Start by verifying Google Play support on the exact Chromebook model, then check whether each Android app you need works on it. A Chromebook’s RAM, storage, touchscreen, or Chromebook Plus label cannot guarantee that a particular app will run.
Check whether the Chromebook supports Google Play
Google Play is available on only some Chromebooks. If you can access the device, open ChromeOS Settings and look for “Manage Google Play preferences.” Google says that if this option is missing, the Chromebook does not work with Android apps. See Google’s instructions for using Android apps on a Chromebook.

Check every essential app on its own
Google Play support means the Chromebook can run Android apps; it does not mean every app will be available or work properly. An app may not support a particular device or may require hardware the Chromebook lacks. Google gives GPS as one example. Compatibility can also depend on screen size, Android version, and location. Check the app’s Play Store listing and requirements, and ask its developer when those details do not resolve the question. Google’s guidance on finding and downloading apps explains why an app may not be available for a device.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Make a short list of apps you rely on—such as school, work, creative, or entertainment apps—and verify each one before comparing models. Google’s Chromebook app recommendations include examples from different categories, but a recommendation is not a guarantee that a particular Android version is available or suitable on your Chromebook. Where a web version meets your needs, it may be an alternative; check its features separately.
Match memory and storage to the apps
Google’s education deployment guidance generally recommends at least 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage for devices running Android apps in schools. That is a general baseline for managed education deployments—not a measured performance threshold or a guarantee for every consumer app or workload. Google advises checking app requirements and testing apps on the target devices. Read its Android app deployment guidance for schools.

Use the named apps’ requirements and your own storage needs to decide whether you need more. Consider how many apps and files you will keep locally, especially if you expect to work offline. Don’t treat a hardware figure alone as proof that an app will run well.

Some apps work best with a touchscreen, stylus, auto-rotate, or a particular resolution. These features matter only if the apps you plan to use benefit from them. Google’s education guidance recommends testing apps on target devices, and its deployment guidance covers device suitability and app requirements.

If you are considering a convertible or a stylus, test the actual app and the way you expect to use it before paying extra for that design or an accessory. A touchscreen or 2-in-1 hinge does not establish app compatibility.
Understand what Chromebook Plus does—and does not—tell you
Chromebook Plus is a hardware eligibility tier, not a promise that every Android app will work. Google’s eligibility specifications include 8 GB or more of RAM, 128 GB or more of storage, a specified class of CPU, a 1080p-or-better webcam with Temporal Noise Reduction, and a Full HD IPS-or-better display. The criteria are listed in Google’s Chromebook Plus requirements. Confirm the exact model and check each app separately.

Check update support and managed-device rules
Older Chromebook update choices
Some eligible Chromebooks released before 2021 can opt into extended updates for ten years of automatic updates from the platform’s release. Google says devices that receive extended updates lose the ability to run Android apps and no longer have the Google Play Store. Check the specific model’s support details and understand this trade-off before opting in. See Google’s extended updates information.

An administrator can restrict access to Google Play or app downloads, even if the Chromebook itself supports Android apps. If you are buying for school or work use, ask the organization whether its policy permits Google Play and the apps you need. Google explains administrator controls in its Android apps on Chromebook guidance.

A practical buying checklist
- List essential apps. Focus on apps you need, not just ones you might try.
- Verify app availability and requirements. Check each listing for device or feature limits, and contact the developer if compatibility remains unclear.
- Confirm Play Store support for the exact Chromebook. Check Google’s support information and, where possible, look for “Manage Google Play preferences” in ChromeOS Settings.
- Compare hardware against app needs. Check RAM, storage, screen resolution, touchscreen, stylus support, and auto-rotate only where they matter to your apps.
- Check the update policy. For an older model, confirm its support status and the consequences of any extended-update opt-in.
- Ask about management restrictions. For a school- or employer-managed device, confirm that the administrator allows Google Play and app downloads.
- Test before a major commitment. Try the apps on the target model before buying an expensive setup or deploying a fleet. Google recommends small-scale testing for managed education deployments.
“I can’t download apps from the Play Store on my Chromebook”
First, check whether the device has “Manage Google Play preferences” in ChromeOS Settings. If the option is absent, Google says the Chromebook does not work with Android apps. If the option is present but an app is missing or unavailable, check its device compatibility and requirements; a school or employer administrator may also have blocked app access. Google’s Chromebook Android-app support page covers Play Store setup and availability.
