Reconnect the Ethernet cable firmly at both ends, check that it is plugged into the right ports, and inspect the plugs and sockets for damage or obstruction. If the message remains, test with a known-working cable and an appropriate alternate port. These checks help distinguish a cable or device-link problem from a separate router, modem, or internet-service issue.
Reconnect the cable and check the ports
- Reseat both ends. Unplug the Ethernet cable from the computer and the router, switch, or modem, then plug each end back in until it is firmly seated. If you use a USB-to-Ethernet adapter, check that connection too. ASUS notes that a loose plug, an obstructed socket, or a broken connector latch can prevent a wired connection. - Use the correct ports. A computer connected to a home router normally goes into one of the router’s LAN Ethernet ports. The WAN or Internet port is usually for the connection between the modem and router. Check the labels on your equipment: arrangements and labels can vary by model. If the warning says “WAN Port Unplugged,” check the modem-to-router connection rather than moving that cable to an arbitrary LAN port. - Inspect the cable and socket. Look for a damaged cable, bent or broken plug, or debris blocking the port. Ethernet plugs use an RJ45 connector; do not mistake a smaller RJ11 phone connector for one. If the latch is broken or the cable is visibly damaged, test with another cable before deciding it needs replacement. TP-Link recommends Cat5e or higher for a replacement cable.
Test with another cable or port
Use a known-working Ethernet cable between the same two devices. If the link returns, the original cable or one of its connectors is likely at fault. If it does not, keep that known-working cable connected and, where the equipment permits, try a different suitable port. Change one thing at a time: first the cable, then the port. Note whether the computer detects Ethernet after each change. This makes it easier to identify whether the problem follows the cable or stays with a particular port or device. Avoid moving a modem uplink to another port unless the equipment maker’s instructions call for that test.
Tell a cable-link problem from an internet outage
“Unplugged” usually means the computer is not detecting a physical Ethernet link. If the Ethernet connection is detected but websites or other internet services still do not work, the cable may be connected correctly and the fault may be farther upstream—in the router, modem, or ISP connection.

Where your setup and ISP instructions allow it, connecting a computer directly to the modem can help isolate the issue. If service still does not work in that configuration, contact your ISP or equipment maker for the next diagnostic step. Check Windows and restart equipment if needed
After checking the physical connection, use Windows 11’s Get Help network troubleshooter if the Ethernet status remains unplugged. Microsoft also recommends testing another cable. Microsoft Support: Fix Ethernet connection problems in Windows.

If your equipment’s instructions recommend it, restart the modem and router after the cable checks. This temporarily disconnects everyone using the network. Wait for the equipment’s status lights to settle before checking the connection again; light patterns and meanings differ by model.

When the message persists
- If a known-working cable restores the link, replace the faulty or unreliable cable. A Cat5e-or-higher RJ45 Ethernet cable is TP-Link’s recommendation; buying one is unnecessary if reseating your current cable fixes the connection.
- If the same computer fails with a known-working cable on more than one suitable port, check the computer’s Ethernet adapter and consult the computer or adapter manufacturer.
- If multiple devices fail on the router’s Ethernet ports, consult the router maker. If the link is established but internet service is unavailable, contact your ISP or modem provider based on the isolation results.
A factory reset is not an early fix for an unplugged-cable message: it can erase custom network settings without resolving a damaged cable, connector, or port.
