An RBI repo-rate hike can push market yields and borrowing costs higher, put pressure on the market value of existing fixed-coupon bonds, and eventually lead some banks to raise deposit rates. None of those changes is automatic or one-for-one: timing and size vary, and a rate decision alone cannot predict whether stocks will rise or fall.
How an RBI rate hike reaches markets and households
The policy repo rate is a key signal for funding costs, not a switch that instantly resets every loan, deposit or asset price. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) describes transmission through money-market rates, bond yields, bank deposit and lending rates, and asset prices. Households, businesses and government then adjust spending and investment. The RBI notes that the process takes months and can take more than a year. RBI, Monetary Policy Transmission

The RBI identifies four channels—interest rates, credit, exchange rates and asset prices—and says studies it reviewed found the interest-rate channel strongest in India. Its cited empirical lags are two to three quarters for output and three to four quarters for inflation, with effects persisting eight to twelve quarters. Those are estimates for broad economic outcomes, not a timetable for a particular share, bond or bank offer. RBI, Monetary Policy Transmission RBI, monetary policy framework discussion
What happens to bonds when rates rise?
When market yields rise, the price of an existing fixed-coupon bond generally falls. Its fixed payments have to compete with the higher yield available on newly issued or traded bonds, so its market price adjusts. The size of the price change depends partly on duration: longer-duration bonds are usually more sensitive to a given yield movement.

A repo-rate increase does not mean every bond yield rises by exactly the same amount. Bond yields also respond to inflation expectations, economic activity, and the supply and demand for securities. RBI, monetary policy framework discussion
India-specific evidence points to differences by maturity. A study by Barry Eichengreen and Poonam Gupta, using monthly data through May 2024, found stronger repo-rate transmission to Treasury bills and short-tenure government bonds than to longer-tenure government-bond yields. The study characterized transmission to longer-tenure yields as weaker. This is historical empirical evidence, not a prediction of how a particular bond will move after the next decision. What to check before judging a bond’s rate risk
- Maturity and duration: These indicate how exposed the bond’s price may be to yield changes.
- Coupon and yield: The coupon is the bond’s stated payment; yield reflects its return at the market price. Compare the bond’s yield with current alternatives, not just its coupon.
- Issuer credit quality: Interest-rate risk is distinct from the risk that the issuer may not make promised payments.
- Holding period: A price decline becomes a realized loss if you sell at a lower price. Holding to maturity avoids selling at that interim price, but does not remove credit risk or guarantee a particular market value before maturity.
What happens to bank deposit rates?
A hike can raise banks’ marginal funding costs and give them a reason to compete more actively for deposits. But each bank’s response depends on its liquidity, funding needs, credit demand, deposit tenure and competition. A new term deposit may receive a newly offered rate; an existing fixed-rate deposit generally keeps its contractual rate until maturity or renewal.

The RBI’s H1 2023–24 bulletin illustrates how pass-through can vary. From May 2022 to February 2023, the cumulative repo-rate increase was 250 basis points. By August/September 2023, fresh term-deposit rates had risen 168 basis points; the bulletin said savings-deposit rates had remained almost unchanged during that cycle. The reported changes varied across bank groups and tenures, so they should not be treated as a rule for every bank or future cycle. RBI Bulletin, H1 2023–24
For a specific deposit, compare the bank’s current offered rate and tenure, renewal terms, and conditions for premature withdrawal. RBI’s published rates are context, not a substitute for a bank’s contract.
Why stock prices may rise or fall after a hike
Higher rates can weigh on stock valuations because investors may discount future cash flows more heavily. They can also increase companies’ borrowing costs and, if tighter financial conditions reduce demand, put pressure on revenue and earnings. These are potential channels, not a guaranteed market response; the RBI includes stock prices within the asset-price channel. RBI, Monetary Policy Transmission

A hike may already be anticipated by investors, limiting the reaction when it is announced. The reason for the move also matters: inflation concerns, economic growth, earnings prospects and the rate path investors expect can shape market interpretation. RBI material discusses asset-price transmission, while its account of bond-market movements identifies broader influences such as inflation expectations and economic activity. The evidence does not support a universal rule that Indian stocks fall whenever the RBI raises rates. RBI, monetary policy framework discussion

- Debt burden: Consider how much the business borrows and whether financing costs could affect earnings.
- Demand sensitivity: Assess whether higher borrowing costs could make customers defer purchases or investment.
- Currency exposure: A rate decision can interact with exchange rates, which may matter to businesses with foreign-currency costs or revenues.
- Earnings durability and expectations: A company’s outlook and what investors already expect can matter more than the headline rate change.
