How the setup works
YouTube Live receives the encoder’s outgoing program, so OBS controls what viewers see: the talk, the sponsor interstitial, and the next session. Build those elements as scenes, then switch between them during the event. For a schedule that needs precise pauses between talks, separate session scenes give the operator direct control.

Build the session and sponsor scenes in OBS
Create a scene for each prerecorded session

In OBS, create a scene for the first talk. Add the local video file as a Media Source and select the recording. OBS Media Source supports common video formats; its playback options include looping and restarting when the source becomes active. For a one-time talk, check the source’s end-of-file behavior in rehearsal rather than assuming it will advance automatically.

Repeat for each session recording, naming scenes clearly and arranging them in the event’s running order. Separate scenes let the operator decide exactly when a talk ends and the sponsor segment begins.

Create the sponsor interstitial
For one sponsor graphic, add an Image source to a dedicated sponsor scene. If you need several sponsor graphics to rotate, use OBS Image Slide Show. It supports automatic or manual changes, configurable slide duration and transition, looping, and playback order. Set the order and timing to match the sponsor agreement, then rehearse the full sequence.
Choose the playback approach

OBS scenes can combine media, images, and other sources. Use a cut or fade transition as appropriate, and operate from the OBS preview/program workflow so you can verify the next scene before switching it to the program.
Schedule the YouTube Live event and connect OBS

In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and schedule the event under Manage. Set the event title, privacy, and details. A scheduled stream can be promoted, and viewers can receive reminders.

Copy the event’s server URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the stream key like a password: do not share it publicly.

Start OBS streaming and wait for the encoder feed to appear in the YouTube Live Control Room preview. Check that the expected scene, video, and audio are coming through.

When the event is ready, click Go live for the scheduled stream in Live Control Room. Starting the encoder sends the feed; the scheduled event is not live to viewers until you take it live there.

Run the event: talk, sponsor slides, next talk

Begin on the opening or first-session scene and confirm the public or unlisted watch page shows the right picture and audio.

At the end of a talk, switch to the sponsor scene. Hold it for the agreed interval, or let the configured Image Slide Show run if the sponsor sequence is automatic.

Switch to the next session scene and repeat the sequence. Watch the program output and monitor YouTube stream health throughout, not just the OBS preview.

At the end of the event, end the stream in Live Control Room and stop the OBS encoder. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived.
Rehearse and check the whole chain
YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least fifteen minutes beforehand. Treat these as preparation guidance, not a guarantee that the show is ready: run a test of the actual sequence, including session playback, sponsor scene changes, audio, and what happens when a file reaches its end. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend test streams and checking the preview.

Check sponsor graphics, slideshow order, slide duration, transitions, and looping or manual control.

Listen to session audio and check the YouTube preview and watch page for picture and sound before the event.

Verify the scene order against the run of show, and assign someone to make the transitions if the presenter is not operating OBS.

Keep the stream key private and confirm the correct scheduled event is selected before going live.
Keep sponsor slides separate from YouTube’s break slate
YouTube Live Control Room’s Take a Break away slate, including its encoder browser-source overlay, is intended for a temporary break. It is not a timed sponsor sequence between prerecorded sessions.
