If your iPhone battery is draining faster after an iOS update, start at Settings > Battery. Check for an “Ongoing iOS Update” insight and review which apps or system activity used power. Apple says update-related tasks can continue in the background and recommends waiting a few days, then checking again. If the drain continues, use the Battery screen and Battery Health status to identify what to do next rather than assuming the update damaged the battery.
1. Check whether the update is still doing background work
- Open Settings > Battery.
- Look for an “Ongoing iOS Update” insight and review the usage details.
- If the insight appears, give the phone a few days to finish update-related tasks, then check battery usage again.
Apple says some tasks related to an update can continue after the iPhone is ready to use, temporarily affecting battery life and thermal performance. Its support guidance, published July 20, 2026, recommends waiting a few days and checking again. That guidance describes a possible temporary cause; it does not establish that every post-update battery complaint is caused by background processing.

2. Use Battery settings to find what is consuming power
In Settings > Battery, inspect daily usage and app or system activity. On supported software, compare recent days with current usage. Tap an app or activity for more detail, then distinguish time spent on screen from battery use while the app was in the background.

- Background activity: Navigation, music, photo syncing, and mail fetching can use power when you are not actively looking at the app. Reduce use or adjust the relevant app’s activity if it is a persistent contributor.
- Notifications: Frequent alerts can wake the iPhone. Review notifications for apps that appear alongside unexplained usage.
- System activity: Look for update-related activity or other system use rather than attributing all drain to one app.

3. Check cellular signal and connectivity
Weak cellular coverage can increase battery use. When practical, connect to Wi-Fi and use the iPhone where cellular reception is stronger. If you have a supported 5G iPhone, Apple says 5G Auto can switch to LTE when 5G does not provide a noticeably better experience. The exact available options depend on the model and software.
4. Use power modes as a short-term measure
Low Power Mode
When you need to stretch the current charge, open Settings > Battery > Power Mode and enable Low Power Mode if that option is shown. It can reduce or disable features such as Mail fetch, Hey Siri, Background App Refresh, and some visual effects. This limits some activity; it does not identify or repair the cause of persistent drain.

Adaptive Power
Adaptive Power is available on certain newer iPhone models running iOS 26 or later. Where supported, find it under Settings > Battery > Power Mode. Apple describes automatic adjustments that can include limiting background activity and slightly lowering brightness. Availability and default settings vary, so check the Power Mode screen on your iPhone rather than expecting to find it on every model.

Open Settings > Battery, then select Battery Health on iPhone 15 and later, or Battery Health & Charging on iPhone 14 and earlier. If the screen displays “Service,” follow its guidance or contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. A service indication is a reason to investigate the battery; it is not a reason to choose a model-specific replacement without diagnosis.

Heat is a separate battery-health concern, not proof that an iOS update caused a defect. Apple gives an ideal ambient temperature range of 62° to 72°F (16° to 22°C) and advises avoiding use or charging above 95°F (35°C), which can permanently reduce battery lifespan. Apple’s current guidance does not show that every post-update battery complaint is a software defect, and the available settings differ by iPhone model and iOS version. Use the patterns on your own Battery screen to choose the next step.
