How to Fix an iPhone That Won’t Transfer Data or Activate After Setup

A failed iPhone transfer may be separate from activation. Find the right fix for Quick Start, backup restore, activation errors, or eSIM service.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A failed data transfer does not necessarily mean your iPhone failed to activate. If you see “Set up as New” or “Restore from Backup,” Apple says the iPhone is activated; data migration and cellular service are separate issues. Identify which one is stuck, then use the matching fix below.

First, tell whether activation or data transfer failed

Apple Support says an alert that offers “Set up as New” or “Restore from Backup” means your iPhone is activated. You can continue setup without restoring immediately, then troubleshoot the missing data separately. If you see an activation error instead, follow the activation steps below.

Fix a Quick Start transfer that will not start or finish

If the Quick Start prompt does not appear

  1. On the old iPhone, turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
  2. Place the old iPhone close to the new one, then follow the instructions that appear on screen.
  3. If the Quick Start prompt has disappeared, restart both iPhones and try again.

If direct transfer is already underway

Keep the iPhones near each other and connected to power until the transfer finishes. Apple notes that the time depends on network conditions and how much data is being moved, so there is no reliable fixed completion estimate. Direct transfer also keeps both devices occupied until it is done.

Choose a different restore route if Quick Start fails

If you have a suitable backup, you can restore from iCloud or from a computer backup. Restoring requires returning the new iPhone to its setup flow. If you already completed setup, you must erase the new iPhone before restoring. Erasing deletes data currently on that phone, so first confirm that the backup you plan to use exists and contains what you need.

Fix an activation-server or activation-information error

  1. Check Apple’s System Status page for iOS Device Activation. If the service is unavailable, wait a few minutes and retry.
  2. Restart the iPhone, connect it to reliable Wi-Fi rather than mobile data, and try activation again.
  3. If activation still fails, connect the iPhone to a computer with current macOS or iTunes and an internet connection. Use a compatible iPhone data cable; the right connector depends on the iPhone and computer ports.
  4. If the computer reports that the SIM or eSIM is incompatible or invalid, contact your carrier.

Apple says an “activation information was invalid” or “activation information could not be obtained from the device” message requires restoring the iPhone in recovery mode. Follow the recovery-mode instructions linked from Apple’s activation support page.
