Open the VLC Video source’s properties in OBS, check that the intended videos are listed, and turn on Loop Playlist. Keep the source visible while testing, and confirm VLC is installed with the same architecture as OBS—64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. If it still stops, identify whether it fails to advance to the next video or finishes the whole playlist without restarting; those symptoms point to different causes.
Check that you are using the playlist-capable source
OBS has two source types that are easy to confuse. Media Source is for a single file and has its own Loop control. For a list of videos, use VLC Video and its separate Loop Playlist setting. OBS documents that option as restarting the source after it runs out of media files, and says it is enabled by default. OBS VLC Video documentation.

Open the VLC Video source’s properties and inspect the entries there. Don’t assume a playlist opened in VLC’s desktop app automatically populates the OBS source with the videos you expect.

- Verify the playlist entries. In the VLC Video source properties, make sure the intended video files appear in the list and are playable. If the source contains only one file, or the wrong entries, correct the list before testing looping.
- Enable Loop Playlist. In those same properties, turn on Loop Playlist. Leave Shuffle off during diagnosis so you can tell whether OBS advances in the expected order and returns to the start.
- Keep the source visible for a controlled test. OBS documents the default visibility behavior as stopping playback when a source is not visible and restarting it when it becomes visible. Keep the source visible while testing, or adjust its visibility behavior to fit how your scenes are arranged. A scene switch or hidden source can look like a playback failure. - Check that VLC is installed and matches OBS. VLC Video uses VLC libraries and will not appear as an OBS source unless VLC is installed. OBS specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC; check the architecture of both applications.
Tell apart a failure to advance from a failure to repeat
Watch one full test run and note exactly where playback stops. If the current video reaches its end but the next listed video never starts, the issue is progression between items. If every item plays but the source stops after the final one instead of starting again, check Loop Playlist. If playback stops after the source is hidden or a scene changes, investigate visibility behavior first.

This distinction matters because reports of “only plays one file,” “stops on the last frame,” and “does not proceed to play the next video” describe different symptoms; they do not establish one cause for every setup.
Collect useful details if the settings look right
If the source still misbehaves, record the details needed to separate a configuration problem from a version-specific one:

- OBS and VLC versions, plus your operating system.
- The VLC Video source’s listed item count and the paths of those items.
- Whether the source uses individual media entries or playlist files such as .xspf.
- Whether playback fails before the next item or only after the full list ends.
- An OBS log from a session that reproduces the problem.
Historical reports are narrow examples, not universal fixes. A 2018 OBS forum thread described a playlist stopping after one file with OBS 21.0.1 64-bit and VLC 3.0.0 64-bit; one participant said VLC 2.2.4 resolved that case. That is an old, setup-specific anecdote—not a reason to downgrade without first checking currently supported versions and reproducing the fault. OBS forum report.

When to consider another playlist source
If the built-in VLC Video source does not fit a workflow that needs changing folders or other playlist management, you can evaluate the Media Playlist Source. Its update history lists fixes for playlist progression, including when the same video path appears again; it also describes the latter as affecting looping a single file. Those specific fixes do not guarantee it will resolve every VLC-source problem.
The update history says version 0.1.0 and later requires OBS 31. Before installing, check the current release notes and platform instructions, and confirm your OBS version meets the requirement. Choose based on version compatibility, whether you need a fixed list or changing folders, how the source should behave when hidden, and whether your symptom matches the progression issue described in the plugin’s history. There is no controlled head-to-head comparison establishing that one source is more reliable in every setup.
