If your iPhone gets hot while recording, stop filming if the heat is increasing, move it out of direct sunlight and away from hot surroundings, and let it cool. If a temperature warning appears, turn the iPhone off and leave it in a cooler place until it has cooled. Some warmth during camera use can be normal; a warning or heat-related changes to the camera, display, charging, or performance are reasons to pause.
Why an iPhone can get hot while recording video
Recording video uses the camera and can involve sustained processing. Apple lists camera use among activities that can make an iPhone feel warmer, and says prolonged camera use—particularly in hot conditions or direct sunlight—can contribute to temperature-related performance changes. Apple’s stated ambient operating range for iPhone is 0°C to 35°C (32°F to 95°F); using the device outside normal conditions can affect performance. Apple’s temperature guidance also warns that very hot conditions can permanently shorten battery life.

Apple does not give a safe recording duration by iPhone model, or identify a particular video setting as a fix for heat. A warm phone by itself does not establish that the device is faulty.

What heat-related changes can look like
When an iPhone’s temperature is outside its normal operating range, it may temporarily manage heat by changing how some features work. Apple lists these possible effects:
- Charging slows or stops.
- The display dims or goes black.
- The cellular signal becomes weaker.
- The flash or other camera features are disabled.
- Performance drops, including reduced frame rates or longer processing times.
These changes are not all proof of a fault; they can be temporary responses to temperature. Pause recording and let the device cool if they occur.

If charging pauses while you record
Apple says charging may pause when an iPhone is too hot or too cold. For a hot iPhone, move it to a cooler place; if it is in use, lock the screen or put it to sleep. Charging resumes when the device returns to a normal temperature. Apple’s Charging On Hold guidance
Should you change video settings to reduce heat?
Apple’s video recording settings guide describes options such as Auto FPS and HDR Video, but does not say that changing them reduces heat. You can try a less demanding recording setup as an informal troubleshooting experiment, but that is not an Apple-recommended thermal fix and is not guaranteed to solve the problem. Prioritize stopping, moving to a cooler environment, and letting the phone cool when it is overheating.

When to contact Apple Support
The cited Apple guidance does not define a threshold at which recurring heat becomes a defect. If your iPhone repeatedly displays temperature warnings during ordinary use in a comfortable environment, even after it has cooled, contact Apple Support or an authorized service provider for an assessment. The warning alone does not identify the cause.
