verify the Bluetooth and Wi‑Fi setup; for wired use, still check the cable if the symptom changes when the connector is moved or the session briefly reconnects.
Audio, navigation, and the display disconnect together
Treat this as a connection problem first. On USB, repeat the data-cable, port, and USB-transfer checks. Wirelessly, verify compatibility and the required radios, then compare with a wired session if possible. Restart the receiver before escalating.
Only direct Bluetooth playback is distorted
Check Bluetooth pairing, Media audio, both volume levels, and whether another paired device is selected. Confirm that the vehicle supports Bluetooth music. A clean Android Auto session alongside faulty direct Bluetooth points toward the vehicle’s Bluetooth media path rather than the Android Auto app itself.
Prepare a useful escalation report
If the fault remains after the mode-specific checks, collect the details a support technician needs instead of reporting only “audio is bad.” Include:
- Phone make and model.
- Android version.
- Android Auto version.
- Google Play services version.
- Vehicle make, model, and year.
- Factory head-unit or aftermarket receiver model and firmware version.
- Country or region.
- Media app involved, and whether every media app behaves the same way.
- Whether the symptom occurs over wired Android Auto, wireless Android Auto, direct Bluetooth, or all three.
- Whether the display and navigation disconnect along with the audio.
- What changed immediately before the problem began, such as a phone, cable, pairing, or firmware change.
The Android Auto team has requested vehicle or head-unit details, phone and Android versions, Android Auto and Google Play services versions, and country when investigating reports. Providing those fields, plus a precise reproduction pattern, avoids a long exchange of basic questions.
Google directs users to the vehicle manufacturer for compatibility or connection issues. Contact that support channel when the vehicle does not support the required mode, the receiver repeatedly drops both audio and display, or the maker documents a firmware or service procedure for the unit. Include the results of your wired, wireless, and direct-Bluetooth comparisons so the issue can be routed to the right team.
