Start by restarting your Chromebook, checking your internet connection, and clearing the problem app’s cache and data. Then update ChromeOS and check available storage. If only one app still fails, the issue may be that the app does not support your Chromebook or requires hardware it lacks; repeated resets will not fix that compatibility limit.
Why do Android apps crash or run poorly on a Chromebook?
The cause may be limited to one app, or it may affect the Chromebook more broadly. Compare the problem app with other Android apps, and—if possible—with the same app on another device. Also note whether the app fails only when it needs an internet connection, whether storage is nearly full, and whether ChromeOS has updates waiting.

- One app fails, others work: focus on that app’s data, update status, and Chromebook compatibility.
- Several apps or websites struggle: check the connection, available storage, ChromeOS updates, and overall system performance.
- The app works on a phone but not this Chromebook: its Chromebook support or hardware requirements may differ. Chromebook input can also behave differently; for example, a mouse may substitute for touchscreen input in some cases.
Try these low-risk fixes first
- Restart the Chromebook. Save your work, then restart the device and reopen the app. Google lists a full restart as the first step for Android apps that will not open, crash, or have other serious problems.
- Check the connection. Open another network-dependent app or webpage. If several services have trouble, reconnect to Wi-Fi or test another network before treating the app itself as the cause.
- Clear the affected app’s cache and data. Open the app’s settings in ChromeOS and use the available controls to clear its cache and data. The exact settings path can vary by ChromeOS version, so follow the equivalent current app-settings path if labels differ. Clearing data can remove locally stored app state or sign you out; check that important data is backed up or synced before proceeding.
- Update ChromeOS. Go to Settings > About ChromeOS and select Check for updates. If an update installs, restart to finish it. Google says Android apps require an up-to-date ChromeOS version for setup, and recommends available updates as part of addressing a slow Chromebook.
- Check storage. Open Settings > System preferences > Storage management. Review Android storage, Downloads, and other categories. Low disk space can cause problems using Android apps. Remove files or unused apps only if they can safely be replaced; do not delete app data without considering its backup or sync status.
How to tell whether the app is incompatible
Google notes that not all Android apps work on Chromebooks. An app developer can prevent an app from running on Chromebooks, or a Chromebook may lack a required capability; Google gives GPS as one example. If Google Play says the device is incompatible or the Chromebook appears grayed out as an install target, restarting, clearing data, and updating may not change the result. Check the app developer’s support information for Chromebook availability and requirements.

What to do if the whole Chromebook is slow or unstable
Use system-level checks when several apps, browser windows, or the Chromebook itself are affected—not just one Android app.
- Close apps and browser windows you are not using.
- If the Chromebook itself crashes or freezes, consider whether a recently added app or extension coincided with the problem; uninstall it if appropriate.
- Use the Chromebook Diagnostics app to investigate CPU or memory symptoms.
- Keep reset or recovery as later steps. Recovery erases local files, so back up anything important before using it.

When to contact support
If one app remains broken after the app-specific steps, contact its developer and describe the Chromebook model, ChromeOS version, and what happens when you open the app. If it appears unsupported, ask the developer whether Chromebook support is available. On a school or work Chromebook, an administrator may restrict Play Store access or updates; contact that administrator before trying to change managed settings. Google’s Play Store setup and app-use guidance explains the Chromebook setup context.
